Thisinvolves field trials to assess<strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> pre-feedingin reducing <strong>the</strong> amount<strong>of</strong> <strong>1080</strong> applied whilstmaintaining a high kill rate<strong>of</strong> target pests.Ongoing.N/ADoC/AHBKea by-killstudyResearch by DoC and AHBinto <strong>the</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-target effects<strong>of</strong> <strong>1080</strong> <strong>on</strong> kea.Ongoing.An initial study was carriedout following <strong>the</strong> fate <strong>of</strong>kea with radio transmitters.Initial results showed thatall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>on</strong>itored keasurvived two operati<strong>on</strong>s. In<strong>the</strong> Franz Joseph Glacieroperati<strong>on</strong>, six kea (<strong>of</strong>seventeen m<strong>on</strong>itored) werepois<strong>on</strong>ed. A subsequentstudy is planned to establish<strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> risk to NewZealand kea populati<strong>on</strong>from <strong>1080</strong> operati<strong>on</strong>s andopti<strong>on</strong>s for risk mitigati<strong>on</strong>.This m<strong>on</strong>itoring is part <strong>of</strong>a l<strong>on</strong>g-term study so anysubstantive update will notbe available for severalyears.DoCOptimisingpossumc<strong>on</strong>trolResearch into <strong>the</strong> effects<strong>of</strong> using different rules forinitiating possum c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>on</strong>kamahi and o<strong>the</strong>r canopypopulati<strong>on</strong>s including cost/benefit analyses.Ongoing.DoC is using results <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> research as <strong>the</strong>y cometo hand to develop pestmanagement modelsfor managers to <strong>use</strong> todetermine <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sequences<strong>of</strong> varying possum c<strong>on</strong>trolintervals.12
