MotivationTheregularizedsemi-LagrangianStormer ¨ -VerlettimesteppingmethodSebastianReich1. The semi-implicit semi-Lagrangian (SISL) method classis among the most popular for current NWP packages.2. There are a number of choices for SISL methods suchas 2TL or 3TL, off-centering, extrapolated velocityfields, multiple-iterations, treatment of continuityequation, and appropriate data assimilation, whichaffect the performance of the method (Bernard, MWR2003).3. We will make use of modified equation analysis (MEA)to shed new light onto the SISL approach.
