Before itbecame the landscape of vineyards it is today, theplace was filled with orchards. In August, my fatherwould load us, and my poor mother, into the car– sometimes as many as six kids – and hitch a tenttrailer to the back, and we would head off into theRocky Mountains from Edmonton, wending our waytoward that magic valley. The whole time he wouldtalk about peaches.Those certainly weren’t the most comfortable trips,but they were the most fun. We had no money, butwe had each other – which meant kick fights, andscreaming arguments, and Dad’s hand swingingback around from the driver’s seat to smack whoeverhappened to be in his trajectory, and tears, and Momyelling “Look out!” and counting licence plates, andsinging made-up songs, and finally, rolling down outof Revelstoke, the land opening up in front of us likea great golden vision; the promise of sunshine andpeaches stretched out ahead as far as anyone couldsee. You couldn’t have known a happier man in thatmoment than my father.Years later, when he was diagnosed with cancer,we had a family reunion there, to say our goodbyes.It seemed like the right place to do it. And yet,nobody seemed capable of uttering the words.Death is really too big to put into sentences; toocomplicated. And anyway, he was perfectly happy tosit out on the verandah that August, looking downover the whole valley as if he owned it. But I think hesensed, acutely, the limits of a life, of happiness.My father didn’t die that summer, or the next. Heheld on for another two-and-a-half years, duringwhich time he changed, became sadder, moreintrospective, more afraid. The last time I saw him,I didn’t say goodbye, but I knew it was the end forhim; we both knew. All the joy had gone out of him;there would not be another summer. It must beterrible to realize you’re dying, and yet, one day, weall will. And who can say how each of us might cometo accept our fate? He’s a founding member ofToronto’s Soulpepper Theatre, where he directed Travesties, RingRound the Moon, Mary Stuart, King Lear, Our Town, Hamlet, The Winter’s Tale andothers, as well as acting in A Christmas Carol, The Time of Your Life and Blithe Spirit,amongst others. He has directed and acted in theatres across the country. He waspart of Robin Phillips’s company at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre, where he playedHamlet, directed by Mr. Phillips. Last in Stratford to direct the 2000 production ofHamlet, with Paul Gross, he was part of the Stratford company from 1983 to 1987.Some of his favourite roles were Berowne, Hotspur, Autolycus, Posthumous andSir Andrew Aguecheek.
