Coyote Country | 103.1 FM | 23 | 103.1 FM | Coyote CountryJASON ALDEAN continued“ I was young, Aldean says. Hell, I probably would of worna sombrero if they told me to”.Well, none of it worked and Aldean was dropped fromthe label.Today, Aldean’s sound shows he has found his target. “ She’sCountry,” that seems to resemble Led Zeppelin’s hit” Black Dog,”to” Hicktown” and” Johnny Cash“, that all have 80’s rock bandguitar licks that drive what Aldean says to be his sound. “I’vealways leaned toward guitar,“ he says. “It just sounds nastier”.It took a few years for things tocome around. By the time it did,Aldean had a marriage, a daughterand had already been to everyrecord label in Nashville twice. “Ithink they were sick of me at thatpoint” Aldean said. This is where Aldean learned therewere two types of people in Nashville.Leaders and followers. He realized he had become a follower. If you like whatyou hear, don’tmess with it.”-Jason AldeanAldean is one of the few acts in Nashvilleto use his band on his records. This wasa practice for bands of the 60’s like BuckOwens and The Buckaroos and MerleHaggard and the Strangers, but notsince then had this been the norm.Aldean told the label. “If you like what youhear, don’t mess with it”.With Aldean’s single release of “Big Green Tractor”, a song writtenby David Lee Murphy, Aldean catapulted himself into superstarstatus. In 2010, Aldean is the hottest ticket going.JASON ALDEAN|Bobby Randall“Once I got back to playing the kind of music I like, things reallystarted clicking”. In the beer joint days, Aldean would play aGeorge Strait song then go right into a Guns and Roses song.Jason Aldean’s concert at Soaring Eagle resort in Mt. Pleasant,April 9th sold out before tickets even went on sale. Look for Aldeanat the Midland Co Fair in August 2010. 103In the music business, there are two types of people. Leaders and followers. If you are a leader you will take chances by sticking to your guns. You go with yourgut feeling, you never compromise and pray success will find you. If you are afollower, you will find yourself always behind the curve and if you are lucky a closesecond is the best you can ask for.Nashville has been knownto have both leaders andfollowers.W h e n s o m e o n e f i n d ssuccess, you will findseveral followers trying tojump on the bandwagon.Nobody inNashville reallyknows what isgoing to be thenext big thing. The Dixie Chicks burst onto the national music sceneand immediately followers or copy cats began to show up. Point in hand…Theband Shedaisy or Mustang Sally and 10 other girl bands that never made itfurther then their own press release party.Nobody in Nashville really knows what is going to be the next big thing. Manypeople will tell you they do, but the truth is no one knows. When Jason Aldean moved to Nashville in1998, he was 21 years old. It wasn’t longbefore he found himself signed to Capitolrecords. A native of Macon Georgia, Aldeanhad already played his share of beer jointsand honky tonks. Aldean’s father actuallybooked his son’s band into college townsin Florida, Alabama and Georgia.Aldean says “ I grew up in Georgia, it’s oneof the hotbeds of Southern rock” “I grew upon Hank Jr., Alabama, The Allman Brothersand Skynard mixed in for a little flavor.”Needless to say his style of music wasn’treally what Capitol records was lookingfor. “They weren’t really signing a lot ofhat acts back then,” Aldean recalls.” I’vealways worn a hat,” the singer said. Theywanted to take away my hat and softenmy sound. “I was trying to conform to whatthey wanted me to be or what they thoughtwould work, verses what I’d always done”.JASON ALDEAN Continued on Next Page18 holes of scenic challenging golf with fast, undulating greensMonday-Friday • 18 holes w/cart$25.00up to 4 personscall for T-Time*must present couponcoupon expires at the end of the 2010 SeasonPleasant Hills Golf Club4452 E. Coyote Country | 103.1 FM | 1011 | 103.1 FM | Coyote Country2ndAnnualRandallRideFirst, I would like to thank everyone whoshowed up on Father’s Day last year to makethe first Randall Ride a tremendous success.Kevin Wagner, Danny Bloom, your spouses, mylovely wife, Miss Tee and 103 Country…I could have never pulled it off without you. Ialmost worry about being able to match theperfection of 2009, in 2010.80 motorcycles of all shapes, sizes and styles left the Red Oak inSanford Michigan around 10:00 am on Father’s Day 2009. Severalstops and some 5 hours later, everyone arrived in Shields, Michiganat the Shield’s Music Festival. This was all without incident or issue. To our Road Captain, Kevin Wagner …job well done my friend.Prizes were given away for many different things throughout theride, but probably the most memorable was Dave Augustine ridinghis 1947 Panhead. For entertaining many lookers all withinquiries and for being the topic of afternoon conversation, Davewon himself a vintage Sawyer Brown tour jacket to go with his everso perfect Vintage scooter.June 19th, 2010It was a ride of compassion for others notso fortunate. If you have not personally experienced thenightmare of Cancer yourself, you surely knowsomeone who has. If you haven’t, it’s only a matterof time and… you will. Thanks to everyone who knew the ulterior motiveof the ride, because we were able to give over$3000.00 to the local Cancer services. Most of you saw my wife carrying a mini camthroughout the ride. I’d like to tell you she nevercomplained once... I’d like to tell you that, but itwas more like..., well you get the picture.RANDALL RIDE continuedof you who witnessed that historical momentknow why I now have a constant ringing in myleft ear and major hearing loss. The Shield’s Music Festival was our final destination.Again, everyone arriving safely and without incident. We were all entertained by the fine sounds of ButchHeath and his Classic Country Band. You could sayit was the perfect ending to a perfect day.The 2nd Annual Randall Ride is scheduled for June 19, 2010. For detailsstay tuned to 103 Country or contact me at: Bobby@103country.comThere is an extended ride this year for anyone interested. It will head up the4th of July and include a tour of Yellowstone. Yes, that’s in Wyoming!God bless everyone of you and... Let’s Ride.