PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEDear FCA Members:When this Sempre Magazine arrives, the 2007 election will be over and the new Board of Directors willbe formed. From this Board, and per our By-laws, the Election Committee will put forth their recommendationfor the new Regional Officers, which requires a vote of approval from the new Board. The Officerspositions are President, Vice-President, and Secretary. The new Board will start with this very importanttask. With the approval of the Officers my two year term as President will come to an end and I will moveon to the position of Chairman of the Board. It is my opinion that this is essentially an honorary role withmy vote being cast only in the case of a deadlocked tie vote by the Board – should that ever happen. It has been an honor, as well as a terrific experience, to serve as your President and Regional Director.I have been supported by an outstanding group of Officers and Board of Directors. Together, as a team, wehave attempted, and I believe succeeded in pushing our organization yet further ahead in providing the services, and events to be enjoyed by all. I strongly encourage our membership to become more involved in themonthly meetings, develop your own position in the group, and run for office as a Board Member. OurDirectors and Officers are diverse with varying skill sets and personalities. They have created a dynamicenvironment from which our organization has prospered. In short, we have had fun in the development ofour growth.I would like to thank my fellow officers Carlos Amato (Vice-President), Doug Prestine (Secretary),Demetri Zafaris (Treasurer), the Board of Directors and Chairpersons who served in 2005, 2006, and 2007.Also, my thanks to all the Regional Members who participated in our monthly meetings and contributed tothe accomplishments during my Presidency. As I reflect on the past two years some achievements that standout in my mind are:• The drafting, development and adoption of our Regional By-Laws.• The creation of the Area Coordinator program.• The re-birth of the Giant Sequoia “Mad Dash.”• The Gourmet Ride and Drives.• The ongoing refinement of our Sempre Magazine and web site.• Our first annual FCA/CHP 11-99 Foundation Golf Tournament. These are but a few of the achievements that many of you have worked on so diligently to create, andmaintain the quality of this organization that I have become so proud of.Since I started attending the Board meetings in the last decade I have gained life-long friendships, manygood memories of ride and drives, and a great sense of accomplishment. Serving as President is a trulyrewarding experience that I would recommend to my fellow Ferrari enthusiasts. In the future, I hope to see many new faces participate in the meetings who develop into the nextgeneration of Directors and Officers.Once again, thank you for allowing me the pleasure of serving you!7/8 20073Sempre FerrariSee you on the road or autostrade!Walter B. 8FORMULA ONE VIEWINGMONACO GRAND PRIX AT FERRARIArticle ByOF NEWPORT BEACH Tom Brockmillerand Wally ClarkOnSunday, May 27th we were the guests of Ferrari ofNewport Beach where we enjoyed their beautiful newFerrari & Maserati showroom and watched the MonacoGrand Prix. While all F1 racing is exciting, this particular venueoffers challenges beyond the norm with its tight streetcircuit. The first three grid starters finished in the sameorder as they started, rather typical for this race. They wereAlonso, Hamilton and Massa, in that order with twoMcLarens and our beloved Ferrari as the podium finishers. Our gracious host, Bill Story, along with service managerAlan Woodard and Classiche manager John Amettewere in attendance, as well as over 60 of our own membership.Ferraris adorned the entire front parking lot from a fewvintage to the newest 599 GTB’s. Amanda Thompson, marketing and retail director, offered a 10% discount onFerrari regalia with good success. Our special thanks to herfor being our liaison with the dealership. It so happens shehad just retuned from her honeymoon. We congratulatethe Thompsons. Many members participated in the offer to have ademonstration drive in the newest Maserati QuattroporteAutomatica. 10TAPRIL 22, 2007EARTH DAY DRIVE TO OJAIArticle ByTino MingoriPhotos ByParticipantshe Ferraris performed beautifully during their spiritedgallop through the valleys and across the hills to Ojai, ourdestination for the day. Ferrari windshield wipers are rarelyused, but on this day they did turn out to be rather handy. The event was advertised as the first ever Green Ferraridriving event. In keeping with this theme our excursionresembled a wet season drive arranged by the Ferrari Clubof Ireland. We had mist, cool weather and some light rain.Nevertheless, our hearty group of participants seemed toenjoy themselves as Ferrari drivers generally do.After negotiating almost 170 miles of beautiful andchallenging back roads, we arrived at the lovely RanchHouse Restaurant on the outskirts of Ojai. People foundtheir way to the inviting entrance, and it was time to relaxto enjoy the company of the other drivers and passengers. The conversation at our table began to flow, but inevitablythe following question had to be asked, “Can you tell usonce again about the miles of sun drenched roads that werescheduled for this event?” Actually, some of our pre-drivehyperbole did refer to beautiful sunlight, gorgeous vistasand miles of trouble free driving. So much for truth inadvertising. In our defense it would have to be said thatthere were numerous gorgeous vistas and also many miles ofexciting trouble free driving. It was mainly in the sunlightdepartment where we fell a bit short.Continued page 12Event Co-ChairsBob Boas and Tino MingoriEntrance to the Ranch House Restaurant.

