CitroënC3GLOSSARYe-HDi Diesel ENGINEThe e-HDi 70 Airdream engine is capableof 83.1mpg and CO 2 emissions of just87g/km combined with the EGS gearbox.It has a reversible starter-alternator thatworks in tandem with an e-booster toprovide a seamless Stop & Start function.Going further than other similar systems,the e-HDi’s Stop & Start puts the engineinto idle mode while decelerating beforecoming to a complete standstill. This reducesconsumption by 15% in urban driving.HIGH-PRESSURE DIRECTINJECTION DIESEL ENGINECitroën’s HDi diesel engines operate withthe fuel under extremely high pressure,enabling microscopically precise injectioncontrol. With this level of managementit’s possible to inject at different timesduring the same engine stroke allowingtotal control over the combustionprocess. This has allowed our engineersto reduce carbon monoxide emissionsby 40%, unburned hydrocarbons by50% and engine particulates by 60%.Fuel consumption is 20% lower than aprechamber diesel engine, resulting in anequivalent reduction in CO 2 emissionsand thanks to the torque available at lowengine speed it could be argued thatdriveability is now better than in petrolengined cars.ANTI-LOCK BRAKINGSYSTEM (ABS)Computer-controlled braking assistancedesigned to prevent the wheels fromlocking under extreme braking. Thisenables the car to continue being steeredand therefore controlled during this brakingincident. The Citroën C3’s ABS system isfurther enhanced with EBA and EBD.ELECTRONIC BRAKEFORCEDISTRIBUTION (EBD)A conventional ABS system cannot accountfor any of the four wheels wanting to lockmore quickly than the others (for example,two of the wheels may be on snow and twoon tarmac). EBD reads the decelerationrate of each wheel individually and appliesthe ABS principles accordingly.EMERGENCY BRAKINGASSISTANCE (EBA)As drivers we find it difficult to instinctivelybrake very hard, but this is often what isneeded in those rare emergency situations.The EBA system recognises our ‘attempt’to brake hard and in combination with theABS and EBD systems instantly applies themaximum stopping power possible.ELECTRONIC STABILITYPROGRAMME (ESP)This is computer-controlled traction assistanceand is provided primarily through thebraking systems. The ESP’s control unitconstantly compares where the driverintends going (through the position of thesteering wheel) with where the vehicle isactually going and, if necessary, makesspeed corrections to each wheel individuallythrough braking or engine torque to keepthe vehicle ‘in line’.MYWAY coloursatellite navigationMyWay is completely integrated into thevehicle which avoids the risk of theft.The design has been created for easeof use and with steering wheel controls,navigating from your phone to the satellitenavigation couldn’t be any easier.MyWay allows you to define routes, stopsand places of interest with the addedbenefit of vocal instruction. At the touch of a buttonyou can view a range of data like fuelconsumption, average speed and mileagepossible at your current fuel level.Radio data system (RDS)Traffic information on FM radio, allowingthe station name and other information tobe transmitted alongside audio information.Variable PowerAssisted SteeringA system that provides extra powerassistance for a vehicle’s steering at lowspeeds (such as turning a sharp corner) andless assistance during high-speed situations.Front seat beltpre-tensionersIn the event of a crash, a pre-tensioner willtighten the seat belt almost instantaneously.This reduces the load on the occupant ina violent crash. Like airbags, pre-tensionersare triggered by sensors in the car’s body,and use explosively expanding gas todrive a piston that retracts the belt. Seatbelt pre-tensioners also lower the risk of“submarining”, which is when a passengerslides forward under a loosely worn seat belt.ISOFIXA standardised and more simple methodfor installing child seats, each seat is‘clicked’ into place via a three pointsystem. On the Citroën C3, Isofix isinstalled on the outer rear seats.34
