Enhanced Recovery Care ProgrammeSimply making your recovery easier, more enjoyable, quicker, and safer.Prior to surgery A positive approach to the operation is important.The surgery and anaesthetic has been considerably refined. Clear information andexplanation, pre-operative physiotherapy and written and video materials are offered.Specialist liquid meals (Pre-op by Nutricia) so that the body is not in a starved stressedstate and a phone call from Mr Lewis the evening prior to surgery will be arranged.Day of Surgery Morning-only joint replacement surgery is scheduled as the recovery issuperior compared to that carried out in the afternoon. Enhanced recoveryanaesthetic, as previously detailed, is administered and a blood recycling system isused so that blood that is lost is given back.In the recovery area, immediate sitting up in bed is encouraged and you may read,talk, have a drink of water, and speak to family by phone if appropriate. You will alsohave a post-operation hip x-ray.The following are not required: a wedge, a drain, an IV drip, an IV pain machine(PCA), skin clips or a transfusion*.On the ward, again sitting up, you may enjoy a cup of tea and some biscuits. Somelight arm and leg exercises can be carried out. Three hours following surgery you willbe helped up and out of bed, and walk 15 metres, placing your full weight throughyour new hip. You will then sit out for your evening meal.For people living close by with someone at home and ground floor sleepingarrangements, you may go home that day - i.e. day case hip replacement.
