I can’t tellyou how many emails and phone calls that I have received (including one fromEurope) telling me what a great time they had and this event has obviously set thestandard for <strong>Ferrari</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>America</strong>s annual meets. Realistically this type <strong>of</strong> meetcould not be held in some parts <strong>of</strong> the country that just don’t have the revenues orthe membership to make this possible. We were fortunate enough to have themembership and the venue here in Los Angeles, which provided a backdrop thatonly could be duplicated by a few cities in the country.I could go on and on with accolades about people that put in timeless hours andeffort to make this whole meet a success. There are a couple <strong>of</strong> names that standout above the rest. First <strong>of</strong> all, the glue that held the whole meet together and theperson who brought the money in from the sponsorships and rode herd on all <strong>of</strong> usto make sure all <strong>of</strong> our individuals assignments were on time and were cost-effectivewas our Chairman, Marv Landon. We were faced with the biggest budget <strong>of</strong>any annual meet in the history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ferrari</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>America</strong>, and we have succeeded.In fact, the Southwest Region appears to have even made a pr<strong>of</strong>it. Also worth mentioningare the people who spent an enormous amount <strong>of</strong> time on the project: theywere Tom Brockmiller and Wally Clark. Tom was responsible for the Mercato andevery phone call that came in that no one wanted to take. Wally Clark set up theAvenue <strong>of</strong> the Stars Concours with Shin Takei and Fred Bogardus. We’ve been back from the Annual Meet in Los Angeles a few days. It was areally terrific event! We arrived about noon on Wednesday, the first day <strong>of</strong> theevent. Everyone was friendly and helpful, things went smoothly and the weathercooperated with sunny days and low 70s temperatures. The Century Plaza Hotel,situated in the midst <strong>of</strong> Century City along the Avenue <strong>of</strong> the Stars, was the hosthotel, a good choice. Things went quickly at registration, where we got goodie bagsfilled with all sorts <strong>of</strong> neat things--c<strong>of</strong>fee cups and c<strong>of</strong>fee, posters, pins, patches,stickers, a key fob, the event program and lots <strong>of</strong> magazines and brochures. Many<strong>of</strong> these items were provided by generous sponsors <strong>of</strong> the event.There was a seminar in the afternoon on the Concours, Coppa Bella Macchinaand Coppa GT judging. The people who attended learned lots about what to do andnot do in preparing their cars and themselves, and how the judging process works.After the seminar, we wandered through the Mercato and the Automotive Fine ArtsSociety (AFAS) art display, munching on the tasty hors d’oeuvres. It was hard to seeeverything and visit with friends, but the Mercato and art display (and munchies)were back on Thursday afternoon too.On Thursday, you had only to walk out the door <strong>of</strong> the hotel to be at the Concours.The event committee arranged to have traffic blocked from the half <strong>of</strong> the Avenue <strong>of</strong>the Stars next to the hotel so the <strong>Ferrari</strong>s could be placed along the street. Can youimagine the surprise <strong>of</strong> the many workers in the high rises on the other side <strong>of</strong> thestreet when they looked out their windows and saw the cars?!! This meet definitelyhad a L.A. flavor!Friday, presented several choices. Some people took the drivers’ school at theCalifornia Speedway, a new and well-designed track with a large oval and a niceinfield course. Judging from the faces <strong>of</strong> the drivers that evening’s dinner, the daywas a big success.Other folks took advantage <strong>of</strong> another sunny California day to go on the Rally toParamount Ranch. The route took them along the coast and then along the famousMulholland Highway to the Ranch, site <strong>of</strong> a western movie set and an abandonedsports car race track. Those people also had great smiles at the end <strong>of</strong> the day.For those competing for the Coppa Bella Macchina awards, judging took place onFriday morning. If you were one <strong>of</strong> the 37 people who signed up to compete for thisaward, you also had to win a platinum award (95 points or higher) in the concours tobe eligible for this competition. This narrowed the field <strong>of</strong> competitors to 12 cars.While the Concours focuses on the originality and authenticity <strong>of</strong> the cars, the CoppaBella Macchina tests the operability <strong>of</strong> everything on the car. Each car has its ownjudge and it takes about 2 hours to check out every item on the car to make sure itoperates as it did when it left the factory. Most <strong>of</strong> test takes place while the car isstationary, but the last bit <strong>of</strong> judging is done on the road to check for things likebrake pull and cancelling <strong>of</strong> turn signals. Everything on the car must operate correctlyto pass this test. But, there are some very dedicated enthusiasts