Expanding Toward a Promising Future
A
growing community
requires a growing
school district.
Within five years, the student
population in the Tomball
Independent School District (ISD) is
expected to increase by more than
3,000, bringing enrollment to more
than 12,000. In response, in May of
2007, district voters approved a $198
million referendum called Bond 2007.
“We are pleased and thankful
that the community turned out to
support the bond,” says
Superintendent John Neubauer.
“Over the next few years, this
community will be seeing new
construction and renovations that are
exciting for our current students and promising for
our future students.”
The amount of additions and upgrades that Bond
2007 will provide is astonishing. Three elementary
schools and one high school will be built, and
classroom additions will be made at two elementary
schools and at Tomball Intermediate School. Also
slated to receive funds are a technology/staff
development facility and an agriculture project
barn and greenhouse. The latest technology, including
interactive “smartboards,” new laptop carts, projectors
and video conferencing capabilities will be added
to classrooms. Athletic facilities will be renovated,
new school buses will be added and additional
security cameras will be installed at all of the
district’s campuses.

In addition, due to the tremendous growth on
Tomball Intermediate teacher Noemi Ferries and her daughter, fifth grade
Tomball Intermediate student Maryssa, were honored during Tomball ISD’s 21st
Annual A+ Banquet. Fifty-five students and 22 teachers district wide were
recognized during the academic awards banquet for excellence in education.
Houston’s northwest side, neighboring Klein
Independent School District (ISD) now serves some
Tomball students.
“Two of our schools, Schultz Elementary and
Kohrville Elementary, serve Tomball children who are
on the edge of our district,” says Dr. Lizbeth Johnson,
Klein ISD’s associate superintendent for community
relations.
The Klein ISD, like the Tomball ISD, is growing
rapidly. “As the result of a recent demographic study,
we have two proposed new high schools, three
proposed new intermediate schools and 10 proposed
new elementary schools to be built in the next 10
years and serve this area as it grows. There are 240 new
subdivisions in the Klein ISD alone that began
development this past year — and they are all in the
northwest area adjacent to Tomball ISD.” H

T
he Tomball Independent School District (ISD)
is a public school system with a reputation
for excellence.
Enrollment tops 9,000 students, from pre-
kindergarten through grade 12, and encompasses
12 campuses.
Geographically, the district serves students in an
area of northwest Harris County and southwest
Montgomery County, which includes the city of Tomball
and Creekside Park Village, a part of The Woodlands (an
unincorporated master-planned community).
The district offers fine arts, athletics, agriculture
and other extracurricular activities to enhance its
academic program.
“We’re proud of our physical facilities and
our instructional programs,” says Superintendent
John Neubauer. “We also pride ourselves on
providing students with a strong foundation of
guiding principles.”
Klein ISD is located adjacent to the Tomball ISD in
northwestern Harris County. Its southern boundary
touches the city of Houston, and most of the district
lies between Interstate 45 to the east and State
Highway 249 to the west.
The Klein district is comprised of four high schools,
eight intermediate schools and 25 elementary schools
with an enrollment of more than 41,400 students
during the 2006-2007 school year. H

T
he Tomball area offers many choices to parents desiring a
Christian education for their children. Salem Lutheran
School views growing character as important as growing
intellect for students from grades K-8. St. Anne Catholic School
provides small student-teacher ratios and a warm, Christian
learning environment for grades K-8. Step-by-Step Elementary,
while not affiliated with any church, uses a Biblically-based
curriculum to teach grades K-6. Concordia Lutheran High
School, with an average class size of 17 students, offers a
challenging college preparatory curriculum with a focus on
developing each student’s individual God-given talents.
Rosehill Christian School and Rosehill Christian High School
provide a quality academic curriculum in a Christ-centered

Community Library provides an educational haven for
area students and citizens alike.
As a joint venture, the library pools the resources of the
North Harris Montgomery Community College District and
the Harris County Library System. It is located in a 72,000-
square-foot building on the Tomball College campus.

more than 3 million books and audiovisual materials in
addition to 100 databases of electronic publications.
Furthermore, 155 computers are available for use, as is
wireless access for personal laptops. The Internet Café is a

individual and group learning. College students and the
Tomball community can use the meeting and conference

Training for Today’s Workforce
The North Harris Montgomery Community College District
covers a 1,400-square-mile area in Harris and Montgomery
counties. It has an enrollment of nearly 50,000 students in
credit courses and 14,000 in continuing education classes,
making it one of the largest and fastest growing community
college districts in Texas.
Established in 1988, Tomball College, one of the district’s
five comprehensive community colleges, currently enrolls
approximately 7,800 commuting students. The school’s
facilities include a multi-winged building containing
classrooms and administrative offices, and a state-of-the-art
Wellness Center. The college has the district’s only veterinary
technology program, which is recognized as one of the top
curriculums of its kind in the state.