12In addition to the much needed mist and rain, severalother green features were included as part of this FCACelebration of Earth Day. Each participant received aCompact Fluorescent Light bulb (CFL) that uses about 1/4of the power of an incandescent bulb. Also, a small portionof each participants entry fee was donated to theCarbonFund (www.carbonfund.org), an organization thatdeals in carbon offsets. In this way the CO2 generated by30 Ferraris motoring through the countryside was offset bycontributions to support renewable energy sources (wind, solar) and biomass digestion (don’t ask). The green themewas rounded out by the presentation of a few prizes such asEnzo Ferrari’s personal copy of the Sierra Club Newsletter,a solar green turtle, a container of Simple Green, and aspray can of green automotive paint (guaranteed to makeyour Ferrari Green). The brunch at the Ranch House must be singled outfor special praise. We were allowed to select from amongseven tempting entrees, and the staff worked very hard tomake us feel welcome. After a relaxing hour or two at theRanch House, people were ready for a leisurely drive home. The issue of how much work would be required to clean upthe cars could be put aside until another day. 14SREGULAR SERVICE INTERVALSMAINTAINING YOUR FERRARIArticle and Photo ByMarshall Bucko you’ve just purchased a new Enzo, or a nice used 355and you’ve been told that the annual maintenance (or every5000 miles) is $2,000, and includes engine and transmissionoil, cooling system, clutch and brake fluid flush andreplace, and appropriate filters. Since you have threeFerraris you figure that you’ll only drive the car 1000 milesa year, so you can just defer that service for a few years.Wrong–that could be a mistake.I discussed the issue of low mileage Ferraris and maintenancewith Alan Woodard and John Amette of OrangeCounty Ferrari, Graziano Negroni and Jerry Hicks ofBeverly Hills Ferrari, Chuck Houck of the Auto Gallery, and independent Carl Steuer of Blackhorse Motors, andthere is general consensus that there are excellent reasonsfor regular service intervals, with differing opinions basedon individual experience. It is a fact that disuse is not good for a car, as impressiveas a low teen mileage number may seem on the counterat auction. Ferraris are meant to be driven, and if neglectedthere are a variety of issues which arise, in the worst case aused car syndrome Houck called “lot rot.” Gas goes bad, oilseals leak, shocks freeze up, tires deteriorate from ozone, and you aren’t having as much fun as you should. There are several issues: first normal usage causes hotair to exit, and colder air to enter the open cavities of theengine and transmission, which adds moisture to the internals.Moisture combines with metals to cause corrosion, especially of the car isn’t fully warmed up during use.The hydraulic fluid in the clutch and braking systemsis hydrophilic, that is it attracts and holds water. This waterlowers the boiling point of the fluid, and causes corrosion. Thus, brake (and clutch) fluid should be renewed at leastevery 18 to 24 months, or just before a track event, wherebrakes will be used hard. The coolant in the radiator is a mixture of antifreezeand water. If it is tap water it contains minerals which canprecipitate corrosion, after the anti freeze has lost its anticorrosioncomponents due to age. Alan suggested that for alow usage collector car, a mix of distilled water and antifreeze could be left in place for two to four years withoutworry. Normally, every 12 to 24 months is adequate. The last point is the benefits of having an experiencedmechanic check your Ferrari over top to bottom regularlyfor other issues which, if uncorrected, could cause expensiveproblems down the road.It is important to find a dealer or shop that you trust.Never take your Ferrari to a SleeZ Lube or a Gyppi Lube –there was a sad case of one of those outfits mistaking thetransaxle drain plug on a Dino 246 for the engine drain, draining the transaxle, then over filling the engine – resultingin a failed trans.Your Ferrari can reward you with high performanceand satisfying reliability, but only if it is treated to theexpert care and fresh fluids it needs to cool and lubricate itproperly. The best advice I can offer is to drive that PrancingHorse often and hard (after it’s fully warmed up) – and theFerrari Club offers great opportunities to do that in thecompany of fellow enthusiasts. By 10 A.M. the rain tapered off andwe started what would become a great day and event. Our Corona Airport event had a beautiful sunny daycombined with a 30 to 40 miles per hour cross-windcoming over the runway. Only 3 or 4 of the heavier planeswould chance a take-off or landing. A beautifully restoredPiper Cub took off, managing to stay right side up, but wenever saw him again. He must have had a destination witha runway sans cross-wind.As in the past three Corona events, we were hosted byFCA’ers Fred Peters and Charles Betz. Over 45 Ferrarisshowed up, including several ’50s classics and racing roadsters.Almost every model from the 1950’s to the currentFerrari offerings were on display in the special parking areanext to the runway. Thedrive was escorted by the CHP this year so there were nospeeding tickets issued to participants who all displayed adecorative event applique. The weather was sunny and cooldriving up the coast and all cars arrived at the Bacara Resortin record time for a cocktail party hosted by sponsors EffinVodka and Ballz energy drinks. This combination of sponsorsresulted in the concoction of the day, appropriatelydubbed “Effin Ballz” and yes; it was necessary to have atleast two.Drinks and conversation flowed as people browsedtables filled with sports and Hollywood memorabilia itemsdonated for silent auction by Gallery of Dreams and a shopfull of automobile collectibles brought by Ultimate Toyz.A few notable offerings were a Michael Schumacher autographedhelmet, a brake rotor and caliper assembly fromMichael’s 1999 winning F1 car and a collage of signedphotos by the 2006 F1 driver roster. Later, participantswere treated to a delicious gourmet lunch served by theresort, elegantly presented with white tablecloths and linenson a grassy plateau overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Most of the cars participating were late model V8Ferraris with two new 599’s leading the pack; one drivenby Justin himself, followed by comedian Chris Tucker whowas taking his new stallion on its inaugural run.Accompanying the 60+ Ferraris was a group of tenLamborghinis, four Maserati Spyders, two Carrera GTsand one original 289 Cobra. Of course all this was for agood cause as 100% of the proceeds generated by theentrance fees were donated to the Santa Barbara PoliceActivities League, the Our House grief counseling centerand Dusty Troyan’s Motor 4 Toys. The turn out for this year’s Friedman Memorialindicates that interest in this kind high profile charity eventis gaining popularity with the exotic car community. Iapplaud Justin Friedman in his efforts to expand the qualityand diversity of this event and anticipate it will be biggerand better next year, so mark the date on your calendar andsign up early when June comes around in 2008.
