While motorhomes have taken center stage at pastshows, this year marked what I consider a pivotal year for trailers, fifth-wheels andeven pickup campers. On display were not our fathers’ trailers with a few décor andfloorplan changes, but RVs sporting true innovation and excitement. The buzzwords for 2012 are “lightweight,” “half-ton towable,” “fuel economy,”and “green.” Weight is coming down, lengths are going up, and interiors are morelivable with noticeable enhancements found in almost every nook and cranny. Andall this as many manufacturers embrace green technology in an effort to preserveresources and align themselves with people and groups who are environmentallyconscious.Interestingly, the effort to trim pounds from trailers and fifth-wheels is not alwaysrelative to downsizing. In fact, the opposite is true. We’re seeing bigger trailers, many in the 33-35-foot range, that are no longer plagued by evil handling manners.Lightweight materials and improved weight distribution have made it possibleto produce trailers exceeding 30 feet that can actually be towed without trepidation. The transition to longer travel trailers gives the manufacturers platforms to designinteriors that emulate Class A motorhomes, which is certainly a paradigmchanger. Case in point is the new line of towables from Winnebago. If you closedyour eyes before entering these new Winnebagos, you’d swear you were in one ofthe company’s Class A motorhomes. Living areas with wraparound couch seatingand beautiful kitchens are key elements that have been adopted. And Winnebago isnot alone in this segment. Trailers from Evergreen, K-Z, Nash (Northwood), Heartlandand a number of offerings from Keystone, Forest River and Jayco — among others— are certainly game-changers.Buyers will also find many smaller trailers with great floorplans and characteristics, and of course, a number of unique rigs that are products of out-of-the-boxthinking. Forest River’s Aviator and Airstream’s new eclectic 27-footer designed byChristopher C. Deam are just two examples. Born Free, a company that builds highlineClass Cs, showed a 22-foot travel trailer prototype that is obviously aimed at upscalebuyers. At $85,500, the Born Free Trail-R-Lodge, sans slideout, will take a shotat wooing discriminating trailer enthusiasts who are more enamored by highline fixturesthan extraordinary space. While extra-long, multiple-slideout fifth-wheels have evolved into super expensiverolling mansions, the opposite end of the spectrum is getting a lot of attention.Half-ton pickups with 5-ton-plus tow ratings have made it feasible to pull full-featured28- to 32-foot fifth-wheels with multiple slideouts. Many have bunkhousefloorplans for sleeping versatility. Team up one of these truly livable fifth-wheelswith trucks like Ford’s EcoBoost-powered F-150 and you’ll have a package thatworks well for families or couples, without sacrificing amenities and the ability tovisit some of the more beautiful destinations with length limitations.Never before have we seen so much excitement in the towable arena. RV ACTION LINE >THE CASE OF THEDISAPPEARING TVAfter getting into a dispute with his localdealer over a theft from his trailer, a readerrequested that RV Action Line help facilitatea solution. In March 2010 we bought a 2010 Sabre29CKDS fifth-wheel from Route 66 RVs Inc.in Claremore, Oklahoma. The RV wasequipped with, among other things, a 32-inch Toshiba flat-screen TV.On January 26, 2011, we took the RVback to Route 66 for some minor warrantyrepairs. When we dropped the RV off atRoute 66, we were told to leave the doorlocked and we did. We picked up the RVon approximately February 19, 2011. Wedid not go into the RV until April 2, 2011,when it was time to get ready for thecamping season. We unlocked the door, went in and found the TV missing, as wellas the remote control for our radio/DVDplayer and some personal items from theoverhead cabinet. We also noticed theframe of the door mirror we installed in thebathroom had been broken and a [drinking]glass secured in the kitchen cabinethad been broken and placed in our trashcan (the glass was of no great value, butthe damage was an additional indicationof Route 66’s lack of care). We immediatelyreturned to Route 66, where we talkedto the service manager and the parts manager. When we told them our TV was missingand we would like to get it back, theservice manager said, “Oh, you’re thethird one that’s happened to.” We werequite shocked when he told us that Route66’s insurance did not cover the stolen TVand they would not reimburse us for it.That Route 66’s insurance does notcover the theft does not mean it is not liablefor the damages. It has had three TVsstolen from RVs on its lot so it is obviouslynot exercising ordinary care to protect thebailed property in its possession. Our RVwas locked when we left it with Route 66,it was locked when we picked it up, andthere is no sign that the door has beentampered with. Either Route 66 left it unlockedat some point while they had it,which left the RV vulnerable to theft, orone of its employees is taking propertyfrom the RVs.We previously owned an RV and dealtmany times with Route 66 for repairs tothat RV; we were always pleased with thework. We had never had a problem withthem and felt comfortable leaving ourproperty with them. That makes this situationvery disappointing. We have purchased another TV comparableto the TV stolen and a universal remotefor the radio/DVD player. The TV webought is a Panasonic 32-inch flat screen. We bought a Panasonic instead of a Toshibabecause the Panasonic had a betterpicture than the 32-inch Toshiba it was sittingnext to and was only $10 more thanthe Toshiba. The TV and remote were$404.74; a copy of the receipt is enclosed. We expect Route 66 to reimburse us thisamount as damages due to their negligenceand lack of care, and we would appreciateyour assistance in the matter.John & Brenda UpdikeClaremore, OklahomaIn the case of the missing TV, the criticalissue is timing. Upon the first read of theUpdikes’ letter, we sympathized with theirplight and would hate to be placed in asimilar situation, but proving a direct causeand effect with the theft was going to bedifficult because of the lost six weeks betweenwhen they picked up their unit andwhen they noticed the TV was missing. However, the Updikes’ claim that there wasa history of other TVs disappearing off thelot does add spice to the situation.Route 66’s version has slightly differentdates, but the basic tenets are the same:The RV was serviced, it sat on the lot, it waspicked up but not entered by the owner, then after several weeks the owner returnedto report a theft. In the end, the dealershipsaid it offered to split the difference. We would have taken them up on theiroffer, given the extenuating circumstances. Here’s the response from Route 66 RVs:I will summarize the issue with Mr. Updike. He brought in his trailer on January 26for service. He left his trailer and it waslocked until the