Close to the Big City, but a World Away
R
esidential developers and new residents are
setting their sights on Tomball, attracted by
the city’s friendliness, high quality of life and
its location — only 30 miles northwest of
downtown Houston.
Oakcrest, with approximately 780 planned home
sites, is the largest of the many new developments
under construction in the greater Tomball area. “Our size
is what distinguishes Oakcrest,” says Tim Fitzpatrick,
community development manager for Friendswood
Development, noting the vastness of the neighborhood
and the use of modest lot measurements, therefore
allowing a greater number of houses in the location.
“This makes the price points more affordable,” he adds.

Treeline, the site of the former Treeline Golf Club
in Tomball, is a new Ryland Homes community. Much
of the foliage that characterized the beauty of the
golf course has been saved and is being transplanted,
says Jacqui Williams, manager of community partner
programs for the Houston area for Ryland Homes. The
120-acre gated neighborhood will have 322
substantial home sites. “There will be a country club-
type feel from the moment people enter the
community,” Williams explains, referring to the resort-
style pool, upscale meeting center and abounding
vegetation at the front gate.
Pine Country of Tomball, by contrast, will have a
pastoral feel. Country lanes without sidewalks or

curbs, brick mailboxes and large lots will add to the
rustic atmosphere. “While it’s only 1 1/2 miles from
downtown Tomball, it will seem like rural living,” says
owner and developer Russ Brown. When its two
phases of development are completed, Pine Country
will contain 138 lots with single-family homes.
High Meadow Ranch features country estate
homes on two- to 10-acre lots among the rolling,
wooded hills of southern Montgomery County
between Magnolia and Tomball. The development is
built on land that was formerly the site of a
championship quarter horse ranch and, upon
completion, will encompass more than 3,100 acres.
The master-planned community features golf,
swimming, tennis, nature trails, walking paths and a
fishing lake.
Two hundred acres have also been purchased
near the intersection of Zion Road and Ulrich for
another new Tomball neighborhood, Raleigh Creek,
which will contain 340 homes.
With so many new options in the area, a country
club lifestyle, a traditional rural one, or anything in
between can be your choice in Tomball. H

hile malls, shopping centers and today’s
superstores are convenient for many of our
needs, there’s nothing quite like traditional
downtown shopping when you want to browse,
perhaps discover something new or enjoy the relaxed
pace of a shopping experience, all in an area that can
easily be covered on foot.
Downtown Tomball’s Old Town Tomball District
encompasses the original 1906 Train Depot (only
recently restored to its original condition), the
Tomball Museum Center, plus a variety of small shops
in an area bounded by Pine and Chestnut streets on
the west and east and by Commerce and Market
streets on the north and south.
There are “antique shops, jewelers, boutiques,
florists, restaurants, espresso cafés, tearooms, hair
salons and herb shops,” says Barbara Tague, president
of the Downtown Tomball Association.
Shoppers will find antique furniture, glassware,

pottery and gallery-quality art. “We have an eclectic
mix of shops that offer antiques from 17th century
pieces to Victorian, up to modern collectibles,
including items for popular decorating trends like
Parisian apartment chic, or shabby chic, and ’40s and
’50s Americana,” Tague adds. “We also have a unique
Western collectibles store, several stores that
specialize in one-of-a-kind primitives and some stores
with huge rare-to-modern book collections.”
Quilt and needlecraft shops not only have
wonderful fabrics and supplies, they also offer lessons
in these traditional crafts. For furniture that needs
painting, or a piece of elaborate fancy ironwork for
indoor or garden décor, there is no need to look
further than downtown, where artisans working out
of shops and studios can create custom designs.
Ascribing to its popularity and uniqueness,
“downtown Tomball has customers from all over the
United States that come to visit,” Tague says. H

