year. The warm weather and cool
breezes are always an encouragement
to go outside the office. While you are
out of the office, why not take the

Your Delaware County Chamber of Commerce is
always working on creating opportunities for you to
enhance and develop those crucial business connections.
In June we are proud to host our annual Multi-Chamber
Business Expo in coordination with several other
Chambers of Commerce in the Delaware Valley. This
year’s Expo will be held at the Sun Center Studios in
Aston! The Expo is a great opportunity to network with a
wide variety of business owners and operators from across
the Delaware Valley, not just in Delaware County. The
greatest advantage is to those members who participate
with a booth of their own and capitalize on the
opportunity to provide personal contact with the
participants attending as guests.
Networking in these environments is one of the
greatest ways of growing your business’ contacts. In a few
short hours you have the opportunity to speak to
hundreds of potential customers as well as meeting new
service providers who can strengthen your business as
well. The event is open to the public and is a great
opportunity for those in both the Business-to-Business as
well and the Business-to-Consumer fields.
I hope to see everyone in June at the Multi-
Chamber Business Expo! On top of all the great
networking and sales opportunities; you’ll have an
opportunity to see a major movie production studio. Just
like in business, what goes on behind the scenes of a movie

Unemployment is hovering around 8.2%. Businesses can’t get working capital, can’t keep costs down, and can’t
get customers coming in the door so they are reluctant to hire or are forced to lay off staff. Unemployment is
much higher if you are a minority or without a college diploma. Can you imagine how difficult it must be is you
have a mental illness?
One in five families can imagine because one in every five families has
someone who has been diagnosed with a mental illness like schizophrenia,
bi-polar or major depression. Since 1959, CareLink
Community Support Services has been providing the support needed
to recover from mental illness in Delaware County.
Help us do our work by contributing to our 3rd annual Golf & Tennis
Classic on Monday, June 4, 2012. This fund raiser helps staff Care-
Link’s Career Services. The outing is at the beautiful and historic
Llanerch Country Club on West Chester Pike in Havertown, PA.
Enjoy lunch at 11am, round-robin mixed tennis or best-ball golf start at
Noon and cocktails and hors d’oeuvres afterwards during our Silent Auction.
CareLink’s Career Services helps individuals with a mental illness by providing individual attention for career counseling
to establish and pursue their educational and vocational goals. Many of our consumers need guidance in returning
to school to complete a GED or post high school education or training program. Some look to us for help
in becoming computer proficient or to write a resume. All need specialized support to address the needs of this
very underserved population.

Comcast Corporation announced
that it is providing Metro Ethernet
service to Widener University.
With this solution, more than 7,800
students and faculty will have 24/7
access to technology services such as
cloud computing and web-based
educational tools. When a snowplow
accidentally struck one of Widener’s
central telephone poles during a
blizzard, the university quickly realized
that the many precautions it had taken
to ensure 24/7 Internet access was
simply not enough to withstand a
disaster situation. Comcast responded
by offering an Ethernet Dedicated
Internet (EDI) solution that allowed
Widener to access the Internet via its
own independent pathway. This was
done by utilizing existing fiber cable
that resided beneath the campus, and
allowed the university to completely
bypass both its central communications
pole and its primary data center, going
straight to a secondary data center
instead. In the event of an outage, this
secondary network, which also
provided more bandwidth for the same
price as Widener had previously been
paying, would allow the university to
stay connected even if its primary
network went down.
The new Chick-fil-a at the
intersection of routes 452 and 1 will be
opening for business on Thursday, May
3rd with a Chamber Ribbon Cutting.

Rick Durante, Vice President of
Education at Franklin Mint
Federal Credit Union (FMFCU),
was elected Vice President of the
Delaware County Literacy
Council Board of Directors for 2012-
2013. Durante has been a board
member for three years. At FMFCU,
Durante manages the Learning and
Development Department and youth
education programs. He represents
FMFCU within its partnering schools
and provides financial education in
many Delaware County school districts.
He also oversees the Franklin Mint
Federal Credit Union Foundation as
Executive Director. Durante has been
closely associated with the Delco Hi-Q
competition since 2004. He is director
of the scholastic competition, now in its
64th season. Hi-Q is the oldest,
continuous academic quiz competition.
In 2006, the National Youth
Involvement Board (NYIB) recognized
Durante for having the largest one-year
increase in the number of students
reached in financial literacy seminars.

Red Lobster in Springfield is inviting
members in to see their million dollar

Colleen Morrone will take the chief
executive officer position of Goodwill
on May 23rd. When former CEO, Ted
G. Van Name, who has held the job for
20 years started, the organization served
190 individuals a year. There were 200
employees with a budget of $2 million.
Now, Goodwill serves 19,000
individuals a year, there are 700
employees, and the budget is $30
million. Once it became established,
Van Name said Goodwill’s goal was to
raise $10 million in revenue, serve 1,000
people and place 100 people in jobs by
2000. Although he plans to remain
connected to Goodwill through
fundraising efforts and the executive
alumnus program, Van Name said
having Morrone follow him made him
comfortable to retire.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
The United State Congress is debating Highway
Reauthorization legislation. The current authorization for the
surface transportation programs expires March 31.
The House proposal has received support from business
groups across the country, including the U.S. Chamber of
Commerce. They feel the proposal encourages private sector
investment and is consistent with the Chamber’s priorities,
including the consolidation of programs, eliminating
mandates, cutting red tape and government bureaucracy,
increasing funding flexibility while requiring accountability,
and providing more opportunity for leveraging scarce federal
resources.
“These reforms can contribute to more effective
investments and can increase Americans’ confidence that the
federal government is ensuring that their tax dollars are spent
wisely and effectively….We are pleased that House leadership
supported the Chairman’s efforts to avoid major cuts to
highway, transit, and safety programs, and look forward to

hear from members of our delegation on issues

in a financial crisis. The state of disrepair has a negative effect
on the economy, and a modern, safe and efficient
transportation infrastructure is necessary for the free flow of

Foundation Overview
The Foundation of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce (FDCCC) is a
501(c)3 organization that was created in 2003 by the Chamber with the purpose
of advancing business, education and leadership throughout Delaware County.
Programs supported by the Foundation include:
Leadership Delaware County – a 9-month leadership development
program that educates participants through a series of interactive
sessions led by top professionals in a variety of fields. Participants
develop business leadership skills and learn about their community
and issues facing Delaware County. Over the years, Leadership
Delaware County has built a base of nearly 200 alumni from a variety
of organizations throughout the county, and our current class
of 19 business leaders represents this diversity of fields.
Youth Leadership Academy – the Academy initiative is a three day
program held each year to inspire Delaware County high school
sophomores to perform at their highest potential as leaders. The

Events
On February 21st, the Foundation sponsored a recognition
luncheon for the Marple Newtown High School Junior
Initiative program. This program offers all students in
their junior year the opportunity to explore various career
options in order to better prepare for life beyond high
school. At the luncheon, 61 students were recognized for
their high performance in this year’s program. These students
had the opportunity to interact with business leaders
from the Chamber of Commerce and to present final
thoughts on their experiences.
