Lifestyle Page 8Clubs Create CrazeDallas ElmoreReporterTwo new clubs have been addedto the overwhelming amount of organizedactivities that are offered at theHigh School.Students can now join either therollerblading club, the P90X club, orboth. Each club was founded thisyear on student initiative with an eyetowards creating a healthy lifestyleamong the current generation.Rollerblading club, founded byseniors Emma Blackwell and DillonConwell, created the club out ofbuilding on their favorite activity:Rollerblading. Most kids, they realized, have forgotten about the activitythat filled many of their pre-adolescentdays, and their aim is to bring itback to these students.“What other club allows rollingwith fun and promotes a healthyHEALTH:“When you cease todream, you cease to live”-Malcolm ForbesAndrea MayesReporterEdgar Allan Poe says, “All that we seeor seem is but a dream within a dream.” Everyoneexperiences dreams, and these nightlyvisions are a wonder to psychologists and alimitless medical marvel. The scientific studyof dreams, or oneirology, was primarily establishedin the mid-19th century. This waswhen rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep wasdiscovered, and pioneer scientists NathanielKleitman and William Dement’s experimentproved a correlation between REM sleep anddreaming. Since then, numerous sleep studieshave been conducted with an attempt togather knowledge and explain many of thelifestyle that will carry through to our nations futuregenerations?” responded senior Emma Blackwellwhen asked about who should join the club. The group plans to start rollerblading retrainingclasses, and eventually, contests and races to see theextent of ones skills.Another group that is growing up around fitnessis the P90X club, organized by Brandon Reichertand Jeff Rogers. The club, based around the popularworkout program developed by Tony Horton, wantsto bring in kids who have not had the time, place orcommunity to do a regular fitness program.“P90X is for the kids who want to live the fitlifestyle without the pressures of sport” said sophomoreBrandon Reichert .The workouts, which are based around the fitnessidea of muscle confusion, work all parts of amysteries that still surround the perplexityof dreaming. Moreover, dream studies have takenplace to peruse the spiritual and emotionalconnection with dreams. Some are convincedthat dreams can have secret or supernaturalmeaning. This theory dates allthe way back to the ancient Egyptians andGreeks who thought that the gods and goddessesspoke to the human soul throughdreams. It has been proven that dreamsare linked to the human subconscious, butscientists are still unsure whether dreamsphysiologically reflect one’s innermostpsyche, although many have thought thisideology to be unquestionably true.Psychologist Sigmund Freud says inThe Interpretation of Dreams, that “Thereis a psychological technique which makesit possible to interpret dreams, and... if thatprocedure is employed, every dream revealsitself as a psychical structure whichperson’s body. Different videos in thehome workout program address differentparts of the body on different days, never allowing muscles to rest and forcingthem to adapt to the high stress excercises. Each tape features the trainerTony Horton, who spends his time oncamera not only doing the workout, butencouraging participants to push themselves. The same things that attractedseniors Jeff Rogers to the program willatrract you.“The musclebound infomercials attractedme to the high intensity muscleconfusion workouts. The results speakfor themselves” said the extraordinarilybuff Rogers.has a meaning and which can be inserted atan assignable point in the mental activitiesof waking life.”Another aspect of oneirology that puzzlesscientist is the recent discovery of luciddreaming. Lucid dreaming is when a personis aware that they are dreaming. This allowsthe dreamer to not only actively participatein the dream, but control the events, people, and environment that the dream is centeredaround. Ordinary dreams are often not remembered, have no connection to reality, and have no concept of time, but none ofthese traits apply to lucid dreams. Luciddreams are also connected to false awakeningand even cognitive skills.Poe concludes that “The realities of theworld affected me as visions... while thewild ideas of the land of dreams became,in turn,—not the material of my every-dayexistence--but in very deed that existenceutterly and solely in itself.”
