Five (5) courses constitute the full programof 350 Hours (does not include required Hours of work experience). Those individuals in recoveryshould have a minimum of two (2) continuous years of recovery. Applicants should possess aminimum of a high school diploma or GED certificate and be at least 18 years old.Attendance Requirement: Completion of required Hours offered in each course is predicated on“Clock Hours.” The student receives credit for those Hours she/he is present at class sessions. Thestudent is expected to be present and participate in all class sessions. Where special circumstancesdictate, the instructor may permit student to make up a missed class. The physical andpsychopharmacological effects of the use/abuse of alcohol and other drugs. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome,disease concept and an overview of the diversity of alcohol and substance abuse treatmentapproaches will be studied, as will be 12-step and other self-help methods.In addition to scheduled Monday evening classes there are five Saturday workshops that meet from8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.: 5/1, 5/15, 6/12, 6/26 and 7/10.5197 10 6:30 p.m.-10:00 p.m. (MS) 4/26 - 7/26 DCC J Dehn $559CAS103 ALCOHOLISM AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR PART II(75 Hours) Knowledge of methods and techniques utilized in counseling special populations, relapseprevention, and problems of communicable diseases (HIV/Aids, STD’s, T.B., etc.) will be examined.Particular attention will be given to the development of counseling skills necessary to effectively dealwith special populations (e.g. male/female, racial/ethnic, gay/lesbian, mentally ill, etc.)Simulated interviews will be utilized to demonstrate practical application of techniques. In addition,the area of human growth and development will be dealt with in depth. Particular attention is given to issues regarding confidentiality, privileged communication,privacy, and ethical responsibilities, as well as legal issues and elements of documentation. Thedevelopment of competence in the thorough understanding of the tenets of the Canon of EthicalPrinciples will be taught. Field work placement and evaluation are provided as part of the course.5199 10 6:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. (W) 4/14-7/7 DCC V Freeborn $583Life Saving - CPRCPR002 BASIC LIFE SUPPORT FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS(7 Hours) This course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages including ventilationwith a barrier device, a bag-mask device and oxygen, use of an automated external defibrillator, andrelief of foreign-body airway obstruction. This course is intended for participants who provide healthcare to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.Required text: “American Heart Association BLS for Health Care Providers.” Text will be needed atthe first class.