technician performed theservice on the unit. Service was completedon February 14. The unit was locked andstored with all other service units. Mr.Updike did not pick up his RV until March18. He picked it up and it was locked and hedid not look in it, to our knowledge. He returned30 days later to say the TV was missing. We discussed that he would need tofile a police report and turn the claim intohis insurance company. He had signed aservice authorization form stating the dealershipwas not responsible for theft ofvehicles and/or items within those vehicles.Neither Mr. Updike nor Route 66 RVsknows when the loss occurred. Especiallysince it was over a month after he pickedup the unit before he noticed [the theft].We have a secure lot with a 6-foot, chainlinkfence topped with barbed wire surroundingour property. It is also well lighted. He alleges that it could be internal. That doesn’t make sense because it wouldhave been easier and less noticeable forsomeone to take from a new stock unit inthe middle of winter. He later came back with a receipt for anew TV and wanted us to reimburse him.Again, we stated that we weren’t responsible. But, as a gesture of goodwill, we offered topay for 50 percent, which he declined. I believewe acted properly in this matter, butthere are some people that are hard to satisfy.Brad SheltonPresident, Route 66 RVs qAfter exhausting all other resources withoutsuccess, please forward informationwith copies of appropriate bills and correspondenceto RV Action Line, 3300 FernbrookLane N, Suite 200,Minneapolis, MN 55447.Please include a self-addressed,stamped envelope. THIS LANDFORT SUMTERNATIONAL MONUMENTby Len CousineauEvery American school kidlearns the basic facts about theCivil War, but people who wantan in-depth understanding of the intricaciesof American history and cultureshould revisit the Civil War as adults.Doing so by traveling to any of the 70national park sites that detail aspects ofthe war may turn casual learners intoCivil War buffs. The year 2011 marked the 150th anniversaryof the United States’ mostdefining and devastating war. MoreAmericans were killed during the battlesthat raged between 1861 and 1865than in every other American militaryconflict combined. Travelers can learnabout the causes of the war, the numerousbattles, the 620,000 casualties andthe costs and consequences of the CivilWar at these 70 sites. If possible, however, RVers shouldvisit South Carolina’s Fort Sumter, where the war began.South Carolina stated in its Declarationof the Immediate Causes of Successionthat the election of 1860 had resultedin the presidency of Abraham Lincoln,a man “whose opinions and purposesare hostile to slavery,” and thestate officially seceded from the Unionon December 20, 1860.Hostilities came to a head on April12, 1861, when a 10-inch mortar shellwas fired from Fort Johnson at FortSumter, the federal fort in Charlestonharbor. That first shot exploded abovethe fort, beginning a 34-hour siege thatturned into a devastating four-year war– one that has resonated throughout thecountry for 15 decades. Before going offshore to visit theactual fort, visitors should begin theireducation on Concord Street inCharleston at the Fort Sumter Visitor EducationCenter. Exhibits detail the sectionalismand rancor that eventually ledto the Civil War’s first shot.Upon arriving at Fort Sumter viaferry from downtown Charleston orMount Pleasant, visitors can listen to a10-minute history talk given by a ranger,or they can spend their allotted time exploringthe park on their own. Visitors tothe area who find military history fascinatingmay also want to visit Sullivan’sIsland to explore Fort Moultrie, the onlyunit of the national park system that detailsthe entire 171-year history (1776-1947) of American seacoast defense. qFort Sumter National Monument,(843) 883-3123, www.nps.gov/fosu14 March 2012 TRAILER LIFE www.trailerlife.comGo To:.comUser GuideContents

HITCHEDby Barry ZanderA SEEMINGLY SIMPLE SIDE TRIP CAN ADDSIGNIFICANCE TO YOUR JOURNEYWhen you’re on the road, always seeking out newvistas over new horizons, you’re bound to run into the unexpected. We’ve encountered this severaltimes in our RVing days, and I’ll tell you, there’s never a logical explanation. The most memorable instancebegan when we pulled our travel trailerinto the lot by the office of Ken,Monique’s favorite massage therapist inMt. Ida, Arkansas. It was at the end ofher massage that the word “tankawa”formed in her mind. After asking Ken towrite down the word, her eyes swelledwith tears for some unknown reason. We climbed back in the truck andhauled our RV westward into Oklahoma, planning to stop for the night in neighboringKansas. I suggested a stop at thetourism office for free coffee and an upto-dateOklahoma map. When we wentin, I headed for the information desk.Where was Monique? She hadwalked into the information center, turned to her right and was instantlydrawn to a poster reading “TONKAWATRIBE.”She showed me the poster. Gasp! Atthe information desk we found out little. The ladies behind the desk could onlypoint us to a town called Tonkawa, butthat was all they knew.We took off westward for a 200-miledrive to Tonkawa, arriving just as thesun was setting and with no place topark in sight. We took a chance on stayinghitched up in a public park. I noticedoutlets on the power poles, obviouslythere for RVs. Just as we stopped, a redpickup truck pulled up next to us.“That one doesn’t work,” the ponytailedNative American man namedTravis told us. “Try the next pole.”It didn’t work either – no big deal.We had expected to dry-camp anyway. That’s when Travis tested the circuitand decided it needed replacement. He drove to the city’s utilities office, returning in a heavy-duty utility truckto make the repair. He had been on his way home fromwork when he saw us turn in. Not aTonkawa, he was an Osage-Poncawho knew little about the Tonkawatribe, except they had a casino andtribal office in town.At the office the next day, we wantedto tell someone of Monique’sTonkawa revelation. We met with severalvery congenial people, includingthe tribe’s president, all very willing tofill us in on the history of theTonkawas. They even gave each of usa sweatshirt and mug with the triballogo. No one ever asked why we werethere, and I’m still not sure we have ananswer to that question anyway. It was a little side trip that cost ustwo days out of our unscheduled triptoward the Northwest. Rather thanbeing just another day on the road, itturned into two with significance. As we look back on this and otheradventures during our days roamingNorth America, we give thanks that weare able, not only to participate inthese experiences, but also to appreciatehow they add to the richness ofour lives. qNorthwood Manufactuing, Inc, Circle 105 on Reader Service CardTRAILER LIFE March 2012 15Go To:.comUser GuideContents

