TRS—Important Information:Private School TRS Buy-In: Teachers who worked in a Private School can buy in 2 years or TRSservice. Teachers must apply for the “Private School Service Certification” by August 1 to beeligible. The verification simply allows teachers the opportunity to receive these credits.Teachers do not have to pay in at the time <strong>of</strong> applying. The verification locks in the ability to beable to buy in until the day <strong>of</strong> retirement. Teachers who verify have the three following optionsavailable: could choose to never buy in, could buy in a fraction <strong>of</strong> what eligible for, or could buyin all 2 years <strong>of</strong> service.Teachers interested in the buy-in need to contact TRS at 800-877-7896 and request the “PrivateSchool Service Certification” form. Your application must be received at TRS prior to August 1,2012. TRS will mail the form directly to the teacher. After teacher information is added, theform must be forwarded to the Private School the teacher worked at. The Private School willcomplete information and return to TRS.The opportunity to buy-in Private School years <strong>of</strong> experience will expire after August 1, 2012. Ifyou worked in a Private School, it is recommended to apply and keep your eligibility for a futurebuy-in.Teachers must be in the TRS system to apply.Lapsed Certificates:As <strong>of</strong> May 8, 2012, Public Act 97-0682 (formerly Senate Bill 3393) went into providing threeoptions to reinstate a lapsed certificate. Certificates must be reinstated by September 1, 2012.Individuals with lapsed certificates may reinstate by completing 9 hours <strong>of</strong> 100 level or abovecollege coursework in the content area <strong>of</strong> certification, complete form 73-93A, submit an <strong>of</strong>ficialtranscript, and pay all back fees with a cashier’s check.Individuals with a lapsed certificate may pay a $500 penalty in place <strong>of</strong> the 9 hours <strong>of</strong>coursework. Applicants must submit form 73-93B, a cashier’s check for $500 payable to theState Superintendent <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>, login to ECS after 7 business days from submitting the check,and register certificates through the ECS system paying all previous and current registration fees.Individuals with lapsed certificates that have lapsed solely to the educator’s failure to pay backfees should log in to their ECS account, click “Register Certificates”, follow prompts to completethe reinstatement process, and pay all back fees and current registration fees (must enter creditcard information for payment). If the registration paid is to 6/30/2012, individuals must start theprocess again to register for the next cycle. (To be eligible for this option the certificate holdermust have submitted the Statement <strong>of</strong> Assurance and failed to register OR was not required tocomplete pr<strong>of</strong>essional development during the time <strong>of</strong> cycle.)

A brief meeting is required prior to June 8. Atthis meeting, participants will receive a USB drive with homework assignments and the book“Designing Services and Programs for High-Ability Learners”. As on site academy work is threehours—participants are required to complete readings and homework prior to the June 20 date. Thiswill be a morning only session as academy work will take place prior to the event.This course is designed to familiarize instructional leaders to issues related to gifted education. Course content includes—identifyinggifted students, assessing gifted programs, tracking student progress on a yearly basis, determining how the RtI process relates to educatinggifted students, and planning for improved quality <strong>of</strong> gifted programming in a school district. The course is three hours <strong>of</strong>direct instruction and three hours <strong>of</strong> indirect instruction, which includes two pre-readings, a brief assignment based on those prereadingsand the completion <strong>of</strong> an application/dissemination component.The course will meet from 8:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. at the Reddick Library Annex. Enter from Washington Street (Northeast corner <strong>of</strong>library building/complex). Books need to be picked up at the <strong>ROE</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice prior to the academy. We strongly suggest all participants register for the two day overviewand then take the two day math OR literacy content training.
