Leadership.....Incoming Officer training is almost over for another year but still plentyon offer from your leadership team.We now have a good team of Lions from our District trained to take yourclub through the Club Excellence Process. The big comment coming through our discussion during the trainingwas simply that Lions do not know what they do not know. How long since your club asked members how they would like theirclub to be run? Have you ever surveyed your community to see what their needsreally are? The Club Excellence Process will help you do all this. Contrary to what is a popular misconception it is not just somethingthat LCI wants us to do. It is a very well thought out Process that wasdeveloped by a team of senior Lions from around the world includingsome from New Zealand. Please consider asking for our well trained facilitators to come, present the Process, and help your club become the best it possiblycan be. Contact either 2 nd Vice District Governor elect (Graham Edge) or meand we will organize this for you.We are planning very informal follow up meetings for Presidents and 1 stVPs to give them the opportunity to discuss how things are going forthem as the year progresses.Raeowna RushDistrict GLT CoordinatorP A G E 4 J - T I M E S , J U N E 2 0 1 2

Berwick Camp Redevelopment Project.....In May 2010 the south end ofthe Otago Youth AdventureCamp at Berwick wasdestroyed when tons of earthbehind it slid down the hill followingprolonged rainfall. The damagedsection has been rebuilt under theTrust’s insurance cover, but theyare not permitted to use the newrooms until further work is done. The local Clutha Council has ruledthat stabilisation work must befinished before they will fully sign itoff. The Camp is being used againbut many groups are having to taketents to make up the requirednumber of beds. If the new roomsare used, the Trust is liable for afine of $200,000 and on-going fineson a daily basis. As you wouldimagine the Trust’s financialreserves have already taken ahiding.Local Lions have joined togetherwith their fellow Rotary Clubs to tryand raise capital to get the BerwickCamp up to scratch as quickly aspossible. The two organisationshave worked together since theCamp was first opened back in the1980’s. The well supportedBerwick Experience, run by theTaieri Lions Club, is only one of themany that regularly use thefacilities. At the beginning of February letterswere posted out to clubs, schoolsand companies, who have a link tothe Camp, asking for assistance. The response has been rapid with anumber of groups replying straightaway. Some have given financialassistance, some have donatedgoods which can be used by thecamp, and others have promised toearmark upcoming projects to thecause. The joint Committee is hoping toraise in excess of $100,000 to allowthe camp to be brought up to thestandard expected today. Once thestabilisation work is completed it isnecessary to bring the sprinklersystem that runs through thebuildings up to the same standardas that which has had to be fitted tothe ‘new end’. Once that is done, itwill be necessary to put waterstorage in place that will give thesystem forty five minutes worth ofwater. This is not possible with thecurrent tanks.P A G E 16 J - T I M E S , J U N E 2 0 1 2

Multiple District Convention Seminars.....In my role as webmaster for District 202J, I attended two seminars heldprior to the MD convention in New Plymouth on Friday, 26 April.Webmasters from four districts were present with Iain and AmandaMorrison who prepare New Zealand Lions publicity material, including “TheLion” magazine. The first was concerning social media and how young people communicate.Of course Facebook and Twitter were mentioned as well as texting, grouptexts, podcasts, and other media. Concepts and ideas were discussed withoutoffering definitive solutions, but the consensus was that these methods ofcommunication need to be adopted by clubs especially where young peopleare concerned. The immediacy of these methods was acknowledged. The second provided details of the new New Zealand Lions website and wasled by Rex Bullard, a Lion from Stokes Valley in Lower Hutt who is thewebmaster. It seems they’ve got it right this time! Each club has its ownpages within this website which will supersede what LCI was providingthrough its “e -Clubhouse”. Rex listed the four objectives of the NZ Lionswebsite: Public awareness of New Zealand Lions; Attract members; Administration of districts and clubs; and Storage of information. All clubs are expected to set up and maintain their club’s pages and providearticles and photos about projects and activities. The site is straightforward touse and should not present any difficulties. Each club should appoint awebmaster who could also be the bulletin editor or maybe the secretary orideally a member with a particular interest or skill in the area of IT. It’s amatter of making the effort to investigate how it’s done and taking it from there! As district webmaster, I will be contacting every club by e-mail around the endof this Lions year for the name of your club’s webmaster or your club couldadvise me by e-mail. I am also available for assistance. I will try to haveBalmacewen’s pages underway as examples.P A G E 18 J - T I M E S , J U N E 2 0 1 2

V O L U M E 2 9 , I S S U E 1 1 P A G E 19It’s also a good idea to set up a Facebook page for your club. A member whois on Facebook can easily set up a page for your club. Search Facebook for“Balmacewen Lions” to see what that club has done on Facebook.I appreciate the assistance of District 202J Cabinet to attend these seminars.Russell Hancox, District 202J WebmasterWebinars (Web Based Training Seminars).....LCI offers training and information webinars on the www.lionsclubs.orgwebsite. If you are an incoming or an existing board member then theseare of interest to you.The secretaries & treasurers sessions have now ended, however you canaccess the webinar information for those sessions from the website at:www.lionsclubs.org/EN/member-center/leadership-development/developmentprograms/webinars.php(go to: LCI website, Member Centre, LeadershipDevelopment, Development Programs, Webinars).Do the suggested tutorial to become familiar with a webinar - and then registerfor the a webinar.During June there is a webinar on “Club Officers - Teamwork”. This covershow club officers can work together to plan for the year, set goals, communicate, cooperate, manage committees or projects, and achieve clubexcellenceThe times/dates given are US times/dates but if you click on a session datethen you can convert to NZ time (select Auckland/Wellington in the drop downmenu) Wednesday 6 June US time becomes 12 noon - 1pm on Thursday 7 June Tuesday 12 June US time becomes 3 - 4am on Wednesday 13 June Friday 15 June US time becomes 12 noon - 1pm on Saturday 16 JuneThis is a good opportunity to gain & share information/ideas/problems withLions from around the world.

