Objective 2: Conserving Plant DiversityOngoing actions contributing tomeeting the target• Implementing target 5 (see below)Target 4:Protecting the world’s ecologicalregionsAt least ten per cent of the world’s ecological regionseffectively conserved.Low priority or long-term additionalwork• Collaborating with partners to determinethe extent of European ecological regionseffectively conservedScopeThis target seeks to conserve plant diversity in 10% of each of the world’s ecologicalregions. These are broad ecosystem types, for instance montane or coastalecosystems. Given that this is a global assessment, the challenge will be to work withinternational partners to assess the UK’s contribution to the protection of ecologicalregions. It is suggested that the results of target 5 (which will help identify importantplant areas within all ecological regions) will help this assessment. From rocky coastal habitats such as StDavid’s Head in Pembrokeshire (below) tolowland blanket bog such as the FlowCountry in northern Scotland (right) the UKcontains a variety of habitats each hosting itsown special plant assemblages.BOB GIBBONS/NATURAL IMAGE20
