A Message fromthe Chairman of the Board of TrusteesMichael D. O’HalleranThe 2009-2010 school year was an outstanding time to be a part of the important work of Providence St. MelSchool. We are thrilled by the academic achievements and the national recognition received by both our staffand our students. For a remarkable 31st year in a row, 100% of our graduates were accepted into four-year colleges and universities. This is an impressive statistic for any school, let alone when you take into account the fact that our students comefrom some of the most challenging backgrounds in the nation. Our students are confronted with a world of poverty, violence, drugs, and gangs on a regular basis. Due to these factors, our students often enter the doors of our schoollacking discipline, pride, or a solid academic background.Undeterred by these formidable obstacles, we instill within each student a foundation that directly correlates theirsuccess in life to the work they put into it. Further, we provide tools, including free evening and weekend tutoring, toensure our students’ academic success. Not only do we pride ourselves on the work we do with our students, but we pride ourselves on forming andcultivating long-term relationships with people committed to the growth and prosperity of Providence St. Mel. Weare extremely grateful to those who support our operating and capital budgets. Funds raised through our events andappeals help us educate our youth and forever change their lives. As a private independent school, we do not receive financial support from any government sources. Therefore, we are extremely cognizant of the importance of every donation, whether it is $1 or $1 million. Beassured that the Board of Trustees and I are respectful stewards of each dollar that is donated in support of ourmission. We thoughtfully and conservatively manage the resources of Providence St. Mel to ensure that this greatinstitution will thrive on Chicago’s West Side long into the future.Throughout these pages, you will be inspired by the events and individuals who have built Providence St. Mel intoone of Chicago’s finest schools. Thank you.Sincerely,Michael D. O’Halleran5

Your effect can be profound! With your most generous gift today, you can havea positive and powerful effect: you can help shapeyoung lives and give children the hope that comes withan exceptional college-preparatory education —a Providence St. Mel education. But for this story to go on — for the Providence effectto continue — we need your support of our students, our school, and our mission of academic excellence.Although our tuition remains among the lowest of allindependent schools in Chicago, it is still much more thanwhat hundreds of our struggling families can afford. Thetrue cost to educate a student at Providence St. Mel ismore than double our modest tuition. Even though ourschool automatically underwrites more than half of thistrue cost, the great majority of our students require yetadditional financial aid.Only through the assistance of such caring partnersas you can Providence St. Mel continue to keeptuition low, provide necessary scholarships, meet operatingexpenses, and offer vital academic and enrichmentprograms.TeachGuideInspireYou can produce your own effect for the promisingyoung lives we teach, guide, and inspire. We ask youto join our other supporters and friends and urgeyou to be as generous as you can. Please use theenclosed self-addressed envelope to give today toProvidence St. Mel!For more information on how you can help advance theProvidence effect, please call our Development Office at773.722.7756 or visit our website at www.psmnow.com.All of us at Providence St. Mel thank you for yourmuch-needed support.