By Donna IkenberryCountless Critters In Middle AmericaDrive one of many roads leading to Oklahoma’s Wichita Mountains WildlifeRefuge and you’ll almost be convinced that you are in another region ofthe country. Ascending from surrounding plains and flatlands, weclimbed into an island-like world of post and blackjack oaks, rocky outcrops, remnantmixed grass prairies and an assortment of manmade lakes many find excellentfor bass fishing. My husband, Mike, and I arrived in May to the 59,020-acre refuge, the largestrefuge in The Sooner State. Unlike most wildlife refuges, this one permits camping, thus allowing for multi-day visits and time to enjoy the trails, lakes and wildlife.Located in southwest Oklahoma, the region was originally set aside as a forestpreserve in 1901. Later, in 1905, it was deemed a game preserve. Today it is the oldestmanaged refuge in the United States. There are 553 refuges in the United Statescomprised of 150 million acres of habitat dedicated to preserving native Americanwildlife. Ironically, hunting is allowed on many of the refuges, including WichitaMountains where there are elk and deer seasons.Visitors to Wichita Mountains often come to see the American bison, or buffalo,as they are often called. Once estimated at 60 million — the largest mass of land animalsto ever exist — the bison were almost extinct by the late 1800s. The federal governmentintervened, along with concerned conservationists, and herds were rebuilt.TRAILER LIFE March 2012 17Go To:.comUser GuideContents

Today, after being successfullyintroduced, there are about 700 RockyMountain elk and many wild turkeysroaming the refuge.Texas longhorn cattle also roam thepreserve. In 1927, 30 head of longhorncattle were introduced to the refuge toform a federal herd. Today, the herdnumbers around 300 longhorns. The tiny bird breeds in anarrow area of the south-central UnitedStates and north-central Mexico. The refuge and adjacent Fort Sill provideproper habitat for the vireo andthus an expanding vireo population. The Oklahoma Audubon Council recentlyrecognized the refuge as an ImportantBird Area (IBA). IBAs rangefrom just a few acres to thousands ofacres, and provide necessary habitatsfor one or more species of birds. Therefuge is home to more than 240species of birds, and it supports thesecond largest breeding population ofblack-capped vireos in the world.Other species that helped qualify thesite for designation include the paintedbunting, northern bobwhite quail,red-headed woodpecker and chestnutcollaredlongspur.During our visit we hiked many ofthe trails searching for birds, mammalsand wildflowers, as well as rattlesnakes, copperheads and lizards. There are more than 50 species ofmammals here, 64 kinds of reptilesand amphibians, 36 different fishspecies and 806 plant species. Not every refuge can boast of a NationalRecreational Scenic Trail, but WichitaMountains can. There are 15miles of designated hiking trails windingthrough grassy prairie, scrub oak forest, and across jagged mountains that aremore than 500 million years old. By Bill and Jenn Gehr Photos By Jenn GehrSIMPLESTABILITYTORKLIFT’S STABLE LOAD SUSPENSION UPGRADE KIT FOR TRUCKS WITHFACTORY OVERLOAD SPRINGS IMPROVES HANDLING AND ATTITUDEWithout question, when you are behind the wheel ofyour truck safety and stability are mandatory handlingcharacteristics. Add a large fifth-wheel or aheavy camper to the rear and there are a few inherent risksthat enter into the equation, especially while towing in strongwinds or being overtaken by fast commercial trucks. If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to improve thehandling and attitude of your truck while towing, the StableLoad suspension kit by Torklift International is a relatively simplesolution.Stable Load is an inexpensive upgrade suspension add-onthat includes four unique rubber pads that replace the marginallyefficient factory bump stop pads on your truck’s factoryoverload springs. Handling can be improved with almost anytruck with factory overload leaf springs while improving theattitude of sagging rear ends with a heavy camper or a fifthwheelattached. Torklift’s no-drill design is so simple that evenif you’re not mechanically inclined you’ll be able to completethe installation with success in 45 minutes or less.We installed the Stable Load model A7200 kit on a 2011Ford F-350 dually truck used to pull a heavy 36-foot fifthwheel, loaded for full-time living. To begin, it’s important to spray the top of the factory contactpads with WD-40 prior to removal. Using a large screwdriveror a pry bar, remove all four of the contact pads from theframe brackets. Install the new Stable Load pads with the antirotationalkey facing outward and torque the nuts to 40 ft-lbs.That’s it! On some model trucks, this will complete the install.A) Before the new rubber pads were installed a baseline measurement of rear height was established. B) WD-40 is sprayedon the factory contact pads prior to removal.AB24 March 2012 TRAILER LIFE www.trailerlife.comGo To:.comUser GuideContents

CSince the rear frame brackets andoverload leaf springs on our truck weretoo close to insert the thick Stable Loadrubber pad, the rear end of our truckneeded to be lifted using a bottle jackunder the hitch receiver. According toTorklift, the two rear Stable Load padscan be left off entirely, but the systemwill not be as effective overall. In thesecases, Stable Load’s installation manualallows the installer to cut off 3/8-inchfrom the rubber pad in order to gainmore clearance between the framebrackets and the overload leaf springs. In selecting this option, we felt that itwould offer the best performance inpulling the 36-foot fifth-wheel trailer. After Stable Load was installed, wetook it for a test drive without anythingDC) A pry bar is used to remove the factorycontact pads. SEALIT UP!REPLACE THE TOILET BALL SEAL NO LONGERHOLDING WATER AND FIX A SMELLY SITUATIONBy Bill and Jenn Gehr Photos By Bob LivingstonRV enthusiasts get great satisfaction in having all the creaturecomforts of home — until something pops up, like a toilet that’sno longer holding water and is creating unpleasant odors insidethe trailer. Replacing the waste ball or blade seal will usually put thatsmile back on their faces. Some toilet models have a blade and a seal while most later-modeltoilets have a ball and a seal. Over time, constant use, grit, friction, toiletpaper and hard water deposits take their toll on the seal and the ball (orblade) in the toilet. If your toilet has a blade and seal, it’scommon to struggle with toilet paperthat becomes lodged in the groovewhere the blade closes. A simple solutionthat works most of the time is to usea flat-bladed screwdriver bent at a 90-degree angle 1 inch from the tip. Whileholding the foot pedal down (water off),insert the tip of the screwdriver into thegroove and dislodge the toilet paper. Ifthis trick doesn’t solve the issue, theblade and/or seal will need to be replaced.Use caution here; sharp objects, like a screwdriver, can damage the seal.Experienced techs have no problemwith this, but if it’s your first attempt, you might want to