This wasabout 1875-76 and it was about that time that a pakeha farmer, Morrison byname, petitioned Parliament for him to use private roads to obtain access tothe railway station at Waikanae. Whakarongotai is Ngati Awa/Te Ati Awamarae and was stipulated in the Court Order (dated 1948) a meeting place for NgatiAwa/Ngati Toa/Ngati Raukawa people.The then leading chief of the Parata whanau Tom Parata OBE being responsible forturning his whanau marae over to the people of the purposes as state above.Another unique happening at the time of the appointment of Trustees was the factthat all women were nominated as trustees under section 439 of the Maori AffairsAct 1953.I was a Trustee of Whakarongotai Marae from 1977 – 1998 and have just beennominated at the AGM of Trustees on 16 September 2012 to return as a Trustee.Whakarongotai Marae is the principle home of Ngati Awa/Te Ati Awa kiWaikanae.There are recording in the minutes since 1952 our Iwi involvement with Crownagencies, Local agencies.The foundation of all major decision for our Iwi the foundation of where many huibeen held to resolve issues of the day.Where identities representing Ngati Awa/Te Ati Awa where start from.9 | P age
