Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib
(Bidar)
As and when this world is infested with sins,
injustice, cruelty and evil, God Almighty has sent
some pious soul to this world to destroy the above
forces, so that righteousness and truth may prevail.
In other words, God himself takes birth in the form
of some saintly person. It is believed that Guru Nanak
Dev Ji, the first Guru of Sikh was the incarnation of
God. At the time of his birth all kinds of evil forces
were rampant in india and the situation was even
worse in Panjab. During this era of darkness Guru
Nanak Devji appeared in this burning globe to preach
love, equality harmony, truth and service to humanity.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on Kartik Purnima
1469 at Talwandi Rai Bhoe, now known as Sri
Nankana Sahib, His Father was Mehta Kalu a revenue
accountant and mother Mata Tripataji.
As per the old chronicles, Guruji, one morning
, as usual went for a bath to nearby stream called
Vaeen, which was flooded. He did not come out for
three days continuously. people assumed that he was
drowned, but in fact he was absorbed in prayers and
had become one with Almighty. After this incident,
Guru Nanak Devji decided to dedicate his life for the
service of the people and preach righteousness, love
for humanity, equality and brotherhood. Guru
Nanak Devji out his tour programme divided into
four missionary tours called “Udasess” in sikh
chronicles. In all his tours Bhai Bala and Bhai
Mardana were his companions. Bhai Mardana used
to play Rabab and Guruji used to sing the divine
songs daily at dawn and evening.
He started his second missionary tour from
sultanpur. After visiting many nearby place,
Dharamkot, Bhatner, Bhatinda, Bikaner, Sirsa,
Marwad, he reached Ajmer, the center of muslim sufi
faqirs. From Ajmer he left for Mount Abu via Sarohi,
where a religious temple of Jain sectexists. At Mount
Abu he had religious discourse with the Jain, form
there he reached Indore, After crossing Narmada he
entered C.P. (now M.P.) and then reached
Onkanreshwar. This is the place where Guruji composed
the verses called “Dakhni Onkar” After visiting
Burhanpur, Akola and Hingoli then Guruji
reached Mal Tekri at Nanded.
Nanded is the Historical place where now
stands one of the most sacred shrine of the Sikhs
called “Takhat Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib. “It was
from here the Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth
Guru of the Sikhs left for his heavenly abode. At Mal
Tekri, a muslim saint by name Lakkar shah was anxiously
waiting for the arrival of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Guru Ji appeared there and fulfilled the wishes of
the saint by blessing him. At this place stands a beautiful
Gurdwara known as Mal Tekri Saheb. From
here, after visiting the places of kandar and Kailash,
Guru Ji reached Bidar which is now one of the districts
of karnataka State.
In those days, Bidar was a small village on the
hilly trach. Greenery was not visible throughout the
area due to lack of water. The inhabitants were longing
for clean sweet drinking water. Guruji sat on the
outskirts of the village on the foot of a hill and asked
Mardana to play Rabab and started singing divine
song. There was a monestary of Muslim dscetice very
close to that place. pir Jalanuddin and his followers
heard the divine music and came there. After some
deliberations, the pir was impressed by the personality
of Guruji and paid obeisance. The pir also narrated
the woeful condition of the local people due to
the scarcity of the drinking water. Water at Bidar
was saltish and not fit for drinking purpose. The condition
was so bad that, the people from the surrounding
areas were not prepared to get their daughters
married to the boys residing in Bidar. The local people
who thronged to seek the blessings of Guruji also
complained about the hardships they facing for want
of clean sweet drinking water. On hearing the plight
and prayers of the people, Guruji was very much
moved and by uttering “sat kartar” removed a
rubble of stone from a nearby hillock with his right
foot and to the surprise and delight of all, clean and
sweet drinking water gushed out from that place.
This place has become famous as “Nanak Jhira”, Jhira
means a spring of water. This event took place in
April 1521 AD. Since then, clean and sweet drinking
water is flowing continuously from this spring and
by the grace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji it will continue to
flow forever. The water is good for health and cures
many incurable ailments.
