(2) Ideal practicesParticipants <strong>in</strong>dicated that <strong>the</strong> ideal would be a service that pays attention to who an <strong>in</strong>dividual is<strong>and</strong> does not make generalizations about <strong>the</strong> person’s culture. The focus should be on what <strong>the</strong>ymay need as <strong>in</strong>dividuals while tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to account possible cultural <strong>and</strong> contextual impacts on <strong>the</strong>person. Also, not surpris<strong>in</strong>gly, language-specific services were identified, along with a multil<strong>in</strong>gualcrisis l<strong>in</strong>e, as well as services that are flexible, with extended hours <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g even<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong>weekends. This would accommodate <strong>the</strong> needs of various types of families as well as vary<strong>in</strong>gwork schedules.20Most of <strong>the</strong> focus groups spoke about want<strong>in</strong>g services that reflect a holistic perspective, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>ga variety of services <strong>in</strong> one location. This <strong>in</strong>cluded programs that conta<strong>in</strong> a social aspect (e.g.,21<strong>Improv<strong>in</strong>g</strong> mental health services <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jane</strong> <strong>and</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ch communitygarden<strong>in</strong>g, sew<strong>in</strong>g) <strong>and</strong> pay attention to <strong>in</strong>dividual needs, as highlighted earlier. Examples of<strong>in</strong>tegrated or “holistic” services <strong>in</strong>cluded home care for elderly family members experienc<strong>in</strong>g bothphysical <strong>and</strong> mental health issues; service providers treat<strong>in</strong>g clients based on <strong>the</strong>ir cultural values<strong>and</strong> beliefs; <strong>and</strong> language-specific <strong>and</strong> culturally specific educational workshops regard<strong>in</strong>g mentalhealth <strong>and</strong> mental health services.Lastly, participants from each of <strong>the</strong> focus groups <strong>in</strong>dicated that <strong>the</strong>ir ideal service would not have<strong>the</strong> current exist<strong>in</strong>g time limits per appo<strong>in</strong>tment with a service provider, enabl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m more time<strong>and</strong> freedom to discuss <strong>the</strong>ir problems.Service provider focus groupsThe f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs from <strong>the</strong> focus group with mental health service providers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community confirmedmuch of what emerged from <strong>the</strong> community focus groups, <strong>and</strong> also po<strong>in</strong>ted to several o<strong>the</strong>r keyissues related to mental health service provision <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jane</strong> <strong>and</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ch community.Staff resourcesService providers reported a shortage of staff with specialized tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> mental health <strong>and</strong>addictions serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jane</strong> <strong>and</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ch community.
