Gynecological, surgical, and psychiatric problems, as well as problems caused byaddictive drugs are beyond the spectrum of our services, and the patients arereferred to appropriate cooperating institutions. Our outpatient care offers also medical expertise in a number of pediatricsubspecialties:• Endocrinology and Diabetes• Cardiology• Nephrology and Urology• Neuropediatrics• Nutrition and Obesity• Pulmonology and AllergologyFor the specialized offices an appointment is necessary.Comprehensive center for people with Down syndromeTeam leader: Bettina Baltacis, MDThe comprehensive center for people with Down syndrome at the RudolfstiftungHospital was opened on March 21st 2006 (World Down Syndrome Day), andrepresents the only institution of this kind in Austria. Our center provides counseling, medical, and psycho-social care to people withDown’s syndrome and their families. Furthermore, it serves as a hub among anetwork of cooperating institutions, primary care pediatricians, general practitionersand a variety of specialists. The clinic is aligned to a multitude of excellenttherapeutic services (physiotherapy, ergotherapy, speech therapy, psychologicalsupport, psychotherapy and others) which are available in our hospital. If continuoussupport or treatment is necessary, it is organized through accorded referral to theprimary care setting. Social service support comprises advice in questions ofavailable benefits, kindergarten and school, as well as accommodation, jobintegration and recreational activities. Here too, there is a close co-operation withother agencies. The consultations take place in a team setting, consisting of medical doctors, psychologists and social workers. Appointments can also be made on a one-to-onebasis to deal with individual needs.Inpatient Ward (Ward 14B)The inpatient ward has nine rooms with a total of 24 pediatric beds. It providesinpatient care for newborns, infants, children and teenagers up to the age of 18.The indication for inpatient care is usually established by the physicians of theoutpatient unit, except for admissions for planned diagnostic or surgical procedures. The latter are referred by the respective clinics of our hospital (e.g. urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, or ENT).The most common indications for inpatient care are:• Acute gastrointestinal infections (viral and bacterial gastroenteritis)• Acute infections of the lower respiratory tract (pneumonia, obstructivebronchitis) and asthma• ENT infections (e.g. pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis)www.vienna-omi.at 19.12.2012

• Urinary tract infections• Neurological disorders (febrile seizures, epilepsy, and facial nerve palsy)• Baby-care problems (nursing, interaction mother-child problems)Infrequently inpatient or daily clinic stays are necessary for planned diagnosticprocedures, such as:• Voiding cystoureterography• Endocrine testing• CT or MRI examinations under sedation• Diabetes education or changeover to another diabetes treating regimen• Starting an antiepileptic medication and respective educationEndocrine disorders and metabolic diseases, immunological diseases, hematologicaldisorders, cardiovascular disorders and rheumatic diseases are also frequentlyencountered. Some of them are followed by our specialized offices; others arereferred to the specialized services of other hospitals.Patients with onco-hematological diseases are not primarily admitted to ourdepartment. Those coming for another reason and diagnosed with such a diseasehere are transferred to the University Clinic of Pediatrics (located at the GeneralHospital of Vienna and St. Anna children’s hospital).Department of NeonatologyThe Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Rudolfstiftung Hospital serves about1500 births per year. In order to ensure modern medical service for risk pregnanciesa department of neonatology with intermediate care facility (IMC unit) was opened in1997. Although belonging to the Clinic of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, it isaccommodated in a close proximity to the labour ward, thus allowing optimal care topremature and sick infants in the delivery room immediately after delivery. Dailybriefings with the obstetric team provide maximum continuity and safety. Round theclock availability of specially trained neonatologists allows attendance of apediatrician in the delivery room whenever necessary. Attendance of a pediatrician athigh-risk delivery (caesarean, vacuum, forceps premature, multiple) is obligatory.Parents and their healthy babies are perceived as a unit. We aim to aid and intensifythe relationship between mother and her newborn child within the frame of a bondingand development supporting care concept. We offer 24-hour rooming-in. Medical andnursing procedures are kept to a necessary minimum and adapted to the rhythms ofthe mother and baby. This individual care approach encourages the competence ofthe mother and supports her in the confident handling of her baby. The department not only meets the most modern medical standards, but also workswith the concept of family-centered neonatology. The realization of this project placesthe individual needs of the young family in the foreground. Accompanying the wholefamily in this highly sensitive phase is a priority task for our staff. Family rooms offernew fathers the opportunity to spend the first few days with the mothers and thenewborns. In addition to uncomplicated pregnancies and term births, risk pregnancies andpreterm children are served as well. The infrastructure and equipment of the IMC unitallows state-of the-art care for preterm children born beyond the 30th week ofgestation. The IMC unit has five intensive care beds for premature and sickwww.vienna-omi.at 19.12.2012

newborns. There is joint care and support for mothers and (sick) children by aninterdisciplinary team (doctors, nursing personnel, psychologists, social workers, andphysiotherapists).Neonates needing continuous ventilation are transferred to Level III neonatal carecenters. As an important element of bonding and development supporting care, greatimportance is naturally given to breast-feeding. Breast-feeding is not only source offood, but also fulfills the important need for mother and child to be close. The WHOrecommends full breast-feeding for the first six months. Competent breast-feedingadvisors are available at all times to help young mothers. Our outpatient breast-feeding clinic and a weekly breast-feeding advice group alsooffer competent help and support for questions and problems arising after patientshave been discharged. Together with the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology we areBFHI certified (certification as a “baby-friendly Hospital”; a WHO initiative) since2011.The Department of Neonatology also offers an outpatient care, centered on pretermborn children and term children with peripartal complications. Alongside with routinefollow up programs, we offer developmental diagnostics by specially trainedphysicians, as well as baby-care counseling, and SIDS prevention education. Weoffer also counseling by a skilled nurse for a range of infant problems (e.g.restlessness and sleeping problems, infant colics, skin problems, infant feeding, behavioral disorders, etc.).The opening hours of the neonatology outpatient service are afternoons, strictly by appointment.www.vienna-omi.at 19.12.2012
