Upcoming Events:The Luck o’ the Irish to You! <strong>Preston</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>’sGaelic Society presents its annual Ceili on Friday,March 8 th , from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. in the schoolcafeteria. Come and enjoy the live music and dancing!And then, on Sunday, March 10 th , enjoy the ThroggsNeck celebration of St. Patrick, patron of theArchdiocese of New York. The festivities begin with a9:00 a.m. liturgy at St. Benedict’s Church, followed by afree breakfast in the church hall. The parade beginsaround noon and marches down East Tremont Avenue toHarding. All are welcome to join the <strong>Preston</strong> contingent.Junior Ring Night: A very special night for Juniors.The tradition of Junior Ring Night goes back to the earlyyears of PHS’s existence. The ceremony is both solemnand fun, uniting the class with the long line of<strong>Preston</strong>ites who have proudly worn their school ringsand providing official recognition of the Juniors asupperclasswomen and the rising leaders of the school.Each year the class chooses a theme and the music forthe ceremony and works with their homeroom mentorsto decorate the auditorium appropriately. Many studentshave important roles to play in the ceremony itself,which is held in the evening so that family members canattend. Afterwards, a reception is held in the cafeteria,hosted by the Freshman Little Sisters and their mentors.This year’s ceremony will be held on Friday, March 15 that 7PM in our gymatorium.<strong>Preston</strong>’s annual College Fair will also be held onMarch 21 st . This event is mandatory for all 10 th & 11 thgraders and their parent(s)/guardian(s). This is a greatopportunity to speak to many different College andUniversity representatives all in one place.RECENT EVENTSThe annual Information Night for undecided 8 th graderswas held on Thursday, January 24 th . We had a largeturnout for this event which allowed prospectivestudents and their families who may have missed ourOpen House in October to visit and speak with currentstudents, faculty and staff.On January 29 th the PAS Auto <strong>School</strong> DriverEducation program conducted their orientation for theSpring course which began on <strong>February</strong> 11 th .Catholic <strong>School</strong>s across the Archdiocese were proud tojoin in the “Feeding our Neighbors: A Catholic <strong>School</strong>Response” campaign. From January 27 nd through<strong>February</strong> 3rd h schools and parishes in the Archdiocese,in partnership with Catholic Charities, engaged inactivities to help alleviate hunger in the greater NewYork area’s already-strained food pantry shelves furtherdepleted by Hurricane SandyJunior Advisement Day was held on Monday, January29 th to give rising seniors the opportunity to learn abouttheir senior course choices. The day began with apresentation on conducting an effective college search.This was followed by an overview of the many electivecourses available to Seniors in ’13-’14, and time forJuniors to hear department chairpersons & seniorteachers elaborate on course descriptions and answerstudents’ questions. All students had the opportunity tobe interviewed by science teachers to ensure that thosehoping to major in science would choose appropriateelectives for their Senior year. Juniors were also invitedto pose for the photos that will be integrated into theirRing Night ceremony (which is scheduled for Friday,March 15 th , at 7:00PM). A follow-up with Juniorparents was held on <strong>February</strong> 13 th . Remember, yourdaughter will need you to sign off on her course choices,so please discuss these important decisions with her. Thelast date for all students to return their registrationforms for academic year <strong>2013</strong>-14 is March 1 st .Once again, Princeton Review will be offering an SATprep course here at <strong>Preston</strong>. The course will begin onThursday, March 7th and will meet for 10 classes.This year’s Salute to Scholars Evening Reception heldon January 31 st celebrated the achievements of those 8 thgrade students awarded merit scholarships to attend<strong>Preston</strong> next fall. They were treated to a lightrefreshments and a panel discussion with students andfaculty and tours for those interested.Parents/Guardians may schedule a meeting withteachers at any time, but Report CardDistribution/Parent/Teacher Conference day, held on<strong>February</strong> 7 th , provided them with the opportunity tospeak with all of their daughter’s teachers on the sameday, with the report card in hand. Too often parents andteachers meet or speak only when the student has aproblem. How great it is, on this day, to listen to some2