— Bobby 103I can’t say thank you enough to all the sponsors. You know who youare and thank you so much.It would be hard to pick out a favorite stop, but one that comes tomind is the Estey Market in Rhodes, Michigan. It’s a verysimple country market, but it has the charisma matchedonly by Dave’s ‘47 Panhead. The Estey Market brought smiles to everyone’s faces. It wasthe first sign that yes indeed, this was going to be a great day.Although on the surface, the ride was aboutcamaraderie amongst new friends, old friends andanyone who could keep a two wheeler rubber sidedown and in formation. It was about much more that just that.Being the trooper she is, we have put together a45 minute highlight CD of the 2009 Randall Ride.It will be available this year.Leman’s Green Apple Barn was more than a delight. It would be hard to pick between the cider slush andthe homemade donuts. Both heaven sent and madewith love. The donuts? Mouth watering with every bite, but left you looking for your Richard Simmons videoand a pair of tights. The cider slush? Scrumptious asit was... I’ll just say... Bathroom break anyone?I guess the highlight of the day was ChrisSchaeffer and her first time on a Harley. Rounding the lastbend as you enter the Village of Blanchard…the beautifulmirror-like Blanchard Millpond is the first to welcomeyou. On its banks stands the DeWitt Lumber Companyof Blanchard. If that millpond could speak, it would tellyou the story of how Mark DeWitt and his son Homerestablished DeWitt Lumber Company there on the banksof that millpond in 1890. Of course this could only be doneafter clearing the land, by hand, six years earlier. Thestory would go on to reveal that in addition to clearing theland, this father and son would go on to build the millponddamn, the original lumber company building, and theDeWitt Mill. Huge logs were “floated” down the millstreamand turned into the lumber for the lumber yard. This lumberwas then used to build local homes, churches, barns, andother businesses throughout the Central Michigan area. After Mark DeWitt’s death, Homer DeWitt and wife, Mary, took over the operation of the mill, and broadened thebusiness to include grinding feed and flour, as well asretail sales. In 1967, the lumber company building wasstruck by lightening, and burned to the ground. The familyquickly made the decision to rebuild, and the starting overprocess began. As they grew, more storage space wasneeded, which meant several more buildings were added.Later, as their business flourished, it was now Homer andMary’s daughter, Myrtle, and husband Leon Camp, whowould continue to run the business until Leon’s death in1977. It was at this time that yet another generation tookover at the helm. This time, it would be Leon’s son AlanCamp, and son-in-law, Dennis Riley, who would run thebusiness for the next 28 years. In 1990, DeWitt Lumber Company celebrated 100 yearsas a family run business, and a second story addition wasadded for office space, and featured a showroom area. That summer they held their 100 th Birthday celebration, appropriately, at the Blanchard Millpond Park. It includedlog rolling contests, steam engine and lumber sawingdemonstrations of a time gone by.In the mid 1990’s a large storage building was built on the south sideof the road for additional lumber storage. In 2003 another locationwas opened, DeWitt Windows and Doors in Mt. Pleasant. After Dennis Riley’s death in 2005, Alan Camp, and wifeJoAnne became the sole owners at a time when mostare looking to retire. Alan and JoAnne were now involvedin the day to day operations of two large and growingbusinesses, DeWitt Lumber Company, and Loafers Gloryin Blanchard. Wishing to retire, Alan sold the historic DeWittfamily business to the family of Matt and Lynn Esch. Nowit is Matt who will pave the way for the future of the DeWittLumber Company, as they prepare to celebrate its 120 thyear of service to the Central Michigan area. For DeWitt Lumber Company of Blanchard, history hasbeen made, and the village of Blanchard owes its’ placeon the map to a father and son team who had the visionand strength to make it a reality.Mark and Homer DeWitt’s Lumber Mill began in the 19 thcentury, grew and prospered throughout the 20 th century, and continues to grow in the 21 st century. That Blanchard Millpond has many fond memories of thepast, and hopes for the future. If it could speak, it wouldsay “thanks”, to all who have played a role in its history, andwhose life’s work made it possible. It would smile, and sayhow special it all is to be at the heart of this wonderful 120 thBirthday Celebration on its banks…where it all began. 103