Time passed by and history that Sikhs from
Punjab came to Dakhan, Hyderabad of Nizam State
between 1832-1833 During this period the Nizam of
Hyderabad was facing grave law and order problem
in his state. The financial position of the state was
also not good. To overcome this problem the Nizam
was advised by his chief minister to request Maharaja
Ranjit Singh Ji (Shere-E-Punjab) to send sikh battalion
to Hyderabad State. Maharaja Ranjit Singh
readily accepted the Nizam ‘s request and sent the
sikh battalion to Hyderabad state. The battalion was
known as “Bara Biradari” as it consisted of 12
Biradaris (units), each Biradari consisting of 1, 200
soldiers under the command of a Risaldar. Out of the
12 Biradaris 11 were on foot i.e. paidal and I Biradari
was mounted on horses. Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s
force was made a part of Nizam ‘s irregular force.
They camped a Attapur Sikh Chawniat Hyderabad
which is now called Sikh Chawani. The Biradari’s
were deployed in the state as per the security
requirment.
In the beginning of last quarter of the 19th century
the security problems of Nizam state were
solved. The sikh force was placed under the control
of district police. The Biradaris were posted in all 16
districts of the state and were rotated periodically.
They were paid more salaries than the state with
additional facilities to prevent them from returning
to Punjab. They were provided with job security i.e.
the legal heir was eligible to succeed the deceased
job. The Sikh force was assigned the duty to escort
and guard the jails ay district head quarters. Bidar
was one of the 16 districts under the Nizam’s state.
All the hard core criminals of the Nizam State were
forces. Under this pretext the Sikhs started coming
to Bidar and visited Nanak Jhira of offer prayers.
In Bidar that camped at Sikhpet near Janwada
which is now called as chikpet.
In 1946 Panth Bhushan Sant Bishan Singh Ji
Class 1 PWD Govt. contractor has an opportunity of
a contract of construction work very close to Sri
Nanak Jhira Sahib Bidar. He frequently visited
Nanak Jhira with a few prominent personalities of
Hyderabad to pay homage. He was inspired to build
a magnificient Gurudwara at this place. In 1948 he
started the contruction work of Gurdwara and built
a temporary small building. The Parkash of Guru
Granth Sahib Ji was performed in this building.
Sardar Karam Singh Ji Subedar and Sardar Garja
Singh were the only Sikhs residing in Bidar at that
time. He brought sewadars from different places to
Bidar to perform the daily routine work in Gurdwara.
Bhai Sahed Singh Ji was made the first Granth of the
Gurdwara and sardar Bachan Singh Ji was made the
Jathedar of sewadars. Temporary quarters were built
to accommodate the sewadars. Langar was also
started simultaneously. During the period Nanak
Jhira was like a complete jungle with lots of wild animals,
panthers and poisonous snakes. There was no
provision of electricity and the people had to manage
with kerosene lamps.
In 1950 a small committe was formed to manage
the affairs of Gurdwara. The Sikhs from AP,
Maharashtra and Karnataka were made the members
of the committee. Panth Bhushan Sant Bishan
Singh Ji was mad the first president with shriman
seth Laxman Das as the vice-president and sardar
Khushal Singh Ji as the secretary. On the occasion of
Guru Nanak Dev Ji ‘s jayanti, the first chowki from
Hazur Sahib was brought to Nanak Jhira under the
leadership of Sant Baba Joginder Singh Ji Jarhedar
of Gurdwara Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib. The tradition
continues till date from 1950 as the chowki from
Hazur Sahib is brought to Nanak Jhira every year
on Guru Nanak Devi Ji birthday.
Sardar Bishan Singh Ji along with Sant Baba
Kartar Singh Ji visited different places in the country
to raise funds for the construction of the new
building of the Gurdwara. Large amount of funds
were donated by the sangat of Bombay and
Vijayawada. The foundation stone was laid by Sri
B.D. Jatti the then Chief Minister of Mysore of State.
Eventually in the year 1965 the construction of the
new building of Gurdwara Sahib, Amrit Kund and
sarovar were completed.
On 22nd March 1965, in the auspicious occasion
of Hola Mahalla the first Parkash of Guru
Granth Sahib was performed in the newly constructed
building of Gurdwara Sahib. To mark this
historical event Samapthi of 21 Sri Akhand Parh
Sahib were performed.
In 1965 Panth Bhushan Sant Bishan Singh Ji
got the Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira Sahib registered
under the society ‘s Act. The same office bearers continued
till the demise of panth Bhushan Sant Bishan
Sardar Joga Singh Ji was unanimously elected as the
President of Gurdwara Sri Nanak Jhira in 1967. Under
his stewardship as the President, Gurdwara Progressed
in leaps and bounds and made a mark in the
world map.
