Page 8Steve Edwards wins <strong>Virginia</strong> Outstanding Faculty AwardSteve Edwards, associate professor of computer science, receivedone of the State Council for Higher Education in <strong>Virginia</strong> (SCHEV)awards for <strong>Virginia</strong> Outstanding Faculty on February 12,<strong>2013</strong>. This award is the "highest honor for <strong>Virginia</strong> Faculty."“Stephen H. Edwards is an Associate Professor in the Departmentof <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Science</strong> at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>, where he has taught since1998.“Dr. Edwards’ research interests are in software engineering, theuse of formal methods in programming languages, automated testing,and software components. In addition, he is internationallyknown as a researcher in computer science education, and one ofthe leading advocates of teaching software testing to students ofcomputing.“In 2012, Dr. Edwards was appointed as the W.S. “Pete” White Chair for Innovation in EngineeringEducation by the <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> Board of Visitors. This endowed chair was created by AmericanElectric Power to honor Pete White, in order to ‘celebrate and illustrate innovative approachesto teaching using technology.’”“Dr. Edwards actively serves as an associate editor for Transactions on Computing Education, the flagshipprofessional society journal for educational research articles in his field.“Dr. Edwards’ research group at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> has produced a number of educational tools forclassroom use, the most well-known of which is Web-CAT: The Web-based Center for AutomatedTesting. This tool, which is designed to give computing students feedback about the quality ofcomputer programs they write, is the most widely used open-source educational tool of its kind,with over 10,000 users at 75 schools at present. Web-CAT won the Premier Award in 2006, givenby the NEEDS consortium to recognize high-quality, non-commercial courseware designed to enhanceengineering education.“Dr. Edwards received a B.S. in electrical engineering from the California Institute of <strong>Tech</strong>nologyin 1988, an M.S. in computer and information science from The Ohio State University in 1992, anda Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1995, where he majored in software engineering, andminored in both formal methods in programming languages and in information retrieval and databases.He is married to Diane M.
