BBC Media Action www.bbc.co.uk/<strong>media</strong>action/BBC Media Action is the international <strong>media</strong> development arm of the BBC.Until December 2011 it was known as the BBC World Service Trust.Its operations in <strong>Somalia</strong> and the rest of East Africa are run from a regionaloffice in Nairobi, Kenya.BBC World Service Trust has been active in <strong>Somalia</strong> for more than ten years,training journalists and producing programmes for rebroadcast by local radiostations.In 2011, the Trust launched a UNICEF-funded project to promotebetter child health, nutrition and hygiene in <strong>Somalia</strong>.This focused on the production of a series of 15-minute radio dramas to befollowed by interactive discussions between experts and members of theaudience.In late 2011 the Trust was also undertaking training and mentoring in six radiostations across <strong>Somalia</strong> to develop and sustain interactive programmes thatpromote human rights, peace-building and good governance.In addition it was producing a series of radio magazine programmes on peacebuilding, human rights and civic education for broadcast on the BBC SomaliService and a separate series of weekly programme for UNDP <strong>about</strong> theprocess of developing a new constitution for <strong>Somalia</strong>.The UNDP-funded project also involved training Somali journalists how toreport on constitutional issues and allow ordinary people to give their opinionson the process.Another project involves training journalists in Somaliland and Puntland inHIV/AIDS reporting and creating a series of public service announcements onHIV/AIDS awareness for broadcast by radio stations in these two areasRegional Director for East Africa - Judy HoustonMob: (Kenya) +254 20 227 6000Email: judy.houston@bbcwst.netAddress: BBC East Africa Bureau, 5 th Floor, Longonot Place, Kijabe Street,PO Box 58621, Nairobi, Kenya.79