Performing for the Pope
The Show of a Lifetime
T
raveling to Italy and singing in enchanting cities
like Venice, Pisa and Rome is a unique experience,
but performing at the Vatican is the rarest of
honors. Forty-five members of Tomball’s 80-member
Texas Master Chorale spent 10 days in Italy in June 2007,
the highlight of which was a concert during high mass
at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Appearing in such a venerable place required a
long review process. “We had to send CDs of our
performances and get approval through the
archdiocese here in Houston and through the director
of music at the Vatican,” explains Harriet Fether, the
chorale’s executive director. “Originally, we thought we
might have a chance to sing at vespers; we never
expected to sing at high mass.” The group’s artistic
director Brad Bouley made a pre-tour visit to Italy to
verify their itinerary before the entire ensemble’s
departure, and while in Rome discovered that their
appointment at the Vatican was actually for the
main event.
On the first stop of the tour, Venice, the chorale
sang in St. Mark’s Cathedral, followed by an impromptu
concert on the famous St. Mark’s Square. In Pisa, they
sang in the baptistry of the cathedral. “When we sang,
the notes reverberated through the many floors of the
building,” Fether says. “It was incredibly beautiful, but all
of this only built up to our performance in Rome.”
Fether describes about 1,000 attendees and all of
the chairs taken. “Because St. Peter’s is so huge, the
music could be heard all over the cathedral. We took our
accompanist, Sharon Goldsberry, with us, and she had
three minutes to get accustomed to the Vatican organ.
She took a deep breath and did a magnificent job.”
Echoing the chorale’s artistic director, Bouley, Fether
remarks, “it was wonderful to sing music in the places for
which it was written.” H

The Texas Master Chorale, based in Tomball, is an
ensemble of men and women that performs a
variety of tunes, including classical masterpieces,
international folk music, American gospel songs,
a cappella madrigals and Broadway hits. In
performance, the group is accompanied by a
full orchestra.
Since its inception in 1985, the chorale’s
founder, Brad Bouley, has held the position of
artistic director and conductor. “He’s the heart and
soul of who we are,” says executive director Harriet
Fether. Participating in the chorale is a
commitment for its 80-plus members, she adds,
but, “most who do, do it with their heart.”
Participants are volunteers, and many are
professionally trained musicians who come from
across the northwest Houston area. Approximately
one-third of the group is music educators.
The Texas Master Chorale’s season runs each
year from October though April and always
includes a local Christmas concert. H

Preserving the Past
Life in an Earlier Time
A
t the Tomball Museum Center, visitors can
learn about local history in a compound of nine
restored structures from the late 19th and early
20th centuries. “Most of these buildings came from
nearby areas and were moved here,” says director
Jean Alexander.
Among the highlights of the center are the Farm
Museum, a barn that houses early agricultural tools and
equipment, and the Henry Theis House, a farmhouse
from the 1860s that depicts the life of early settlers in the
Tomball area. A doctor’s office dates from 1900 and a
one-room school is circa 1920. The Oil Camp House is

typical of the dwellings of oil field workers during the
times of the booming “black gold” industry from the
1930s to the 1950s.
Staffed by volunteers, the center is open year-round
on Thursdays and Sundays, and tours can be arranged
for schools and groups on other days.
During the second weekend in December, the
historic structures are adorned with period holiday
decorations. Candlelight tours and open houses are
held. “We serve wassail [a spiced drink] and cookies, and
have a band that plays country music in the barn,”
Alexander says. H

or weekend excursions, or that occasional afternoon
off, it’s only a matter of choosing your activity.
In terms of organized team play, both the
Magnolia/Tomball Family YMCA and the Cy-Creek YMCA
offer community leagues in a variety of sports for children,
teens and adults.
Several area parks, including Spring Creek Park and
Burroughs Park, maintain excellent hiking and biking
trails. Others, like Theis Attaway Park and Kleb Woods
Nature Preserve, contain convenient paved walking and
biking paths.
For water recreation, two large lakes are located close
to Tomball. Lake Conroe in neighboring Montgomery
County stretches for 21 miles and covers 21,000 acres,
with clean, clear water for a variety of aquatic activities:

boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing and jet skiing.
Lake Somerville, located south of Bryan/College Station, is
a favorite for boating and bass fishing.
Huntsville State Park, northeast of Tomball, is the
perfect camping site for area residents because of the
myriad of recreational opportunities it provides. Situated
under tall Texas pines and filled with animal and bird life,
the park has an extensive trail system, equestrian stables
and the 210-acre Lake Raven, fully equipped with
canoe rental.

