Sullivan Middle SchoolSummer Reading ProgramJune 2013Dear Students:What’s the one thing that you can easily do to help keep your academic skills sharp? It’s reading! Many studies have shown that reading in the summer helps keeps students from losing much of whatthey have gained in the school year. Students who don’t read at all during the summer can start theschool year as much as one full month behind their peers who have read. While all of your teachers encourage you to read as widely and as often as you possibly can, thissummer we are requesting that all students read R.J. Palacio’s novel Wonder. We have beenfortunate to receive funding so that all students have received a copy of this book. Attached you willfind the activities your teachers have created for you to help them get to know you as a reader. This summer will we continue our tradition of scheduling some great book lunches in the MediaCenter for you. You are welcome to join us for pizza and great discussion from 11-1 on June 12 and26 as well as July 10 and 24. You may come on any or all of these days. We will have some booktalks and book passes, games, activities and prizes. We will keep the Media Center open until 3:00on these days in case you need internet access to complete your assignments.Remember that the best way to tackle a summer-long assignment is to make a schedule of what youwill read. We recommend at least 30 minutes of reading each and every day.Your teachers and I are looking forward to hearing what you thought of Wonder.Best wishes for a great summer!Mrs. McLeanInstructional Coachcmclean@rhmail.org