opt for a similar toolthat’s made of plastic or nylon.During the last several years, toiletmanufacturers have been using the balland seal to alleviate toilet paper buildupin the mechanism. And that’s the type ofseal we replaced in a Thetford Style IItoilet that was no longer holding waterbetween flushes. The process takes about 45 minutesand you will need a half-inch wrench anda tool to remove the water line from theback of the toilet. We also recommendhaving several old towels on hand … justin case!Once the water line is disconnectedand the toilet placed onthe bench, the four 1/2-inch nutsare removed (two on each side)so the porcelain bowl can be separatedfrom the plastic base. Removethe decorative cover and disconnect thewater line before using the half-inchwrench to remove the two nuts from theflange bolts that hold the toilet to thebathroom floor. Now would be a goodtime to place those old towels aroundthe toilet to absorb the water that willinevitably escape from the water lineonce it’s removed.Lift the toilet from the floor and place iton a solid work surface that has been coveredwith a protective towel to guardagainst damage to the exterior of the toilet.Remove the old closet flange seal. Then remove the four half-inch nuts thathold the porcelain bowl to the plasticbase. Discard the four plastic washersunder each nut. Separate the bowl fromthe base and you will see the seal lyingdirectly on top of the ball. Remove anddiscard the seal and inspect the ball forany obvious scratches or gouges. Replacethe ball if it’s damaged to keep itfrom compromising the new seal.Install the new Thetford waste ballseal with the flat side down. Add suppliedgrease to the underside of thebowl where it meets the seal. Replacethe bowl onto the base; loosely installthe new plastic washers and half-inchnuts. Lift the toilet seat up and centerthe bowl onto the new seal. Finish bycarefully tightening the nuts until theyare snug, making sure the seal does notmove. Do not over tighten or you will bebuying a new toilet!Reinstall the toilet in the RV with thenew flange seal in place, reattach thewater line, check for leaks, replace thedecorative cover and you’re done. Call of TheWild AnimalsSeeing GreatCongregationsOf Wild CrittersFeeds Need ToTravelBy Donna IkenberryWatching animal life in the wild isalways amazing, but recently Irealized that seeing large numbersof animals, great congregations ofthem, is even more of a thrill. Take, for instance, sandhill cranes. They migrate inthe thousands and can be viewed inmany places throughout the country, includingColorado’s San Luis Valley wheremy husband, Mike, and I live.Believe it or not, there are actualterms for great numbers of animals. Forinstance, the name for a group of elk is agang. Giraffes form a tower, porcupinesmake a prickle, and seals form a pod orherd. Birds in general make a flight whenthey are in the air and a flock when theyare on the ground. Some specific groupsof birds have their own terms. For instance, cranes make a sedge, eagles forma convocation and geese make a gaggle.Regardless of what you call them, seeing large numbers of animals in anyone place is an awesome experience, and it gives you a great excuse tochoose a destination for your next RVadventure.MIGRATE TO COLORADO,LIKE THE CRANESOne of my most beloved places is righthere in the San Luis Valley in southernColorado. Just drive up inyour RV and you’re there. Better yet, getout and walk the boardwalk that parallelsthe beach for safe and easy viewing.Although you may see elephantseals at Piedras Blancas anytime of theyear, the action really begins in November.Swimming in from the cold watersof Alaska, where they spend the summer, the enormous males are the firstto come on shore, establishing territories.Adult males are humongous creatureswith blubbery bodies stretchingup to 16 feet long, rough crusty necksand floppy noses that give them theirname. Weighing as much as 5,000pounds in November, the males maylose as much as 40 percent of theirweight by February.Females weigh from 900 to 1,800pounds. Thousands of elk summer inthe Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, thelargest essentially intact natural area inthe contiguous United States. In thewinter, anywhere from 5,000 to 8,000elk gather at the refuge. Home to thelargest elk herd in the world, the areaalso supports a large herd of bison, aswell as deer, moose, bighorn sheep, pronghorn and coyote, plus many smallmammals and a variety of birds.Although you can often see elk fromthe highway, your best bet for seeingthem up close is to sign up for a sleighride. On a minus-17-degree morning webundled up and joined some others for aride; we all smiled when we were handedwarm blankets to drape over ourlaps. Two draft horses pulled the sleighout on the refuge. There are inevitable comparisons— and inevitable expectations. And when a companyintroduces a new product with styling cues that invite comparisonto not one, but two storied profiles, those expectationstend to shoot right off the charts.Judging Keystone RV’s all-new Vantage travel trailer simplyby its silhouette, however, misses the mark entirely. Sure,if you squint at it you might find certain aspects of its designsuggestive of an Airstream towable. One Sweet StopPONCHATOULAHAS CLAIM TOFAME AS THE“STRAWBERRYCAPITAL OFTHE WORLD”By Pamela SelbertAbove: Strawberries are the signaturefruit for Ponchatoula’s annual festival.Below: Revelers reach for beads asfloats parade down Pine Street.Today, walking or driving alongthe busy streets of Ponchatoula,Louisiana, where everystorefront is filled with a shopor other thriving business, you mightbe surprised to learn that not long agothis town was primed for oblivion. You’ll be even more amazed if youcome in April, in time for the annualStrawberry Festival. The hugely popular event, runningApril 13-15, features a family-friendly,Mardi Gras-style parade with a king andqueen, carnival rides and game booths, music on two band stages, more than 100food vendors, and much more. The festivalattracts some 350,000 revelers to thistown of 6,500, which only a few decadesago was all but down for the count. You could have fooled us, too, if ourrecent visit had been our first. But wehad been introduced to Ponchatoula – aChoctaw word for “hanging hair,” referringto the gray beards of Spanish mossthat hang thick in the trees – rightaround the time it was reinventing itselfas “America’s Antique City.”Founded as a railroad town, Ponchatoulawas incorporated 150 years ago, just before the start of the Civil War, saidunofficial historian Jim Perrin, whosefamily in 1861 had already been farminghere for half a century. Today Perrin, aretired history teacher and school principal, operates the Collinswood SchoolMuseum, where local history is displayedin a former schoolhouse. He said the town became prosperousfor its logging and lumber mills, cuttingvirgin pine, cypress and oak for pickets, barrel staves and ship masts, butthat industry came to an end after the“last viable cypress tree in the nearbyswamp was cut down.” A brochure bythe Louisiana Cypress Lumber Companynoted that in 1955, when the last of thetrees were being cut, most trees werebetween 800 and 2,000 years old.Strawberries had also beenimportant to the local economy,as hundreds of railroadcars packed with the redberries grown here pulledout of town each spring. Butthat, too, dwindled afterWorld War II, when youngmen returning from the warno longer wanted to work atthe labor-intensive businessof raising and picking48 March 2012 TRAILER LIFE www.trailerlife.comGo To:.comUser GuideContents