By the blessings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Nanak
Jhira, which was once like a jungle with no basic
amenities like electricity and water has developed
tremendously. Now the Gurdwara has sufficient accommodation
and all the basic facilities for the pilgrims.
It has become famous world wide as the second
Panja Sahib and an important place of worship
for the Sikhs. Piligrims from all over the world visit
the sacred shrine every year to pay homage and seek
the blessings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Bhai Sahib Singh Ji
Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded the Khalsa
Panth on the historical Bisakhi day of 1699 by
baptising the five beloveds (Panj Piyares) at Takhat
Kesgarh Sahib, Sri Anandpur Sahib. He got himself
baptised by the Panj Piyares and one of those five
beloveds was Bhai Sahib Singh Ji. Bhai Sahib Singh
Ji was from Bidar born to Sri Gurunarayana and
Srimati Anakamma. He passed Guru Gobind Singh
Ji ‘s litmus test in flying colours and got the name of
Biddar permanently engraved in golden letters in the
sikh history. He fought many religious battles and
attained martyrdom in the battle of Chamkaur Sahib.
It is perfectly true that if we want to be successful
in this world we have to use our wisdom, cleverness and
all fair or unfair means but if we want to be merged with
God we should have the quality of BHOLAAPAN (innocence).
Bhagat Kabir Ji clarifies:-
Kahu Kabir Bhagat Ker Paaiaa
Bholai Bhai Melai Ragraaiaa. (S.G.G.S.-324)
We should develop love for the Lord, as the Lord
could be attained with love only in a routine manner without
much formal observances.
Keep in mind that BHOLAAPAN does not mean
ignorance or foolishness. There is a big difference between
the two. It is a very high state of mind when a man
drenched in PREM with God treats his friends and enemies
as equal. Nothing can be gained by mere cleverness or
clever moves on our part.
A man having a nature of BHOLAAPAN says everything
clearly without hiding anything. He is innocent
like a child. If someone knocks at the door and the father
sitting inside the home does not want to speak to him, he
asks his child to go and tell him that his father is not at
home. The innocent child will go and tell the man that his
father is saying that he is not at home.
BHOLAAPAN will develop PREM (love),
DHEERAJ (patience), DAYAA (compassion), SANTOKH
(contentment), NIMARTA (humility), SHARDHA (respect),
SIDAK (faith), VISHVAASH (confidence) etc.
These are the important factors which unite us with God.
It means that God, who can not be seen with these eyes
and which is also not believable, we still go forward to
search Him presuming Him to be true. This encourages us
to put our first step in the dark and then with the blessings
of God we reach our destination.
Once, a Pandit Ji was doing KATHA in a village
every day. A GAWAALAN (milk seller) lived in a nearby
village. She used to go from village to village selling milk.
She saw this gathering everyday but did not have time to
sit and listen. One day, while passing through she sat there
and heard that Pandit Ji was explaining a Shabad of Bhagat
Namdev Ji :-
Deva Paahin Tree le Ram Kahit Jan Kas Naa tare.
(S.G.G.S.-345)
It means if God can float stones in the sea, why are
we worried? He can also help us. Here actually a reference
is made to the story in Ramayan about Ram Chander
Ji that when he had to cross a sea to reach Lanka he asked
his soldiers to write the name of God ‘RAM’ on these
stones and throw them in the sea. These stones then started
to float on the sea and a bridge was made out of them and
the whole army crossed over to the other side.
The innocent GAWAALAN having a nature of
BHOLAAPAN was very impressed with the story. She
started doing JAAP by repeating “RAM”, “RAM” while sitting,
going here or there, and doing any other work day
and night. In order to go from one village to another she
had to cross a small stream through a bridge. For this purpose
she had to walk an additional one kilometer to reach
the bridge. She had now become perfect in her JAAP. One
day, she remembered the teaching of the Pandit Ji that if
with the Grace of God stones could float on the sea, then
why could not she walk on the small stream, for crossing
over to the other end? Day by day her determination was
becoming stronger and stronger. So, one day, repeating
“RAM”, “RAM” she started to walk on the stream as she
would have been walking on the bridge. She reached the
other side safely without any difficulty. She was very happy
as there was now no need to go to the bridge.
