While science hasbrought about technological advancesand improved safety practices, theextraordinary experience of childbirthis something that has continued to bondwomen and families in ways that fewother life events can.In recent history, teams of nurses and providersin obstetrics and women’s care have dramaticallyimproved the way providers prioritize patients’preferences and have created a more comfortable, inclusive environment for welcoming babies intothe world. EvergreenHealth was at the forefrontof that movement nearly 30 years ago, pioneeringthe philosophy of family-centered care. Todaythat approach continues to resonate with familiesand their childbirth teams who partner togetherthroughout this incredible journey.04 05

FeaturesOver Dr. Chuck Heffron’s 30-year career as anobstetrician in the Family Maternity Center, he,with a group of dedicated doctors and nurses, partnered with the organization to makebold, patient-focused changes that inspiredthe philosophy of family-centered care thatis embraced by many today. In retirement,he continues to advise the organization as itcontinually seeks to improve the patient andfamily experience in childbirth and beyond.PICTURED At LEFT: Charles Heffron, MD“After attention to safety, our role canbe to help make the experience ofchildbirth as personalized andpatient-centered as possible.”Last August, when Blaire Henebry’s delivery day arrived, she was determined to have the natural childbirth sheand Dr. Wells had discussed. But standing at just a hairover 5 feet tall, she knew her birth plan might not goas she had hoped.“My labor was long and rocky, but I knew I was in goodhands the entire time,” Blaire recalls.Blaire says of the moments, and then days, followingher son’s birth. And Blaire hasn’t left the EvergreenHealth family, either. She is one of thousands of moms who participatein parent-baby educational classes that help familiesnavigate the new discoveries of parenting, together.“I like to tell women that they are every bit as goodas the millions of women who have come before them,”Dr. Heffron explains. “The goal is simply the bestexperience and outcomes for mom and baby. Our roleis to help ensure the safest and best possible experienceof childbirth and as personalized and patient-centeredas possible.”When Blaire Henebry discovered she was pregnant, shecalled her sister in Montana for advice on the importantnext steps she would take in planning to have a baby. Her sister, having connections in the Northwest, referred Blaire to the Center for Women’s Health atEvergreenHealth, which happened to be just 10 minutesfrom Blaire’s Redmond home.Blaire chose Dr. Karen Wells, the center’s medical director,as her obstetrician, and Dr. Wells immediately put Blaire’sanxious nerves at ease.“I was paranoid abouteverything,” Blaire remembers.“But Dr. Wells really set mymind at ease, and helped mefeel in control and educatedabout what to expect.”“I was particularly intriguedby the notion ofmoms and babiesnot having to changeenvironments.”That feeling of comfort andconfidence was central to theexperience Dr. Chuck Heffron envisioned for maternitypatients back in the early 1980s, when he along witha team of doctors, nurses, staff and dedicated volunteersspearheaded the family-centered care philosophy thatis embraced by so many today.“We had a real opportunity to take a more progressiveapproach to how we partnered with and cared for ourpatients and to maximize the childbirth experience, but it had to be genuine and accepted by everyone acrossthe department,” Dr. Heffron says. The team started by looking at every aspect of theexperience from a patient-and-family perspective, keepingthe patient’s and family’s choices and comfort at thecenter of every decision.“I was particularly intrigued by the notion of momsand babies not having to change environments,”Dr. Heffron says. And, before any other hospital was doing it,EvergreenHealth introduced single labor, delivery andrecovery birthing suites and eliminatedits well-born nursery. Along with thosechanges, the hospital also did awaywith visiting hours and prescheduledfeeding times for newborns.“Our goal was to eliminate hospitalinconveniences and maximize the timefamilies spent together in a settingwhere we could provide them with thetools and techniques to educate new parents and helpgive them confidence,” Dr. Heffron adds. The family-centered approach quickly became thestandard of care adopted by the Family Maternity Center, balancing absolute patient safety with an individualizedpatient experience.“From the inception of a family centered pregnancy andbirth center, we—the entire staff—all understood howenriching the experience can be when family membersare included,” Dr. Wells comments. She labored for 31 hours while her husband’s and herextended families waited anxiously in the family supportareas for nearly two days.“The birth of a baby is one of the most intimate ‘familyaffairs,’” Dr. Wells adds. “The inclusion of spouses, siblings, grandparents and other family and close friends startswith joyously announcing the pregnancy, continues withemotional and physical support along the way and buildstoward the awesome experience of a birth. It’s importantto us to support our patients and families at each of thosesignificant steps along the way.”