Just about any food that will fit in a deep fryer is available in abundance at the Strawberry Festival. The town ofabout 6,500 swells to 350,000-plus during the three-day event. King Joe Perrin and Queen Brooke Perrin on their private float.strawberries. The annual Strawberry Festivalbegan in 1972, but even that couldn’tstop the town’s decline.By the late 1980s Pine Street, Ponchatoula’smain thoroughfare where most ofthe businesses were located, had seenmany of its doors close. That’s when asmall group of concerned citizens, manyof them left with empty buildings, cameup with the idea of turning Ponchatoulainto an antiques mecca. The endeavor drew a profusion ofantiques stores and related businessesto the downtown area. It was a successbeyond their wildest dreams, Perrinsaid. By the time of our first visit to Ponchatoulain 1993, nearly two dozen antiqueshops occupied the false-frontbrick buildings on Pine Street. We could hardly believe this town almostceased to exist when now sidewalks, restaurants and shops werepacked with visitors, and cars in thesteady stream of traffic bore licenseplates from every state in the Union. We’ve visited Ponchatoula severaltimes since 1993, but our last trip wasright around the three-day 2011 StrawberryFestival. Fewer farmers are growingstrawberries these days – only abouta dozen in the area – but the succulentred berries continue to be a mainstay ofthe local economy.MORE TO LOVEStrawberries and antiques might be excellentreasons to come to Ponchatoula, but the town and surrounding area offermore. This year we came for the StrawberryFestival but arrived three daysearly to revisit places we’d been in pastyears and to explore new ones. Our first stop was the CollinswoodMuseum, moved here from its originalsite one mile west and opened as a museumon its centennial in 1976. Much ispacked into this former one-roomschool: 10,000-year-old Native Americanrelics; antique quilts, toys, clothingand others; Civil War, railroad and earlyfarming artifacts; early photos of thetown and more. Admission is free.Across Pine Street the historic railroaddepot, the third to stand on thesite, has been transformed into PonchatoulaCountry Market, where local artisansoffer their wares. These include ceramics, photography, stained glass, handmade jewelry, elaborate towelcakes, jams and preserves, pickled quaileggs, and more. Just outside, in a largewire enclosure with a pond, is 9-footlong Old Blue Eyes, the town alligatorwho also “writes” a column for his localnewspaper, the Ponchatoula Times. We later spent an afternoon checkingout the antiques stores, still numerousenough for Ponchatoula to keep itstitle. These include Boyer Antiques andDoll Shop, C.J.’s Antiques and Collectibles,Mary’s Antiques, Oldies &Goodies, Roussel’s Antique Shop, Acquisitionsof the Bygone and Trails EndAntiques, all on Pine Street(there are others elsewhere).Near closingtime we spentan enjoyable hourchatting with C.J. Scandurro(of C.J.’s) in his cavernous15,200-squarefootfacility, which he purchasedin 1993 and todayfeatures 40 booths brimming withall sorts of intriguing collectibles.Ponchatoula’s surrounding area (withina 20-mile radius) also offers much tovisitors. We particularly recommend theAfrican-American Heritage Museum inHammond (new since our last visit), GlobalWildlife Center at Folsom, Kliebert’s Turtleand Alligator Farm in Hammond,Amato’s Winery at Independence and LiuzzaProduce Farm near Tickfaw. The African-American Museum, with8,500 square feet of exhibit space, displaysa host of wood carvings from Africa,a magnificent mounted lion, 22 muralsdepicting African and African-Americanhistory, historic slave sale documents andmore. y Gary WescottPHOTOS: GARY WESCOTTRVers put plenty of energy intotheir lifestyle, from planning thetrip to readying their rig. Whatmost RVers aren’t aware of, however, isthe amount of energy used by their fifthwheelor travel trailer in just the flick of alight switch. That’s why we put somelight-emitting diodes (LEDs) to the test. Here’s what you need to know beforeopening your wallet. In 1962, when LEDs were introducedas a practical electronic component, mostof us didn’t know what they were. EarlyLEDs emitted low-intensity red light, butmodern versions are available across thevisible, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, with high brightness. Today,LEDs are flooding the RV market. There are three types of lights traditionallyused in RVs: incandescent, halogen and fluorescent.Incandescent bulbs, normally usedin brake and turn-signal lights and inmany interior lights, have been aroundfor more than 100 years. They producereasonable light, but they also put outconsiderable heat and use a lot of ampsin the process, draining your batteries ifyou do a lot of dry camping. They have along life and are cheap.Halogens are popular. They alsogenerate a lot of heat, give off a verybright light and are pricier.Fluorescent tubes are common inoverhead or over-the-countertop lighting. They run slightly cooler, consumeless energy, put out a nice amount oflight and don’t cost too much. They arelimited generally to 12-inch and 18-inchsingle or double fixtures, and they havea longer life than halogens. We haveused Optronics’ Pulsar 12-inch and 18-inch dual fluorescent lights for years.LED lights, the newcomer, are extremelycool. Measuring a comparablenormal dual-tube compact fluorescentleft on for several hours and the samefixture with replacement Starlights RevolutionT5-12 LED tubes, we found asmuch as a 20-degree Fahrenheit difference.Take that times four or five lightson a hot summer night and you mayneed your air conditioner. Try to removean incandescent or halogen bulb afterless than a minute and you’ll end upwith blistered fingers. That heat is suckingamps from your batteries and significantlywarming up your trailer.LEDs have such a low output thatUnderwriters Laboratories (UL) has notcertified them. The Recreation VehicleIndustry Association (RVIA) requiresanything greater than 4 watts be listed. In a recent interview, Mike Camarota, president of RV lighting manufacturerITC Inc., said, “You can get similarlight from a 3-watt LED as you can getfrom a 10-watt halogen.” Multiply thatdifference in a fifth-wheel with a coupledozen halogens and incandescent bulbsand you have a remarkably huge differencein power consumption. (Did wemention heat?)LEDs can be expensive; often