One day she decided to invite the Pandit Ji for
lunch under whose guidance she was able to do this. She
went to him and requested him to visit her home for lunch.
He agreed to come the next day. The next day she came
and the Pandit Ji accompanied her. When they reached the
stream, the GAWAALAN as usual started walking on the
stream and reached the other end, whereas Pandit Ji was
looking for the bridge. On seeing this she requested from
the other end “Pandit Ji what is the problem? Come on, I
am waiting for you.” The Pandit Ji, who had no alternative
but to follow her, entered the stream. As soon as he entered
the water he started to drown. The GAWAALAN
shouted “Why don’t you start repeating “RAM” “RAM”
mantar, like me, which I have learnt from you.” The Pandit
Ji replied “I am very sorry that it is only your “RAM” who
helps you but not mine as I have not developed all the qualities
like you so far”.
The Pandit Ji then realized that she had started following
the lessons practically which he had been preaching
to others since many years without any results.
It is said “PRACTICE, WHAT YOU PREACH”
SAINT - THE BLESSED SOUL
Guru is a blessed soul who is merged in the Lord and
receives the Word (instruction) directly from Him. He helps
others to recite/repeat the Word, to understand and imbibe
its import, to live as per the instruction contained in the Word,
to unite with God with the help of the Word and to fix attention
on Naam i.e. God and His Word. A true Guru does not guide
others to seek his protection to sing his praises, to pray to
him, to submit to his will or to fix attention on him. He does
not become a burden on others, considers comforts and
miseries alike, is helpful to others, has compassion even for
foes, wants everyone to flourish, considers the doing of the
Lord as sweet and guides and helps all to recite Naam. He
has subjective control over lust, wrath, greed, attachment and
pride. Such a soul is merged with God and His Word and is
ever eternal. Such a soul has crossed the ocean of creation,
ever sings the praises of the Lord and his companions also
cross the ocean of creation.
Health Care
Human Body
Dr.Harbans Singh, M.D.Homoeo (London), Ayur Vaid Rattan,
M.A.(English, History, Punjabi) Mob : 27013196, 9868887980
Individual soul is a conscious power. It is also
called: soul, life, vital force, breath, spirit, etc. Only this
has come after covering a long distance. But this does
not come alone. Its assistants, viz, mind, intellect,
memory and ego also accompany the soul. These are
also called: (AMqhkx) subtle body. Mind is the king of
the human body. (sMklp) Concept and alternation
(ivklp) occur through the mind only. Intellect: Through
it views, determination, and the scrutiny of good and
bad is done.
Memory: It is linked with recollection power. It is the
store-house of the auditing of all types of mental
impressions.
Ego: It is the symbol of affection. Contacts with the
materials are established through this only.
The subtle body acquires power of consciousness
from the soul and propels the gross body. The organs of
the gross body function according to the instructions
of the mind. Since this body has got mind, it is called
“mwnv srIr” Manav Body.
This gross body is also called: Corpse, body,
physique, inanimate, etc. It is the resident of the visible
world. In this connection Gurbani explains like this:-
Meaning:-The gross human body is a wall of water,
to which the pillar of air stablizes. The mortar of mother’s
blood and the drop of father’s semen has been applied to
it. This is a cage made of bones, flesh and veins, in which a
poor bird of animated form resides.
Gurbani has clarified the difference between both
the bodies in these lines. Bird is the soul of the animated
being, i.e., it is subtle body. A cage in physical form
has been provided to this for liviing. Mind is a distinct
part of the subtle body, and has a direct link with
Timeless God. On the other hand it is all in all in respect
of the gross human body. It has got two main parts:
Conscious Mind and Unconscious Mind. All the
activities of the gross body are performed through the
conscious mind. Such marvellous powers are hidden
within the unconscious mind about which it can not be
even concieved. When these powers, after crossing the
precinct of the unconscious mind, manifest in the
conscious mind, its miracles confound every body. For
the reason, it is said that the human body is an
immeasurable store of countless charismatic powers,
miracles and wornders. This is priceless and intricate
riddle of God. By unscrewing this, the inaccessible,
fathomless and imperceptible miracullous powers, which
are dormant within the unconscious mind, can be
awakened. The inventions like T.V., Computer, Mobile
Phone, website etc. are the proof of the awakened
powers of the unconscious mind. Gurbani edicts:-
