Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Damages
Calculations: A Trans-Atlantic Dialogue
Synopsis
Books
ISBN: 9781848553026
Publication date: 1 July 2009
Format: Hardback
Dimensions: 152 x 229 mm
Pages: 300
Price: GBP £64.95, EUR €97.95, USD $124.95
The volume focuses on litigation damages, economic and non-economic, including
punitive damages; their definitions, calculations, and assignments in the USA and EU. The
objective is to examine areas of convergence and divergence in the academic and
practical treatment of damages issues in the USA and EU. Many of the chapters in the
volume are drawn from the papers and discussions generated at the Trans-Atlantic
Dialogue meetings of the National Association of Forensic Economics that began in
Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2004. That meeting focused on the development of the “Ogden”
multipliers for calculating damages mandated for consideration by UK Courts in 1999. The
2005 meetings (Dublin, Ireland) centred on Markov methodologies used in the USA for
generating work-life tables and their adoption into damages multipliers, punitive damages,
and the process of Irish tort reform. In 2006 discussions in Florence, Italy, focused on
methods for calculating non-economic damages in the USA and EU as well as the
process of harmonization of tort law within the EU. Most recently, the 2007 discussions in
Barcelona, Spain, dealt with comparisons of scheduled damages systems in the USA and
the EU.

This book contends that the current accounting model, which is used world-wide, and the
current accounting standard-setting process are seriously deficient. The book describes
the deficiencies in a historical context and proposes two complete new models to correct
the deficiencies. One is an accounting model called the “wealth measurement early
warning model”. The other is a standard-setting process model called the “quick response
model”. The new models are revolutionary and controversial. They are revolutionary in
the sense of imposing extensive changes on the accounting establishment, but also
because they have three characteristics that are totally absent in the current system:
1. They are simple to understand and apply
2. They are quick to answer questions about new situations
3. They are reflective of economic events as they occur.
Today, important fisheries have become commercially extinct and others are threatened.
The dominant presence of this scientific uncertainty indicates the need to rethink the
existing fishery management system. This book examines in detail the underlying root
causes of our failure to successfully manage the fishery resources of the world’s oceans
and offers alternative solutions that will allow human society to maximize the long-term
benefits from ocean resources. This monograph will be of great interest to academics in
economics, business, environmental sciences and sociology, in addition to the core
market of natural resources management, environmental policy, resource conservation,
economic development and geography. In addition, it is relevant for those working in
fisheries management for government bodies and NGOs.

Managing Foreign Subsidiaries: Headquarters Role,
Synopsis
ISBN: 9781848556669
Publication date: 1 July 2009
A major development in recent research on the multinational enterprise (MNE) is the
increased attention given to the interdependent, differentiated roles of the subsidiaries and
their implications for MNE and subsidiary management. Paralleling this development is
the shift away from studying subsidiaries as subunits to be controlled by the headquarters
to investigating what subsidiaries do and how their activities can help develop firm-specific
advantages.
This volume includes contributions from leading scholars in the field from North America,
Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Different from the traditional, single-discipline-based
investigation, it presents a multi-disciplinary approach to researching subsidiary dynamics
and its effective management, with a focus on three important issues: the role of the
headquarters within the context of subsidiaries as members of a differentiated,
interdependent network; the development of subsidiary capabilities and their impact on
firm performance; and subsidiaries as learning agents for the MNE, particularly in
emerging markets such as China.
This book, Utterance Interpretation and Cognitive Models, is a collection of papers that
stems from the conference of the same name held at the Free University of Brussels in
June 2006. Our main objective is to reconcile armchair theorising about the semanticspragmatics
interface with hypotheses about cognitive architecture. For that reason, the
papers in the collection place some of the hottest questions in contemporary philosophy of
language within the scope of a psychologically plausible theory of human communication.
The collection is articulated into three parts. The first concerns the cognitive counterparts
of lexical meanings. The second explores the links between moods and forces. The third
looks at the epistemological status of semantic theory from the point of view of human
psychology.
This volume is motivated by key questions and challenges associated with reviving and
developing a comparative perspective. One organizing theme of the volume is to present
comparative analysis as a means to explain and describe organizational heterogeneity, at
varying levels and in varying contexts. While much empirical work looks for the sources of
homogeneity within fields, industries, etc., we believe that one advantage of doing
comparative analysis is to make assessments of the observed differences between
organizations. Thus, we have asked all the authors to consider how their style of
comparative analysis enhances our understanding of organizational heterogeneity. The
volume consists of two sections: an introductory essay section and a section where
authors focus on specific theoretical, methodological and empirical topics. A couple of
papers are original empirical analyses that use a comparative logic or method. We expect
that each paper, in addition to providing a theoretical contribution, will offer a metadiscussion
that explains how taking a comparative approach enhances our understanding
of the phenomenon of interest.