two orthree times the cost of a halogen bulb.Camarota said the average halogenbulb might last about 1,000 hours, whilean LED can last up to 50,000 hours. In anFrom left: Installing the Optronics LED side markers required cutting off the OEM connections and splicing the wires with Quick Cable buttconnectors. To eliminate any possible problems, all connections used Quick Cable butt connectors that have built-in heat shrink. From left: Optronics replacement side markers for both red and amber featured light-emitting diodes that were actually the correctcolor. The Jirah 1330 B45 R5 Extreme with 13 LEDs was a good fit and did produce more light than the original incandescent bulb. Some replacement bulbs were too big to fit the housings.RV environment with variations ofpower that could fall to 35,000 hours, but it’s still probably longer than theuseful life of the RV.So far, the switch to LEDs seems to be ano-brainer; less heat, lower amp draw andmore light. Complicating matters are themany different applications to consider.PUTTING LEDS TO THE TESTFor our test, we borrowed a 2005 35-foot Itasca Meridian to see just what theLED difference might be. Armed with aselection of lights and fixtures fromStarlights, Jirah, Optronics, ITC andGrote, there was a lot to learn and somereal surprises.Starting on the outside, we replacedthe side indicator lights, brake lights, turn signal lights and running lights, back up and docking lights. Optronicssupplied exact replacements for red andamber side markers. The little lightemittingdiodes are actually the correctcolor. Installation required cutting offthe OEM connections and splicing thewhite and black wires with Quick Cablebutt connectors that have built-in heatshrink. When heated with a flame or aheat gun, (a disposable cigarette lighteror a small chef’s tool called a crèmebrûlée torch works well), they shrinkaround the connection and seal themselveswith glue, eliminating future corrosion. In a pinch, the wire nuts suppliedwill also work. This was the start ofsome interesting results when replacingincandescent bulbs with LEDs.It should be noted that some but notall LED lights and bulbs are polarity sensitive.Polarity can be checked with asimple multimeter or just by touchingthe ground and positive to the correspondingwires on the light. No light?Reverse the wires. Wire colors can varyamong white, black, yellow and red, dependingon the manufacturer.Since the Optronics side markerswere a complete unit, designed to workwith the Optronics lens supplied, the resultswere brilliant. On the other hand, when we just replaced the OEM incandescentbulbs in the turn, running lightsand backup lights, the results wereshockingly disappointing. For the turn signals, we used a Jirah ExtremeLED designated as the replacementfor the 1156 incandescent. On the brakelightsand taillights we used Starlights1157. Both looked very bright, but checkingtheir output at night compared to theOEM lights was a shock. It was obviousthat just replacing an incandescent bulbwith an LED was not a good idea.If you look at LEDs on a big semitruck, you will see the whole light is full ofLEDs. The replacement bulbs, howeverbright they were, just created a hot spotin the middle of the lens that was specificallydesigned to work with an incandescent. The same was the case with thebackup lights. Using the Jirah 1210 B45-L3 was similarly an ineffective choice. In the docking light that used awedge base bulb, we tried the Jirah0930-B45 R3 but it was too big to fitthrough the housing. The Jirah 1330 B45R5 Extreme with 13 LEDs was a good fitand did produce more light than theoriginal, probably because of the designof the lens and reflector, and the numberand placement of the LEDs on thebulb. Both the front porch light and thesimilar driver’s overhead sidelight werewoefully inadequate. Like many ownersdo, the recommended 15-amp bulb inthe porch light had been switched to a21-amp incandescent to get more outsidelight. Often this light is left on allnight. The result was actually meltingthe lens. A Starlights Revolution 220bulb seemed to double the brillianceClockwise from left: Using a Jirah 1210B45-L3 in the backup light proved an ineffectivechoice. producing an uncomfortable amount ofheat at night. A pair of Jirah 1530-S45-R3flat wedge lights gave double the readinglight and dramatically reduced the heatoutput. A weak light in the bedroom TVcompartment was replaced with an ITC69927-N13 LED Cluster Surface MountOverhead Light fixture. In the shower we used a round Grotesealed fixture that had a built-in timerand motion sensor. The hallway betweenthe bathroom and the showerwas improved with a pair of Jirah ExtremeLED stick-on lights. The flexible3M adhesive backing conformed nicelyto the slightly curved surface. In the main living and dining room, all of the heat-producing little spot readinglights were upgraded to Starlights1383-220 Revolution bulbs, greatly reducingthe heat in that area. When testingthe three overhead double fluorescentlights, we first tried the Starlightsreplacement bulbs, but our test judges(our wives) agreed they were too harshand bright. Switching to Jirah thin strippeel-and-stick lights designed to fit ThinLights or Optronics housings, the resultwas judged more pleasing. Over thesink, the Starlights 12-inch replacementtubes gave a bright, clean light perfectfor food preparation or washing dishes.THINGS TO CONSIDERThe uses of LEDs are not limited to anRV. The owner of this coach often pulls asmall, enclosed trailer for his motorcycle.Installing the Starlights LED tubes inthe main overhead fixture really lit upthe inside. Outside, where there wasnever a porch light, the owner installeda K-Four light with a built-in switch andchanged the bulb to a Jirah Extreme flatlight. K-Four also has a large selection ofsmall toggle switches that can be adaptedto LED lights. While we did not use it here, theStarlights Brilliant Light fixture is aunique lighting product. By adding pluginaccessories, the LED Brilliant Lightcan be controlled by a dimmer, aday/night sensor or a motion sensor. There is also a night-light feature, andall of this in one unit (single or double),with three replaceable LED lightstrength options.Clockwise from left: In the hallway, we tried a Starlights Revolution 1156 (170 lumens/6500K)on the left — the one on the right is an OEM incandescent bulb. Thenwe compared the Starlights Revolution with the Jirah JC-36-AB series neoprene-backedpeel-and-press LED. In the engine compartment the Starlights Revolution 200 bulbmade a big difference. A Starlights Revolution 200 bayonet mount was a good replacementfor several weaker incandescent bulbs.FOR MORE INFORMATIONGROTE INDUSTRIES(800) 628-0809, www.grote.com/AmericaITC INC.