Tjala Arts to get a new centre
In the last eight years, Tjala Arts has grown to twice its size
because of the big demand for work from the artists.
There are also a lot of other Anangu artists who would like
to work there, but there isn’t enough room for them.
So it’s good news that a new Arts Centre will be built in
Amata that will be a much better place to work. This new
Centre will keep out the extreme cold and heat—and
the dust as well. It will be big enough so that artists can
work on much larger pieces and will also be easier to use
Current Tjala Arts building at Amata
by people with disabilities.
It is hoped that the Centre will also be used by the whole community as a place for learning and
providing a place to run other programs.
Both the State and Australian Governments are funding this new building which we hope will be
finished by December 2009.
New Service Co-ordinators for the Lands
Ina Scales, Bob Smith, Mary Anderson and
Sue Wallace
Mary Anderson and Ina Scales have recently joined the
Service Coordination team on the APY Lands. They will
continue to manage Wiru Palyantjaku meetings but will also
work closely with Bob Smith and Mark Jackman to
communicate with communities, APY Lands leaders and
Anangu about the services they get or deliver. They will
regularly visit communities, Alice Springs and Adelaide to
work on improving the programs and services for Anangu.
Mary and Ina will also manage and coordinate interpreting
services. They will help to find suitable interpreters for events
and meetings on the Lands and support Anangu
interpreters. They will also be working with interpreter students, assisting in teaching the course
and supporting interpreters as they take on their first jobs.
Ina lives in Pipalyatjara and Mary in Umuwa. If you need any assistance with programs or
Earlier this year, six aged care
graduates were rewarded for their
efforts at a special ceremony. They all
received their Certificate 3 in Aged
Care training for staff at the Tjilipi
Pampaku Ngura Aged Care Facility in
Pukatja.
The course, supported by Nganampa
Health and TAFE SA, was run one day a
month for 12 months. The training was
very practical. The students learnt by
working at Tjilpi Pampaku Ngura and
doing their study at the same time. “It was really helpful that Pukatja let their staff work around
their study”, said lecturer Sue Light.
“They are really happy with their success. Many of the graduates have already said they want
to learn more in other areas such as disability, interpreting, nursing and literacy and numeracy”,
said Sue. It wasn’t only the students who gained from this experience. The lecturers, Sue Light
and Christine Boyer, learnt about Anangu culture from both the students and the residents. One
day they even went hunting maku!
Nganampa Health Council has scholarships for Anangu who want to enrol in health studies. If you have finished high
school and are interested in working in health care, contact your local Nganampa Health Clinic to apply.
Anangu Backyard—Stories for Children
Tjitji from Mimili, Iwantja, Fregon, Amata, Pukatja,
Kalka, Nyapari, Watarru and Pipalyatjara had their
paintings on display at the Anangu Backyard
exhibition at the Adelaide Festival Centre during April
and May.
Each APY Lands school did something different. For
example, the Kaltjiti Headmaster invited Kaltjiti Elders
to go to the school and
work with the kids telling
them their traditional stories
in their traditional ways, while teaching them how to paint. At
Nyapari, children worked in pairs with their tjamu kami or kuntili or
kamuru each painting the same story in their own different ways.
As part of the event, four Anangu storytellers sat in a sandpit with
schoolchildren, teachers, parents and other visitors and told their
stories - drawing pictures in the red desert sand from the APY Lands.
The Ernabella school choir also sang one Saturday night and the
audience loved them!
Anangu Backyard was a big success with lots of people attending.
Many pieces of artwork were sold, including three to the South
Australian Art Gallery.
Young Fregon student
Making Music
Musicians who are doing the Certificate 2 in Music will
soon perform in concerts in Alice Springs, Port Augusta
and other places as part of the course.
In a joint venture between the Department for
Families and Communities (DFC) and APY TAFE, young
men and women are enrolling in the Certificate 2 in
Music.
The lecturer, Mark Smerdon, says the level of musical
skills among many of the students is already very high.
“Most of them could share the stage with many of the
world’s great musicians”, Mark says.
The course will fill in some of the gaps in their musical
knowledge, like care of equipment, reading chords and sheet music, some music theory and
how to get a job in the music industry.
DFC is supporting this exciting venture by providing the musical equipment, and the Youth
Workers are assisting the musicians by supervising practice sessions and helping with the
administration and legwork.
Classes are currently available in Amata, Indulkana and Mimili. Lots of good sounds coming
from those three communities in the coming months.
Anyone who wants to join a class can ask their Youth Worker or their TAFE Lecturer.