horses since the age of 3. Clark and her family moved
from the Pasadena-Clear Lake area of Houston to Tomball
because of the many equestrian facilities. “There are
stables all over the place, in and around Tomball,
including Olympic-caliber equestrian venues and
programs.” According to Clark, there are numerous
reigning trainers in the area as well, which, she explains, is
“like figure skating on horseback,” adding that it’s
extremely popular in the area.
“There are also many clubs, horse shows and riding
camps in Tomball,” Clark says. Some private
neighborhoods, such as Saddle Creek Forest in the
Magnolia area, feature their own equestrian facilities.

(Tomball EDC) is the community’s guiding force in bringing
commerce to Tomball. “We want to support the high-tech
corporate industry along with our family-owned and -
operated businesses,” says Betty Reinbeck, the executive
director at the Tomball EDC.
The organization assists companies with commercial
and industrial site selection as well as locating sources of
capital. It can also provide direct financial assistance to
offices that are new, relocating, or established and
expanding. This support may be in the form of cash grants
to create jobs or infrastructure cost alleviation. In addition,
the Tomball EDC works as a liaison between the business
community and the city.
Over the last several years, the city of Tomball has been
experiencing considerable commercial growth and has
become a retail trade center for a 20-mile radius.
Reinbeck also notes that the Tomball EDC is focused
on growth in a number of industries, including component

manufacture and services for the petroleum field and the
area of medical device manufacturing.
“Businesses find that Tomball offers lower property
taxes, a local airport and a short commute to downtown
Houston,” Reinbeck says. “Our recent commercial growth
has led to the creation of thousands of local jobs,
particularly in the retail, medical and service industries.”
With more than 10,000 personnel, computer
manufacturer Hewlett-Packard is the area’s largest
single employer.
BJ Services Company, a Fortune 500 oil and gas
equipment and services company that is headquartered
in Houston, has a location just east of Tomball that
employs approximately 500 people. BJ Services has
expanded its Tomball location (which is the company’s
worldwide training center) three times, with a fourth
expansion planned.
The Tomball area has convenient access to Houston’s
major roadways, and two rail lines serve regional industrial
sites. David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport is close by, and
George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston provides
major commercial airline passenger and cargo service. H

Fixing a $1 Billion Problem
H
ot checks—those written by customers that are bad
or worthless—cost merchants in the state of Texas
more than a $1 billion a year, half of that in the
Houston area alone, says Jeffrey Klein.
Klein is the manager of Klein’s Food and Pharmacy, a
family-owned Tomball supermarket since 1933. With Texas
State Representative Corbin Van Arsdale and the Greater
Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce Government and
Legislative Affairs committee, chaired by Clifford Parker,
Klein worked to pass legislation that allows local courts to
collect these debts.
“Since it is not a violent crime, collecting on hot
checks was not a ‘front-burner’ issue for the district
attorney’s office or law enforcement,” Klein explains. Harris
County is so large, he continues, it would often take a year
to even get an arrest warrant issued for hot check writers.
“In the meantime, many of these people were continuing
to write hot checks,” he says, “and the odds of catching
them went down every month.”
Now, thanks to these proactive community leaders, it
has become a much quicker and more efficient process.
Hot checks can be taken to the Justice of the Peace Court
for larger amounts than previously allowed, and this
judicature has the power to collect the debts. “This is a
community court and a smaller, more responsive court,”
Klein says. “We expect that warrants will be issued and
served more quickly.”
The ruling was passed by the Texas Legislature
and Governor Rick Perry signed it into law in the summer
of 2007.
Klein has also spearheaded a Hot Check Task Force to
ensure that the city of Tomball, Harris County and
neighboring Montgomery County work together on these
efforts across jurisdictions. H