(574) 389-8986, www.itc-rv.comJIRAH COMPANY(909) 297-1926, www.jirahled.comLED lights are bright and direct. Somepeople might even call them harsh. ITC’sCamarota observed that the top issue facingthe LED lighting industry is going to beconsistency of color. If you have a dozenoverhead lights in a room, you want themto all look the same. Pablo Gonzalez of Optronicssaid the company is developinglights that will have the options of coolwhite, neutral light — more daylight looking— and a warm light, so customers willhave a choice. The bottom line is every RV will be different.LEDs come in wedge base, doubleand single bayonet, peel-and-stick withboth wedge or bayonet connections, andfully integrated replacement fixtures. Someare too bright. Others are too directional. When replacing incandescent bulbs withLED bulbs, the design of the lens and the reflectorare critical if any improvement is tobe obtained. They can be comparatively expensive,so careful selection is important.Replacing incandescent bulbs on theoutside just to lower amp draw and reduceheat may not make any sense for the investment, and in the case of our tail andbrakelights test, offer no light output advantageat all. Life expectancy is moot. Wehave had incandescent 1157 bulbs in ourtravel vehicles for more than 10 years andthey are still burning bright. Should theyfail, replacements are available in everyauto parts store. We even carry a few in ourelectrical repair kit.For some outside applications and formany inside locations, LEDs, when properlyselected, can dramatically lower ampdraw and heat, and often provide morepleasing usable light. Those who are willingto pay the freight will experience a newlevel of brightness that may take some acclimation, but will no doubt increaselongevity and energy efficiency. qK-FOUR SWITCHES(619) 445-4103, www.k-four.netOPTRONICS INC.(800) 364-5483, www.optronicsinc.comQUICK CABLE CORP.(800) 558-8667, www.quickcable.comSTARLIGHTS INC.(800) 883-5444, www.starlightsinc.com58 March 2012 TRAILER LIFE www.trailerlife.comGo To:.comUser GuideContents

By Russ and Ellen SteeleHOW ONECOUPLE TRAVELSWITH THEIRFOUR-LEGGEDCOMPANIONThere’s nothing better than sharing traveling adventures with theones you love, but what happens if the one that you love mosthas four legs and a tail? Sharing the camping lifestyle with Fido,Bowser or Rover isn’t as difficult as it may at first seem, as long as youprepare and adapt accordingly. We’ve always favored large dogs – setters, Labradors, Rottweilersand now a standard poodle. When we purchased our Airstream trailer, however, we didn’t think too much about space for a dog. If we had, there might have been a few more feet added for their comfort. Instead,we’re learning to live with a large dog in a small space normallyoccupied by two humans.TRAILER LIFE March 2012 59Go To:.comUser GuideContents

BIG DOG SMALL TRAILERTri-Valley Developmental, Circle 127 on Reader Service CardWhen we bought the trailer we hada black Rottweiler. It was soon evidentwhere he liked to lay – under the table –as the rug had a ring of black hair thatresisted every removal effort by ourvacuum cleaner. We soon realized thecream-colored rug, or the dog, had togo. We replaced the rug with some engineeredwood flooring, which we wroteabout in Trailer Life some years ago.Now we have a standard poodle, abreed that is welcomed just abouteverywhere, and he does not shed. Realizingthat our new puppy, Harper, wasgoing to be a constant road companion,we started his training early. We wanted Harper to have his spaceand go there when commanded to “findyour bed.” We also placed some emphasison making potty stops on command. The command, “Harper, gopotty,” usually produces the desired results.Well, most of the time. As he maturesthe results are growing more consistent.Traveling often brings many distractions, noises and unusual situations;the more your dog is exposed to thesesituations as a puppy the easier he’ll adjust. We found that taking Harper withus on short trips in the truck has helpedhim adapt to new situations when weare on the road for a long RV trip.Harper has two beds, one in thetruck and one in the trailer. When it’snot possible for him to be in the truck, such as when it’s being repaired or serviced,we take his bed into the waitingroom and he knows that is his space. We are fortunate that the back seatin our crew cab pickup folds flat andmakes a nice platform for Harper. Hehas a harness and we clip it to the hardpoints the manufacturer provides forbaby seats. This keeps Harper safe inthe back seat during hard stops yet al-“One of the reasons so many families haveRVs is because pets are part of the familyand must be considered when traveling.”60 March 2012 TRAILER LIFE www.trailerlife.comGo To:.comUser GuideContents

BIG DOG SMALL TRAILERlows him to come forward for some loveand attention. After a long day on the road, Harperlooks forward to some exercise. While awalk around the RV park is good forboth dogs and owners, we are findingRV parks with dog runs a most welcomeaddition to the parks’ amenities. Theopportunity to run off-leash is a bigbenefit for large dogs in need of exercise. On a recent trip across the country,we discovered one of the nationallyknown RV parks to have recognized theneed for fenced-in dog runs.Heat can be an issue for dogs whentraveling, especially when a 30-amppower source is not available for the RVair conditioner, or the tow vehicle enginebreaks down. We have a smallStanley shop fan that can be directedtoward the dog’s bed in the trailer. Wealso discovered a raised bed called aCoolaroo, which allows airflow underHarper, keeping him much cooler. InTaking Harper for a walk around theNevada County Fair Grounds RV Park Lake.Superchips, Circle 103 on Reader Service Carddamp and muddy campsites it alsogives him a dry place to lie. This is a realblessing for the dog, especially whenthe only other place to lie is on theblacktop or concrete in some campsitesin the summer.Organization is another essential elementof living comfortably in smallspaces with a large dog. Harper has hisown monogrammed canvas tote bag, which includes a collapsible water dish,a bottle of water, small towel, brush, spare leash, bags for potty stops, treats,a 25-foot plastic covered cable withsnaps on both ends and, if need be, ascrew-in auger for anchoring him on agrassy spot while we picnic. During coldand rainy weather we include his raincoatin the tote bag, along with severaldays’ supply of food in resealable plasticbags in case we get stuck somewhere. One concern we had was the availabilityof restaurants that accept dogs.Everyone likes to eat out occasionally, and we hoped traveling with a large dogwould not preclude that enjoyment. Wewere pleasantly surprised to find anumber of eateries with decks and patiosthat welcomed our dog. We recentlyate dinner on the deck of the BoathouseCantina in Salida, Colorado, overlooking the Arkansas River, wherefour dogs lay quietly while their ownersenjoyed a meal al fresco. Many families travel with their dogs, and restaurants and hotels are becomingmore accepting of pets. PERFORMANCECORNER >by Ken FreundBULLY DOG TUNERSFOR GAS ENGINESMany RVers have recently purchased tow vehicles with smaller, lightergasoline