RESEARCH SCIENTISTS POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWS
Edward H. Snell, Ph.D.
Position: Research Scientist
Appointments: Dr. Snell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Structural
Biology at the University at Buffalo.
Research: Dr. Snell is developing experimental techniques to understand, control, and
mitigate the radiation damage that occurs in X-ray crystallography studies of biological
structures. Complementary to this, he is developing methods to enable a wider range of
samples to be studied by neutron diffraction, a technique limited by crystal volume
requirements. Ultimately the goal is to use a combination of controlled radiation
damage and neutron diffraction methods as techniques to resolve biological mechanisms
especially where those mechanisms are redox or free-radical based.
Education: Dr. Snell received his B.Sc. (Hons) in Applied Physics from John Moore
University of Liverpool, UK, and his Ph.D. from the Chemistry Department of the
University of Manchester, UK.
Noteworthy Contributions: He holds a patent entitled “Method for Measurement of
Physical Characteristics of Crystals.”
Timothy C. Umland, Ph.D.
Position: Research Scientist
Appointments: He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Structural Biology at the
University at Buffalo.
Research: A major interest of Dr. Umland is structural studies of the severe acute respiratory
syndrome (SARS) coronavirus, with an emphasis on viral proteins involved in replication
and host interactions. Other interests include determining the mechanism by
which members of the Hox protein family act as “master regulators” of cellular differentiation
and body segmentation, particularly during embryonic development, and the 3
-hydroxysteriod dehydrogenase's role in steroid metabolism.
Education: He received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University at Buffalo and his
Ph.D. in Crystallography from the University of Pittsburgh.
Noteworthy Contributions: He was an invited attendee at the 2005 National Academies
Keck Futures Initiative Conference The Genomic Revolution: Implications for the Treatment and
Control of Infectious Disease. His research also provided the first structure of tetanus neurotoxin.
Hongliang Xu, Ph.D.
Position: Research Scientist
Appointments: He serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Structural
Biology at the University at Buffalo.
Research: Research interests of Dr. Xu include direct methods of X-ray and neutron
crystallographic phasing, computational crystallography, and mathematical biology.
Education: Dr. Xu received both his B.S. and his M.S. in Computational Mathematics
from Peking University, and his M.S. in Industrial Engineering as well as his Ph.D. in
Mathematics from the University at Buffalo.