“The entire team was so accommodating, and really helpedus stay focused on meeting our new baby,” Blaire says. After two grueling days of labor, Blaire and Tyler Henebry’sson Graham was delivered by C-section on August 20, 2012.For many moms like Blaire,EvergreenHealth’s family-centeredapproach remains paramount to thechildbirth experience. When naturalchildbirth isn’t an option, providersstrive to emulate the naturalexperience at a C-section delivery, providing moms with skin-to-skintime—an important part of motherbabybonding—in the operatingroom just after the baby is born.“From the moment Graham wasborn, he didn’t leave our side,”LEARN MOREIS YOUR FAMILY EXPECTING?The EvergreenHealth Nurse Navigator & Healthline can refer you toour network of providers who specialize in childbirth services. Featurespictured above: Tricia Fanning, ReNTON,and Natalie Delorey, duvallHolding your baby or breastfeeding for the first timeis a precious moment that many moms relate to, butwhen your child is receiving care in the NeonatalIntensive Care Unit (NICU), those events can be evenmore meaningful. The moms ofEvergreenHealth’sNICU ParentAdvisory Groupunderstand firsthand those specialmilestones and use their experienceto support families with babiescurrently receiving neonatal intensive care.“It can be such an isolating experience,” says TriciaFanning of Renton, whose son Jack, born at 27 1/2weeks, spent 159 days in the EvergreenHealth NICUbefore he was big enough to go home with his family.“Having someone you can lean on, who understandswhat you’re going through, makes a big difference.”Duvall mom Natalie Delorey shared a similar feelingwhen her son Andrew was born prematurely. Like Jack,Andrew was born at 27 weeks, weighing less than3 pounds.“It’s really hard to say, ‘I couldn’t hold my baby today,’”she explains.Andrew spent 95 days in the NICU while doctorsworked to treat the deficiencies resulting fromhis early birth.“The reason our babies are healthy today is becauseof the EvergreenHealth NICU,” Tricia says. “We wereso thankful and wanted to find a way to support otherfamilies and give back to Evergreen.”Tricia and Natalie both joined the NICU Parent AdvisoryBoard about two years ago.“Our goal is to make ourselves available to other families.Whether it’s being a familiar face in the hallway orsomeone to talk to, we’re there to bring support andhope to other families,” Natalie explains. The Parent Advisory Board, made up of severalvolunteers who have “graduated” from the NICU,meets weekly on-site at the EvergreenHealth FamilyMaternity Center and invites new families to jointhem to share their babies’ challenges or progress.“We will do anything to help,” Natalie says. “We know it’sa roller-coaster ride of emotions, and a lot times we’rejust there to lean on and make theirlives easier, however we can.”NICU FamiliesPay It ForwardBeyond emotionalsupport, theParent AdvisoryGroup oftenprovides advice on other ways families may navigatetheir NICU experience, helping them, for instance, tostart a blog to keep friends and family up to date.“I tell families to take a picture of their baby every day. It’s amazing how much they change in a short time,”Natalie adds.Today, Natalie’s son Andrew is 3 and Tricia’s son Jackis 4. Both are perfectly healthy, growing boys.“Being part of this group has been a life-changingexperience,” Tricia says. “There is a lot of healingand peace in helping other people. It ends up helpingyou in the end.”Learning you’re expecting marks the beginning of an incredible journey—one that’sfilled with joy, excitement and a new experience, along with many decisions to make andquestions to answer throughout pregnancy and long after a new baby has joined yourfamily. Choosing your healthcare partner, who offers both clinical expertise and emotionalsupport, is one of those important early decisions.Finding the BestChildbirth Team forYour FamilyEvergreenHealth and its affiliated practices—which include compassionate obstetricians, midwives, nursesand support staff—offer suggestions to consider when selecting a team who can best partner with yourfamily during this time. When you’re beginning your search, recommendations from your friends, neighbors and colleagueswho have recently had a baby are often part of what families consider in choosing their own team. Manypatients also find it’s helpful to look online, as many websites offer insight into a provider’s experience andphilosophy. Once you’ve identified a potential partner, you might wish to have an introductory meetingto ensure the chemistry feels like a fit, and that trust and communication come easy. When you’ve found your best childbirth team it’s often helpful to ask plenty of open-ended questions, and to share specific goals, concerns or desires with your provider. Having open communication can helpyou learn about your provider’s personality and childbirth philosophy to ensure your partnership is thebest match for you and your family when it comes time to deliver.10 11
