Message from the Conference ChairsIt is our great pleasure to welcome all ofyou to the IAPR 2005Conference onMachineVision Applications (IAPR MVA2005). This workshop is co-sponsored by MVAConference Committee, IAPR TC-8, and National Institute ofAdvanced IndustrialScience andTechnology (AIST).This is the ninth conference since the first one was heldinTokyo in1988.W e holdthisworkshop inTsukuba Science City. The city, with beautiful Mt.Tsukuba to the north,is well knownas the locationofTsukuba Science Expo '85.It currently functions as aninternationally-known center ofscience and technology;both the government andprivate firms continue to establish new R & D centers andeducational institutes.Recently the area ofvision applications has been growing in factory automation, medical diagnosis, security, intelligent transport system, geographic informationsystem, humancomputer interaction, andwearable computing. Then, we have receivedmorethan200extendedabstracts from 25countries inthe world.Among them, 43and102papers have beenselectedfor oral andposter presentations, respectively.Unfortunately, however, some excellent papers have not been accepted due to the limitation ofpresentationslots. Inadditionto the acceptedpapers, three distinguishedresearchershave beeninvitedto give their fruitful presentations. W e thankthose three speakers:Prof.Nobuyuki Otsu, Prof.Giulio Sandini, andProf.AlexW aibel, for accepting ourinvitations. W e have also selected three papers from those presented in the 1994workshop, which is most influential to the Machine Visionresearch fieldinthis decade.Organizing a workshop is a challenging andinteresting job.W e wouldlike to expressour gratitude to the members ofthe MVA Organizing Committee who have done such awonderful job oforganizing the MVA 2005 workshop so successfully. Lastly, weexpress our hearty gratitude to all participants, andwe hope that this workshop will beaninformative andmemorable one to all ofyou.Mikio TakagiCo-Chair, MVA2005Shibaura Institute ofTechnologyKatsuhiko SakaueCo-Chair, MVA2005AISTYoshinori KunoProgram Co-Chair,MVA2005Saitama UniversityInSo KweonProgram Co-Chair,MVA2005KAIST