A long-time Tomball company
is in the forefront when it comes to
giving us more healthy eating
alternatives. “To develop healthy food
that tastes like junk food is our goal,” says
Bob Beeley, the founder of Dixie Diners’
Club, a subsidiary of Dixie USA, a
manufacturer of medical products.
Beeley’s company packages foods that
are meat-free (they are soy-based
instead) and sugar-free.
Beeley is obviously a success; Dixie
Diners’ Club has already celebrated its

30th anniversary in business. While it started with a vegetarian
“meatloaf” mix, the company now has 400 products (200 are
soy-based) to offer consumers. The products are available locally
and around the country, and the company has strong Internet
sales. Although they may be perceived as “health foods,” they are
for anyone who wants to eat delicious food while avoiding
refined sugar and animal fat.
The company operates out of a 40,000-square-foot
building that looks like a red barn located on a seven-acre site.
Beeley and his family, along with partners Brenda and Jim
Oswalt moved to Rosehill, just west of Tomball in 2000. “We tired
of the commute in to Houston every day to our previous
location, and decided to locate the business closer to our
homes,” he says. “We found an attractive site in Tomball and built
our present plant and office facility there.”
Tomball’s much newer establishments include commercial
developments like the 350,000-square-foot Tomball
Marketplace Shopping Center, which is located at the
intersection of two major highways, FM 2920 and Highway 249,
in an area that is considered a regional retail hub for Tomball,
northwest Harris County and southwest Montgomery County.
Tomball Marketplace’s first tenant, Academy Sports +
Outdoors, which opened in May 2007, is anchoring the center.
Other retailers and restaurants are expected in 2008, according
to officials from the developer, Houston-based Weingarten
Realty. “Tomball is a great market,” says George Weatherall, vice
president and senior regional director. “The city of Tomball has
demonstrated its commitment to the growth of its retail sector.
We think this will be a great amenity for the people of Tomball
and surrounding areas.” H

Chronicle’s May 2007 listing of Houston’s Top 100 Companies,
the Chronicle 100.
The rankings were based on the financial results of
publicly-traded, Houston-area companies that were
collected and analyzed by Standard & Poor’s Investment
Services. Data was used from 2005 and 2006. Private
companies were also included on the list and were ranked

laine Chrisman, executive director of the The
Regional Arts Council, was chosen by the GTACC
staff as the 2006 Volunteer of the Year. Chrisman
has held positions on the Tomball Holiday Parade and
Tomball Night Committees for many years, and had a
leadership north Houston Class of 2007

Judy deyo 2006 Citizen of the Year
J
udy Deyo grew up in a small Kansas town and
loved Tomball immediately because it felt like
home. She worked for Cy-Fair ISD for 14 years, the
last eight as an elementary school secretary. In 1991, she
began working as a monitor tech in SICU at Tomball
Regional Medical Center. In 1993, she decided to fulfill a
lifelong desire to become a nurse and was accepted into
the nursing program at Tomball College. She was first
introduced to TOMAGWA Ministries Medical Clinic when
she served as the Student Nurse Liaison to the then-small
nonprofit clinic, which she applied for because she knew
that someday she’d like to work for a similar clinic. After
graduating from nursing school, Deyo began working as
a staff nurse at Tomball Regional Medical Center.
In late 1995, Deyo agreed to serve as the executive
director of TOMAGWA Ministries Medical Clinic, which
serves the medical needs of northwest Harris County and
southwest Montgomery County regions. Truly a servant-
hearted leader, Deyo places the needs of her staff and
the welfare of her patients over her own on a daily basis.

Says Deyo, “One of the best things about having
worked at TOMAGWA is all of the wonderful, caring
community people I have met.”
Beyond her duties as executive director, Judy Deyo
is also a board member of the Christian Business
Luncheon and Tomball Lions Club. She is very involved
with the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce
Health Services and Awareness Committee. She
participates in the Heart of Montgomery County
Collaborative, and the Harris County Community Access
to Care Collaborative. Deyo was also a member of the
discussion panel at the Houston International
Community Health Summit.
Deyo is an elder at Windwood Presbyterian
Church, where she serves on many boards and leads
study groups.
The Citizen of the Year Award has been given each
year since 1969 to various area residents or business
owners in recognition of their civic, professional, church
or club service. H