out there and 8people won a Coppa Bella Macchina award.Friday night, we were treated to a lovely dinner in the Petersen AutomotiveMuseum, a terrific automobile museum. The guests <strong>of</strong> honor for the evening includedChuck Queener (illustrator <strong>of</strong> the event poster), Phil Hill (the featured speaker with aslide show presentation), Dan Gurney, Carroll Shelby, and Jack McAfee. After dinner,Rally and Coppa Bella Macchina awards were presented to honor those competitorswho successfully met the challenges <strong>of</strong> the day. The silent and live auctionscontinued through much <strong>of</strong> the evening, with proceeds going to the 11-99Foundation to benefit widows and orphans <strong>of</strong> the California Highway Patrol members.The highlight <strong>of</strong> the auction was the bidding for a new 360 Spider with a portion <strong>of</strong>the proceeds over the MSRP going to the 11-99 Foundation.On Saturday, people had the choice <strong>of</strong> going to the track or taking one <strong>of</strong> themany tours—Rodeo Drive, Universal Studios, or the Getty Museum. We went tothe track to check out the <strong>Ferrari</strong>s in action. They had the usual run groups to allowdrivers <strong>of</strong> varying abilities to drive their cars at speed and learn this wonderful newand impressive track.<strong>July</strong>-<strong>August</strong> <strong>2002</strong>Sempre <strong>Ferrari</strong>5


FCALA <strong>2002</strong>Another event also took place at the California Speedway--the Coppa GT competitionfor the <strong>Club</strong>’s highest award. To compete for this award, participants first hadto win a platinum award in the Concours, then pass the rigorous Coppa BellaMacchina test. Both <strong>of</strong> these events focus on the car--the originality <strong>of</strong> the car andthe operability <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> its parts. The Coppa GT competition tests the driving abilities<strong>of</strong> the driver/ owner. The <strong>Club</strong> uses independent evaluators (in this case, SCCAracer/instructors who are not FCA members) to judge the abilities <strong>of</strong> the drivers pursuantto the guidelines established by the <strong>Club</strong>. The winners <strong>of</strong> this award don’tneed to be racers, but they do need to display competence and the ability to drivetheir particular <strong>Ferrari</strong> well at a brisk pace. This year, Peter McCoy won the covetedCoppa GT award, driving a 1965 275 GTS.To cap <strong>of</strong>f the day, we all returned to the hotel for the awards banquet with a575M sitting center stage. We had our annual meeting and special presentationswere made to Dick Merritt, a founder <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Club</strong>, and Doug Freedman, past president<strong>of</strong> the club. The 2003 Annual Meet Chair made a presentation about nextyear’s event which will take place at Sebring, FL the first <strong>of</strong> April. Stuart Robinson,president <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ferrari</strong> North <strong>America</strong>, spoke for a few minutes and the major Concoursawards and the Coppa GT award were presented. The evening festivities were continuedwith people dancing to the live band.The event continued on Sunday with another day at the track and members beginningthe trek home.It was definitely a successful event with a heavy participation by California membersand a lot <strong>of</strong> neat <strong>Ferrari</strong>s. Many thanks to a superb event committee and workers!!!!!I’m not even going to try to name everyone, but the executive committee includedMarv Landon, Bill Inglis, Wally Clark, Tom Brockmiller and Marshall Leib. The Worst 100 Point Concours Restored<strong>Ferrari</strong> 365 GTB4 in the WorldArticle and Photos by Shin TakeiA deviation <strong>of</strong> upto 30 minus pointsis possible forwhat is describedas a “perfect” car.This was one <strong>of</strong>those cars.The face <strong>of</strong> a very unhappy and lopsided <strong>Ferrari</strong>. Poor fitting windshield mouldings <strong>of</strong>fer a hint <strong>of</strong> theproblems beneath the surface <strong>of</strong> the shiny paint.24No, its not mine. During the early nineties althoughthe bubble had already burst, some collectors and enthusiastswere still chasing their dreams to own a classic car.Some had been educated the hard way by buying carsthat were represented as Concours Restored or perfect 100point cars only to find that they were far from being complete.Those <strong>of</strong> us who have restored cars know painfullywell that to complete a 100 point restoration, the last 10points cost as much as the 90 points before that. I haveseen many cars purported to be 100 points but in realitynever more than 90. Somehow the restorer/s decided toskip the last 10 points, so in essence when viewed from 25feet away it looks like 100 points but you have to deduct apoint every feet you got close. No group <strong>of</strong> car enthusiastsin the world got reamed more than the Japanese duringthe late eighties and early nineties. I know so, becauseI saw plenty <strong>of</strong> what they were buying. They were delicioustargets for tricky car brokers because they lacked theknow-how to properly assess the degree <strong>of</strong> restorationand authenticity <strong>of</strong> a given model.This tragedy is one <strong>of</strong> those stories but a particularlydistressing one because it started out as a dream andpromise and ended with no one being happy, especiallythe end buyer. I was contacted by one <strong>of</strong> my clients whorepresented a buyer in Japan. He came over to LosAngeles in search <strong>of</strong> a Daytona and wanted to buy minebut because it was not for sale we went and looked at afew in town. None were in the condition the customerdesired and my client purchased a different car for a differentcustomer and went home telling me to keep my eyesopen if one came up for sale. After a few weeks, I got acall from my client who informed me he found a 100 pointConcours Restored Daytona in Italy. Because it was insuch spectacular shape it was being <strong>of</strong>fered at $170K USD,quite high even for that time. The car was being representedby a broker who he did business with before andwasn’t Italian. I suggested that he get on a plane and golook at it because the seller’s 100 point may not be thesame as his 100 point criteria. I told him in my experienceI have seen a deviation <strong>of</strong> up to minus 30 points in somecases. Then he said the famous last words, “I trust him,and he described it as perfect, with no flaws.” I still insistedthat it was well worth his time to go look at it and left itat that. Now we fast-forward two months when my clientcalled me frantically on the phone.He told me the car arrived from Italy and it wasn’twhat it was represented to be. Moreover, his contact disappearedand no one knew where he went. He couldn’tshow his customer the car because it was so bad. I toldhim that at least the car arrived so it can’t be a total lossbut that didn’t help his disappointment. Since he couldn’tsend the car back, he wanted to send it to us to make itinto a 100 point car. At the time, I was in that business sodollar signs started to float in my mind. I’m glad Irefrained from telling him “I told you so.” He didn’t wantto go into details <strong>of</strong> what he thought was wrong and toldme I’ll be able to tell when I see it. We fast forward anothertwo months and the Daytona finally arrived here on aboat, cleared customs, posted the required bond for temporaryentry and came on a flat-bed to Modena Sport Carswhere I was in charge <strong>of</strong> restorations. As most <strong>of</strong> youknow Modena Sportcars was co-owned by Bruno Borriand Luciano Fabbio. The two became famous by beingthe team mechanics for owners Jim McRoberts and BillNicholas and manager Otto Zipper. Together with JohnMorton and Tony Adamowicz they went on to not only


win their class at the 1979 Daytona 24Hr Race but placesecond overall. So Daytonas were a regular at their shop.The car looked good while sitting on top <strong>of</strong> the truck from50 feet away. But as soon as the car was unloaded and wetook a closer look things just didn’t add up.Viewed from the front and rear, the car looked like itwas hunched over to the left, sort <strong>of</strong> like in a cartoon whena car is cornering fast on a right hand sweeper. The leftrear wheel was flush with the fender lip while the rightrear wheel was inset more than an inch. The right rearwheel arch was 2 inches higher than the left rear wheelarch. The entire greenhouse was pushed to the driver’sside. From this, we concluded the car had a major accidentthat could have ended in wrapping itself around atree or a power pole on the driver’s side. To correct thismangled body, the creative artisans in Italy had their workcutout for themselves and creative they were. Forinstance, to fit the new door skin into the slightly smallerdoor frame, they shaved the front leading edge <strong>of</strong> the passengerdoor skin about half an inch. To fit the hood, theyalso cut a sliver from the right top edge near the windshield.The stainless windshield garnish and the drivers A-pillar post were all fitted to suit. The red paint was okaybut not spectacular and the bright work the same. Theengine compartment was painted but very little preparationwas done before painting. We then put the car on ahoist to look at it from below. This is when we discoveredfurther atrocities. The entire bottom <strong>of</strong> the car was coatedin black undercoating so at first look it was okay but onclose inspection we found that it was there to cover rust.In fact, we poked some frame members with a screwdriverand it went right through. So much so that from that holewe could stick our finger in as the metal crumbled to theground. We then scraped the area and found that theydidn’t even bother to remove dirt or grease before sprayingit, so large amounts <strong>of</strong> coated gunk just fell <strong>of</strong>f.Overall, without the peculiarities in the body-work thecar looked funny and gave an impression that somethingwas not quite right. The interior was also not up to snuffand had a musty smell and not the characteristic scent <strong>of</strong> amixture <strong>of</strong> leather and gasoline. It was a restoration allright but a quick and dirty one.During the test drive, we found that although theengine sounded healthy, it wasn’t tuned right and a lotwas to be desired. Since we didn’t know what was rebuiltand what was just covered up, a complete tear down wasin