overview <strong>of</strong> engineering at city college<strong>The</strong> Grove School <strong>of</strong> Engineering at <strong>The</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> is home to an exceptional publicly supportedengineering program in the heart <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>City</strong>.Situated on a 36-acre campus in northern Manhattan,distinguished by some <strong>of</strong> the country's earliest and stillmost beautiful university gothic architecture, the GroveSchool benefits from the proud heritage and high record<strong>of</strong> achievement <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong> - one <strong>of</strong> the singlemost powerful avenues <strong>of</strong> access to the AmericanDream in our nation.CCNY's School <strong>of</strong> Engineering was one <strong>of</strong> the first publicinstitutions <strong>of</strong> its kind, and is still the only public school <strong>of</strong>engineering in <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>City</strong>. <strong>The</strong> School's ties to engineeringgo back to 1853, when <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong> was knownas the Free Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong>, and a course in civilengineering was required for all students. In 1919, the<strong>College</strong>'s Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees approved the creation <strong>of</strong> aseparate School <strong>of</strong> Technology with its own dean andfaculty, and in 1962 it formally became the School <strong>of</strong>Engineering and moved to its current home in SteinmanHall.<strong>The</strong> Grove School <strong>of</strong> Engineering holds a position <strong>of</strong>national standing among public schools <strong>of</strong> engineering,and is recognized for the excellence <strong>of</strong> its instructionaland research programs, particularly in technologies withrelevance to <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>City</strong> and <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> State. It alsoleads in the breadth <strong>of</strong> its <strong>of</strong>ferings, with bachelor’s,master's, and doctoral degree programs in eight engineeringfields - biomedical, chemical, civil, computer,electrical, environmental and mechanical engineering,and computer science.34
