2008 <strong>Evergreen</strong> GalaEVERGREEN HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION10 112008 Concours d’EleganceEVERGREEN HEALTHCARE FOUNDATIONBELOW: David Likosky, MD; Daniel Nelson, MD; Matthew Lonergan, MD;Lyle Ronning, DC; and Lawrence Mast, DDS, joined fellow enthusiasts forMorning Rounds, which gave doctors a “first look” at the vintage cars.The Campaign for <strong>Evergreen</strong>The 2008 <strong>Evergreen</strong> Gala raised $1.1 millionto support the expansion of <strong>Evergreen</strong>’scancer services.When the Gala, the premier fundraising event ofthe year, opened its elegant doors on the eveningof March 8, its first goal was to raise funds for atraveling mammography coach to improve healthcare for women in outlying towns.As audience members raised their paddles to donateto this worthy cause, volunteers known as “The PinkLadies” came onstage as a dramatic symbol of howmany mammograms each donation would fund. Theinitial goal of $200,000 was met – and then some.Unbeknownst to the audience, that amount wasthen matched with $200,000 generously gifted by<strong>Evergreen</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong> Commissioner Al DeYoungand his wife, Donna.A special thanks to all the staff, physicians and volunteers who gave tothe Campaign for <strong>Evergreen</strong>, which raised $71,714 in 2008 to support<strong>Evergreen</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong> programs.LEFT: The Cirikli Stilt Birds lent an aura of imaginativeelegance to the 2008 Gala. Even though I was so scared, myfamily and friends made my hospital room my home.Justin had his clothes there, and we made it our ownlittle oasis.”ABOVE: Best of Show was awarded to a 1938 Alfa Romeo 8c2900B Coupe, Touring Berlinetta, owned by Jon Shirley.Over the past six years, the Concours d’Elegance hasraised more than $1 million for uncompensated carefor children.The prestigious event typically draws a crowd of3,000 connoisseurs of restored classic cars, motorcyclesand wooden boats, with guests coming fromas far away as Canada and Europe. The KirklandConcours equally shares its net proceeds with<strong>Evergreen</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> Medical Center and SeattleChildren’s.At <strong>Evergreen</strong>, the event’s beneficiary is Women’s &Children’s Services, home of the renowned FamilyMaternity Center, the second busiest maternity centerin Washington. For high-risk pregnancies,<strong>Evergreen</strong> also offers cutting-edge maternal-fetalmedicine, neonatal intensive care and antepartumcare, along with the latest infertility treatment,digital mammography and women’s health education.For every kind of women’s health concern,<strong>Evergreen</strong> is known for its compassionate, familycenteredcare.A growing highlight of the Concours, the JuniorJudges program, brings together local students toselect a vintage car for the coveted Junior JudgesAward – a great way to inspire the next generationto get involved in volunteering. The 2008 Concoursinaugurated a new feature, Morning Rounds, whichoffered physicians from <strong>Evergreen</strong> and Children’sthe opportunity to buy VIP tickets for a breakfastreception and “first look” at the vintage cars.Jeff Clark, who serves on the <strong>Evergreen</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong>Foundation Board of Trustees, chaired the eventon September 7 at Carillon Point in Kirkland. TheConcours returns to Kirkland on September 13,2009; more information on tickets and sponsorshipscan be found at www.kirklandconcours.com.Women’s & Children’s ServicesWomen’s & Children’s Services is grateful to the Kirkland Concours for its support, which benefits mothers and babieswho need exceptional care before and after delivery. These services are available to everyone regardless of the abilityto pay, thanks in part to the generosity shown at fundraising events such as the Concours.Born early and weighing less than four pounds each,both preemies stayed in the family-centered NeonatalIntensive Care Unit – Maggie for 32 days, and Mylesfor 23 – where Jennie and Justin could stay withthem overnight.“I was so happy to have the option to stay in theNICU,” Jennie says. “Some people told me to go homeand get some rest. But I knew: My healing is here. Weworked so hard for this pregnancy, and I slept betterknowing I could open my eyes anytime and see mybabies with me.”
