Nottingham City Council,Heathfield Park,Heathfield Estate,BasfordA six-year campaign by residentsto redevelop a run-down city parkand give youngsters on theHeathfield Estate a place to spendtheir energy.Park LifeThe makeover of Heathfield Park was completed in 2009following a long campaign led by local resident KerryQuigley and others who carried out consultations withresidents; made applications for funding; and obtainedplanning permission. The cash came from a variety of sources including theNational Lottery, Waste Recycling Environmental and morethan £250,000 from Nottingham City Council.Kerry Quigley about to cut the ribbon at the opening. When I joined my local TARA (tenants“and residents association) six years agothis area had a lot of problems with youngmen drinking and getting involved inanti-social behaviour because they hadnothing to do,” says Kerry Quigley.(Ref/emep/CS19-Sept09)

“There were lots of meetings but nothingmuch had happened to change the situation. We had this derelict land and decided totransform it into an area that children andyoung people could use.We did lots of consultation“and although it was hard goingand frustrating it’s really paidoff because this park is whatpeople asked for and they feelcommitted to it.“We've worked with Nottingham City Council'sNeighbourhood Management team on theplanning and I've been to lots of meetingsabout funding and other issues which I foundquite intimidating at first.I met lots of young people“from the area and built arapport with them. You can seethat they want to be here -some of the young men haveeven been doing arts and craftswork, which was a real surprise.Nottingham City CouncilArea 2, Bestwood andBasford WardsHeathfield ParkHeathfield EstateNottingham“It's taken a long time but the facilities areexactly what kids and parents wanted - thereis a games area, and outdoor gym, and even adog-run so they don't foul the play areas. There are kids on the playground all the time, all ages, even up to 18-year olds.I wanted to finish what I'd“started for myself and becausethe kids deserved better -they'd been let down too oftenbefore. I’ve watched many ofthem grow up and somebecome adults and this is afriendly place with a good spirit.“We've got a community centre now as well, which wasn't part of the original project andlocal residents think it’s fantastic. I think a lotof them thought it would never happen butthe park is transformed and the kids love it.”Results• A community centre and a smaller youthcommunity building• A multi-use games area for basketball, footballand netball with seats and bins• New play equipment for youngsters and asecured toddlers' play area• A designated dog-walking area• Improved lighting, benches and bins and CCTV• New trees.T: 0115 915 9127W: www.nottinghamcity.gov.ukEast Midlands Empowerment PartnershipLeicester North West Community Forum, Alchemy House,90-92 Bishopdale Road, Beaumont Leys, Leicester LE4 0SRT: 0116 229 3207 E: : aruna.bhagwan@alchemyhouse.co.uk W: www.emep.org.uk
