Task 4: Sustainable land use planning in face of climate change(sub-project 4, 1Apr 2013-31Jul 2014)An analysis of land cover/land use change and change intensity in Hong Kong and the PRD and itscontribution to UHI effects and aerosol distribution will be conducted. We will also investigate therelationships between urban heat island and urban structure, aerosol distribution and urban land use, andurban heat island and consumption of urban energy as well as carbon emissions as a result of anthropogenicactivities in the form of different land use options. Specifically, the Geographically and TemporallyWeighted Regression (GTWR) model will be used to study the relationship variations over both space andtime. Further, a multi-objective optimization model will be developed which accounts for objectives relatingto the afore-mentioned environmental variables, urban climate and other criteria, such as minimization ofchange, maximization of housing capacity, and maximization of green space, etc. A urban renewal area ofold downtown will be selected to conduct a case study of the multi-objective optimization model fordeveloping sustainable design adaptation measures and planning strategies for policy makers and planners. The 2nd stage of UrbanClimatic Map Study of MacauCo-PrincipalInvestigatorDSSOPT of Macau GovernmentHK$6,400,000Jul 2011 to Jul 2013The joint partnership research study aims to further understand and analysis the urban environmentaland climatic condition of Macau based on the findings of the first stage study. It focuses on the study ofwind environment of Macau. The objectives of this stage of work are:(A) To assemble and collateexisting information data and to create an GIS information platform, (B) To conduct a meso-scalesimulation of wind environment by using MM5-CLMATE model, (C)To carry out a micro-scale CFDsimulation of new reclamation areas; (D)To expertly evaluate the existing condition and to get ancomprehensive understanding of Macau wind environment, (E) To understand the wind environment ofnew reclamation areas and to evaluate its master plan. The world-wide collaboration researchers arefrom Kassel University, Hannover University, Xian Jiaotong University and HKUST.FinishedThe Croucher Advanced StudyInstitute on Urban Climatologyfor Tropical and Sub-tropicalRegionsCo-PrincipalInvestigatorThe Croucher FoundationHKD 596,000.0001May 2011 to 10 Dec 2011we propose to have three inter-connected ASIs that will bring together scientists and practitioners, disseminate existing knowledge of tropical and sub-tropical climatic regions, and accelerate theexchange and research collaboration between overseas experts and local researchers, advancedpostgraduates, practitioners, designers and professionals. We opine it is important to have a multidimensionalperspective to our inter-connected ASIs as a standalone event.ASI 1: Urban Climate forHuman Comfort; ASI 2: Urban Climate and Air Pollution; and ASI 3: Climate Change and Urban Design17/01/2013 Page 5 of 11