MRI Scanner Appeal Successful.....Ahuge thank you to allmembers in zone 2 & 3– you have helped make thisappeal one of the best fundraisers onrecord. Many members put incountless hours to ensure money wasraised. The dedication andcommitment by Lions Wendy Scottand Gerald Paterson ensured thephone-a-thon was conducted in aprofessional and timely manner. Thanks is also due to Lion GavinSomerville for organizing publicity, and to Gill Underdown who has spentcountless hours since thephone-a-thon ensuring receipts areissued for all donations. It is an extremely satisfying resultconsidering I doubted we could reachour target of 10% when firstapproached – how wrong can one be!Once the LCIF money is received we’llhave exceeded half a million dollarsraised – that’s closer to 20%.Although a large proportion came fromthe phone-a-thon and street appeal inWaimate, clubs have also madesubstantial contributions of hardearned dollars from various events.Over $50,000 raised by Fairlie Lions inone night was an example of thegenerosity and support that came fromthe wider community. The target of $2.8 has been exceededbut the extra dollars will stay in thetrust account to purchase any furtherequipment needed, or go towardsreplacement when the time comes.Being part of this community projecthas put Lions in the forefront –publicity on a weekly basis over sixweeks has been all positive for ourorganization. Financial support fromLloyd Morgan Lions Clubs CharitableTrust and Lions Clubs InternationalFoundation is also appreciated. V O L U M E 2 9 , I S S U E 1 1 P A G E 21(newly formed)s NZ is going to change to digital TV there will be many old TV aerialsA being removed from homes, hotels, and motels. Our plan is to mount a massive non‐ferrous scrap metal drive NZ wide. Most households have old taps, bits of copper piping, lead waste pipes, old round BBQ’s and old aluminium lawnmowers as well as TV aerials.Lions clubs would need to organise a local collection point and set date so thatall the metal would arrive from say 3 pm Friday to 3 pm Saturday or whateversuits your club. This would be beneficial especially for security issues. It wouldbe ideal to have a large car trailer or a truck for each metal type so it can besorted as collected. These collec on vehicles would need to be securelyparked overnight. This sorting would give a better result and a smootheroperation when you sell it at your local scrap metal dealer. It would be best tonegotiate best prices with them before you start.Lions clubs could then send CMF their total profits or keep half for their ownyouth projects.Donations to be banked into Westpac Bank Account No. 030389‐0760525‐00Email details of your donation to:Old Aerials For Youth.....cmf@lionsclubs.org.nzIf clubs thought they needed help with the project they could include a localschool and give them a percentage of the profits.Time Frame: Proposed as a spring or early summer project before anyoneelse gets the idea bearing in mind the changeover date is: South Island (except West Coast) April 2013.Proposed Project of a Scrap Metal Drivefor the Lions Clubs New Zealand ChildMobility Foundation, and NZ young peopleFor the sake of advertising a Nationwide date would be ideal.FREEVIEW TV might adver se for us nationwide and we are investigating this.Contact District 202J trustee Neil Hanning for further information:hanning@snap.net.nz or 03) 303-7874

In otherwords, every quality that women hate in a man, they love in a cat.One woman’s answer: It’s because cats don’t know any better, but men do.What do you get if you cross a cat with a gorilla? An animal that puts you out at night.Waitaki Girls’High SchoolHostelYr 9-13 GirlsWaitaki Girls’ High Schooloffers you the “Waitaki Way” Respect for self Respect for others Respect for our environmentwww.waitakigirlshigh.school.nzContact Margie Baird, Hostel ManagerP O Box 347, Oamaru 9444mbaird@waitakigirlshigh.school.nzPhone (03) 434 6587Fax (03) 434 6565

Publicity.....Publicity concerning matters relating to 202J District Lions in thepast few weeks has been great, especially during the MayfieldConvention. In both the northern and the southern regions of ourdistrict the local media was bombarded with constant Lions Clubs publicity;in “The Timaru Herald” there were several photos and articles about theSouth Canterbury MRI Scanner Appeal with the Lions Clubs of Timaru Host,Fairlie and Temuka District featuring prominently. Donations of $30,000and $50,000 is simply unbelievable! It was really good to see the Lionsmaking the front page of “The Timaru Herald”.Photos and articles were featured in “The Oamaru Mail”, “The WaitakiHerald” and “The Otago Daily Times” about the annual fishing contest atMoeraki organised by The Lions Club of Waianakarua.Publicity during the 202J Convention at Mayfield was great not only inAshburton area but also during International Director Gudrun and PastInternational Director Jon Bjarni's visit to North Otago. In the south, The Lions Club of Port Chalmers had an article and photopublished in “The Star” newspaper featuring their barn dance. The LionsClub of Dunedin South also had some publicity about their Rail Walk –Taieri Gorge Railway. Both The Lions Club of Methven and The Lions Club of Mayfield and Districtmade the front pages of “The Ashburton Guardian” with their motorbike andbike races respectively. Mayfield had approximately 750 entries andMethven had over 100 motorbikes and about 4000 spectators! Incrediblepublicity for Lions! The organisers deserve a lot of credit and it makes oneproud to be a Lion with such great achievements. My media representatives in the northern (Fern Blake), middle (GeraldPaterson) and southern (John Ware) regions have their contact details inthe District 202J Lions directory. My contact details are also in the directory.(Contact details are also in the Multiple District directory - Editor Beryl)P A G E 28 J - T I M E S , J U N E 2 0 1 2
