KiousisJoel DeitchJoel DeitchDavid Bailey<strong>Local</strong> 700 member, Bill Varneypassed away in Fairhope, Alabama,April 2nd of congestive heart failureat the age of 77. A veteran ofover 80 feature films, Varney’s soundwork won him two Oscars in 1981and 1982 for the films Star Wars:Episode V – The Empire Strikes Backand Raiders of the Lost Ark. He wasalso nominated for the films Duneand Back to the Future. His work onRoots secured him an Emmy nomination.Varney was a past president of theCinema Audio Society and in 1990received the Cinema Audio Society’shighest honor, the Career AchievementAward.Varney worked 30 years as a rerecordingmixer and joined UniversalPictures as vice president of soundoperations, where he was responsiblefor the complete remodeling andupgrading of the studio’s sound facilities.He also spent a 14-year stintat Goldwyn Studios as supervising rerecordingmixer.Varney began his career in radioand television in the early 1950s. Hisfirst motion picture was a government-fundedproject at MIT featuringfolk singer Joan Baez, whose fatherwas a professor of physics there. Thisfilm caught the eye of some filmmakers,and before long, he movedto the West Coast. Along with WalterMurch, ACE, MPSE, CAS, he used a58-page memo from Orson Welles toreconstruct the sound for the DVDre-release of the Director’s Edition ofTouch of Evil in 1998.