order. It also exhibited unusually bad under-steer andupon closer inspection we noticed that the rear sway barwas broken, i.e., the horizontal section had broken orsnapped <strong>of</strong>f and was missing. They did not bother toremove the vertical section left bolted on or replace it witha new one.First the engine was removed and taken apart. At thispoint there was no stopping Bruno because this was hisfavorite job he did not stop until the engine was completelyrebuilt to his spec. During this time he smoked hisfavorite cigarettes and would discuss politics, soccer,Formula One, and where to get good Italian food, all thewhile the parts were being disassembled. It should benoted that Bruno takes no notes or any means <strong>of</strong> identifyingany parts that come <strong>of</strong>f the engine or in any order. Allparts including nuts, bolts, washers and bearings arethrown into several buckets at random and taken into theparts cleaning vat. There it would sit for several days degunkingand cleansed <strong>of</strong> any dirt or debris.or sludge.Luciano and Gustavo Lara, the mechanic proceeded totake apart the rest <strong>of</strong> the car. The entire engine compartmentwas bare as brakes, radiators fuel and oil lines weretaken apart. All the exterior trim, bumpers, lights, rubber,the interior, the seats, the instrument panel and headlinerwere removed. Every surface that was uncovered exhibitedrust and sloppy cover up <strong>of</strong> a cheap fix. We wereastonished to find Italian newspaper stuffed between panelsholding things in place, no kidding.When the engine parts were cleaned, Bruno andLuciano carefully laid it out on the counter and on severalcarts. The carburetors on one cart, the piston, rings androds on one cart, the cam shaft and crank shaft on another.Then they would call me over and the inspectionwould begin. Bruno would point out a fault, then Lucianowould point out another and so it goes on with a few argumentsin between always in Italian. What it boiled downto was that no matter what, it was going to cost my clientsbig bucks. Then it was the body shop to do their turn <strong>of</strong><strong>July</strong>-<strong>August</strong> <strong>2002</strong>The Daytona’s left and right sides <strong>of</strong> the body were not very symetrical when we received the car.Note the vast difference <strong>of</strong> rear fender wheel well openings relationship with each wheel/tireassembly.Overall fit and finish were poor.Sempre <strong>Ferrari</strong>25


The Worst Daytona continuedcosting out the damage. Just repairing the body to makeit straight was staggering but stripping and repaintingagain was even more. So after the interior was priced out,I had the unpleasant job <strong>of</strong> sending the estimate to myclient. Of course we could not give them a firm estimate,not even a ball park or the time frame. But we made surethat we got paid first before we started the work. This wayItalian newspapers and rags stuffed in the inner fender panelis a less than desirable way to add structural rigidity to a carbody.we could stay ahead and ask them to wire us more whenwe ran out. No one seemed confident to do the bodyworkso Bruno contacted his friend in Phoenix, Arizona wh<strong>of</strong>lew over and inspected the car.Soon thereafter, the stripped body shell was picked upby a transporter and it was on its way to Phoenix. I visitedthe body shop every other month to check on the progressbut it was slow and tedious as frame members that wererusted had to be cut out, fabricated and welded backbefore the body was repaired.The engine was the first thing completed as Bruno toreit apart and rebuilt it in two weeks, during which time healso repaired other customer’s cars. The rest <strong>of</strong> the componentssuch as the transaxle, suspension, brake system,cooling system, fuel system were all re-restored as well asthe wiring and hoses. But we didn’t make it in one yearand we applied for an extension for the temporary permitfor another year. We got the body back and piece by piecethe Daytona was put back together. I always enjoyedwatching the moment when the engine was put back inwhen all hands were needed to position the motor exactlyso that while on a hoist, nothing would come in contactwith the surroundings. Finally, the day that the engine wasready to start arrived, and as usual, it started on one tryand screamed to a high pitch as Bruno fine-tuned it andwas proud that no smoke was visible. After that, the rest <strong>of</strong>the parts including the interior was installed and it wastime to go for a test ride. The car now accelerated smoothlyand had no handling quirks. The brakes were as good ason any Daytona and it smelled right with just the rightamount <strong>of</strong> essence <strong>of</strong> gasoline to make you even higher.The sorry Daytona had been reborn into a beautiful stallion,one that any owner would be proud <strong>of</strong>. By this timealmost two years had past since we received the car andthe Daytona would have to leave the country or be confiscated.We made arrangements and after we were paid infull, the newly restored Daytona left us on a transporter fora boat to Japan. I remember looking at it on the flatbedand noticed the difference from whence it was broughtover. No, it was not a Pebble Beach restoration, but a realgood one. SF26
