The School's ties to engineeringgo back to 1853, when City College was knownas the Free Academy of New York, and a course in civilengineering was required for all students. In 1919, theCollege's Board of Trustees approved the creation of aseparate School of Technology with its own dean andfaculty, and in 1962 it formally became the School ofEngineering and moved to its current home in SteinmanHall.The Grove School of Engineering holds a position ofnational standing among public schools of engineering,and is recognized for the excellence of its instructionaland research programs, particularly in technologies withrelevance to New York City and New York State.
