Humans, mind, body, heart andsoul together, are made in the image of God. Our hands, like God’s, are an instrument of power. So too, our feet, our limbs, all our features share as part of creation thegrandeur and beauty of the Creator. As our head andheart denote wisdom and love, so do the bones, veins andflesh signify some aspect of God written into our humanbody. The contemplation of the body of Christ mightteach us what this deeper meaning is. It is no wonder thatone young woman commented, “I had to drop my walls,my guard to bow. I felt vulnerable. It was hard.” In bowing,we are invited to go deeper into the mystery of ourvery own bodies carrying the Holy Spirit. You are encouragedto bow following the words of institution.HOW DO WE PREPARE TOCELEBRATE LITURGY? Not onlyhave the musicians, lectors, and presiding ministersprepared for the celebration. We all do.We prepare as we select our clothes, get ourchildren ready, and begin to move toward thechurch building. Perhaps you have a routineyou follow each Sunday. This is part of whatprepares you to join in the celebration. Manypeople read the Scripture readings for the Sunday so theyhave had time to think about them in advance. This mightbe a good idea of something to do as a family, taking timeto discuss them. Then you can compare your thoughtswith the homily on Sunday. The readings are listed in thebulletin each week.MINISTERS TO THESICK AND HOME-BOUND: Communionminister to the sick and homebound:Anyone who is currentlybringing Communion to the sickor homebound is asked to contact Michael Prendergast.Likewise, if you know of any homebound parishioners orthose in nursing homes or care center that are in need ofthe sacraments please call Michael at 503-281-4429 X12.NARTHEX: The narthex of the church is the part weusually refer to as the vestibule. “Narthex” is just a moretechnical or maybe old-fashioned term. Most of us do notuse it anymore. Mostly we just call it the vestibule. It is thepart of the church building leading from the outside mainentrance to the main seating area. Now if you hear theword, you'll know to what it refers.GIFTS FOR THE POOR: Please bring non-perishable food, diapers, and toiletryitems and drop them in the St. Vincentde Paul barrels in the entryway of thechurch each Sunday. You are encouragedto place one of your items in the basketthat is held at the ambo during thepreparation of the gifts.

St. Andrew AnnouncementsSt. Vincent de Paul/St. Andrew Emergency ServicesIn the Wind and WavesThroughout my career, I’ve faced every new opportunitywith a mixture of excitement and terror. One of thosemoments came when The Wall Street Journal hired me toreport from Chicago, a city where I knew only one otherperson. One Sunday, I wandered into Mass at Old St.Patrick’s Church. Monsignor Dan Cantwell exhorted usto count the number of times Jesus says in the Gospels,“Don’t be afraid.” I counted, and found over a hundredsimilar messages peppered throughout the Old and NewTestaments. Those words calmed me that day in my newwind-whipped city and through many challenging adventures since then.In her poem “The Summer Day,” Mary Oliver reminds us that we are givenone wild and precious life. Inevitably, that will involve risk. And fear. A fierce windwill whip us around. The sea will roil. The land beneath us will shift. But Christ isthere, sometimes calming the wind and waves, sometimes leading us safely to shore, and sometimes letting the storm blow just long enough to wake us up.Judith Valente, author, poet and journalist for PBS-TV.