Meet Ethan Dagg
Ethan Dagg has been a youth worker on the APY Lands at
Ernabella for four years. He helped establish one of the first
youth sheds on the Lands which is open five nights a
week.
The youth shed offers a safe place for young people to
get together and play pool, video games, arcade games
and dance at the occasional disco. Ethan also takes
young people on bush hunting trips.
In 2007 Ethan became the first Anangu to be qualified as
a youth worker on the Lands. He earned his Certificate 3 in
youth work through his attendance and hard work in the
training program with Relationships Australia (SA).
Ethan’s first love is dirt bikes. He built a dirt bike track near his home at Ernabella which is now
the base for the APY Racing Team. He helped put together a submission to government to
start a dirt bike program on the Lands. The government agreed to this and this program is now
run by the Department of Families and Communities (DFC).
For the past three years, Ethan has also led a team of riders in the annual Finke Desert Dirt Bike
race (check out the Sports Supplement for Finke photos and report).

Wiltja students in the Cattleman Program
In June, six students from the Wiltja program travelled to Katherine,
NT to learn new skills such as fencing, cattle work, maintaining bores
and bore engines and working with horses.
The two weeks of training with Charles Darwin University involved
long working days and the students worked hard. But in the end the
guys were able to work with horses, fix a fence in under five minutes
and to wrestle ‘weaner’ cattle.
The students, Nathaniel Yai Yai, Bobby Warren, Arnold
Shilling, Walter Tjami, Douglas Finn and Wiltja graduate
Justin Shilling, did a great job and made it back in one
piece – and no-one fell off their horse!
The program promotes personal growth and provides
pathways to help students move from school into work
such as the cattle industry, mining or traineeships. The
good work of the students will be continued through
programs being run in Adelaide for the rest of the year.
APY Thunder makes it four in a row
V OLUME 1, ISSUE 4
It was a close match most of the game but APY Thunder ended up beating the Maralinga
Eagles by 33 points in the 2008 Rio Tinto Indigenous Lands Challenge Cup.
The game was played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday 24 May as part of the Indigenous Round
prior to the Power vs Sydney match.
It was a very fast, free flowing match with many goals kicked and the talent on both sides was
really impressive!
Maralinga got off to a flyer in the match, before APY steadied to a one-point lead by quarter
time. Inaccurate kicking by the Thunder kept Maralinga in the game at halftime.
The third term was brilliant, with APY kicking the first 3 goals to get out to a 5 goal lead. They
looked like they might run away with the match before Maralinga kicked 5 goals in the last ten
minutes to trail by only 2 points at the last change.
The Eagles goaled again from the first bounce of the last term to put themselves in front for the
first time since the first quarter. But as all good teams should, the Thunder rose to the challenge
and kicked the last 6 goals of the game to win by 33 points.
This makes it four out of four for the Thunder and the players celebrated by treating the
Finke Desert Race June 2008
Twenty-five young men were chosen from a group of 40 from the
Substance Misuse and Youth Program to form the APY Racing team
to compete in this year’s Finke Desert Race. This bike race is held
over two days on the June long weekend when riders have to make
it over 460 kms from Alice Springs to Finke and return.
The APY team, who came from Amata, Fregon, Mimili, Ernabella,
Indulkana and Watarru, are first put through a training course. They
are loaned bikes and taught how to look after them and repair
them. Before racing they all agree to a code of conduct, which
includes no alcohol, petrol or illicit substances.
Five riders from APY Racing finished in the first 300 of 500 bike entries and
two riders finished fourth and fifth in the 0 to 200cc class. This was an
outstanding performance given the rain and muddy conditions.
Manager of the Substance Misuse and Youth Programs, Peter Kay, said
the race was a great success and a real benefit to the riders. “The race is
an excellent opportunity for young people to involve themselves in
something fun with a healthy focus.”
The pit crew at the Finke end of the race were supported by clients from
the Department of Family and Community’s (DFC)
disability program on the APY Lands. DFC staff and staff
from other agencies also volunteered as pit crew for the
event.
Riders hope to compete in the Kulgera Enduro on 28
September and the Masters Games Enduro at the Off
with a ceremony and
symbolic cattle muster.
The lecturers also gained huge personal
satisfaction from the experience. “I’ve seen big
changes in the men. They’ve got pride in
themselves and confidence in what they are
doing and it makes my job such a
pleasure when I see this,” Toby Gorringe
said.
Peter Dempster agreed, “The gratitude
shown to both of us and unashamed
pride of the attendees and extended
families at the closing ceremony was
mind-blowing and we have never
experienced such open, heartfelt
appreciation of our work,” he said.