engines because of the high fuel costs. After they actually trytowing with these vehicles, however, many wish for more power andtorque. They may also find there are many aftermarket tuning devicesfor turbo-diesel engines, but far fewer for gas engines in the SUVs andlight trucks popular with trailerists.Ford’s F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L V-6 was one such model introducedfor people looking for better mileage than a V-8 typically delivers. TheEcoBoost V-6, when paired with a trailer that matches Ford’s establishedtow rating, does a terrific towing job that would put many V-8sto shame. Naturally, some drivers never believe a stock truck can begood enough and will always want more than already-terrific performance. To meet the perceived needs of those drivers, Bully Dog Technologieshas successfully tuned the 3.5L EcoBoost with horsepowerand torque gains of 42.9 and 55.4, respectively – the best gas tunerresults they’ve ever had. Of equal importance for towing, there aregains across the entire powerband, with average increases of around33 HP and 41 lb-ft of torque.Bully Dog’s GT (or Gauge Tuner) is a plug-in downloader devicethat, besides adding power, allows multiple drivetrain adjustmentsand monitoring. Its customizable gauge setup allows users to chooseany four from 15 different vehicle parameters to monitor simultaneously. The GT can also read (and erase) diagnostic trouble codes, calibratespeedometers (for larger tires or gearing changes) and resetspeed limiters. Also included is a performance testing feature to measureacceleration.Choose between regular and premium tuning and couple theadded power with shift-point modifications, rev-limiterchanges and other download features. If economy is your primary motivator, the GT’s Driving Coach featureteaches users to maximize their vehicle’sfuel economy potential. The GT also has a vehicle safetywarnings feature. In addition to the 2011-2012 Ford F-150 3.5L Eco-Boost, Bully Dog is also releasingnew tuning kits forseveral other new Ford2011-2012 truck applications.Included are: F-150 5.0L, F-150 6.2L, Raptor 6.2L and F-250-F-350 6.2L. Kits are already offered for many popular SUV and pickupapplications, including Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram, Chevrolet/Cadillac/GMCand Ford/Lincoln. For vehicles subject to emissions testing, check with Bully Dog about the product’s current California Air ResourceBoard (CARB) status, as some approvals are pending. BullyDog Technologies, (866) 285-5936, www.bullydog.comHIGHER-TECH VEHICLES COMINGIn 2011, Nevada passed a law authorizing the use of driverless vehicles. This may be a bellwether of things to come, as high-technology systemsthat are being tested or implemented now give us a glimpse ofthe future.Volkswagen has developed a system which allows a driverlessvehicle to navigate through a parking lot or structure, park, and thenreturn later at the entrance when requested by the owner. Lexus isworking on its Driver Monitoring Systems, which employ devices suchas infrared sensors to track eye movements to reduce crashes causedby tired or distracted drivers. Ford is working out how its SYNC systemcan incorporate services such as WellDoc (a cloud-based patientmonitoring system) to monitor drivers’ current health and ability todrive safely.ICOM DEVELOPS FORD BI-FUEL ENGINESAs gasoline prices rise, propane becomes an interesting option.Plus, more than 95 percent of the United States’ propane is domesticallyproduced, further reducing dependence on foreign oil.Icom North America of New Hudson, Michigan, a developerand manufacturer of liquid injection propane systems for vehicles, has earned eight additional U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) certifications for its patented JTG II Propane Liquid Injectionbi-fuel systems. With these certifications Icom can convert Ford 4.6- and 5.4-litergasoline vehicles on E-150, E-250 and E-350 chassis plus Expeditionand Lincoln Navigator SUVs for 2009-12 model years to propane bifuelsystems. Icom’s patented JTG liquid-injection propane mono-fuelsystems already achieved two EPA certifications for Ford 6.8-liter, bifuelE-250, E-350 and E-450 chassis.Icom JTG II bi-fuel systems allow converted vehicles to run onpropane, with gasoline as a backup for extended range. The 10EPA certifications Icom has covered almost 50 popular Ford lighttruckplatforms and Icom is working on additional certificationsfor other popular models. INFLATION AWARENESSHOPKINS NVISION WIRELESS MONITORING SYSTEM KEEPS TABS ON TIRE PRESSUREOne of the most important topics for RV safety relates directlyto our tires. Without good tires, we’re likely to experience failureson the road that not only keep us waiting for roadside assistancebut also possibly causing expensive collateral damagein the process. Hopkins created the nVision Tire Pressure MonitoringSystem (TPMS) a few years back and has improved theproduct so it’s even better at informing the driver of low tirepressure, which can lead to hazardous driving conditions.Installation is so simple that anyone can do the job. Themanufacturer’s instruction manual is straightforward and easyto understand. Before starting the installation, be certain that all of yourtires, including the spare, are inflated to the required pressure. It’s best to check inflation and install the nVision TPMS in themorning. The most accurate pressure information is establishedwhen tires are cold.To begin activating the TPMS, the pivoting antenna is installedon the receiver that will eventually be mounted in thecab of the tow vehicle. For this project, we plugged the Quick-Set installation cord with the 9-volt battery attached into thebase unit. This unique feature allows portability of the unit sothe user can quickly and effectively install each individual tirepressure sensor. The unit is later plugged into the 12-volt DCaccessory port in the dash.Programming the system is simple. The first step is to turnon the base unit with all the sensors in your hand. The screenwill show “Define Mode” which allows you to select wheel configuration.Press the arrow keys to scroll through the tire optionsto find and select the proper application for your tow vehicleand/or trailer and press OK. The front left tire readout willbegin flashing; install the first sensor on that tire. Wait for thecorrect pressure to appear and press OK. The monitor will advanceto the next sensor location. Repeat the same steps for allof the tires. Once you have installed each of the sensors, scrollto save the information and again press OK.The system can be used to monitor as many as 24 tires simultaneouslyand programmed for up to four different vehiclecombinations for true portability. The monitor reads real-timetire pressure and has warning lights that activate when pressureis 12.5 and 25 percent below normal.> HANDSONtext and photos by Dave RiggsThe nVision TPMS comes with the monitor, pivoting antenna, nonskid pad, 12-volt-DC power cord, Quick-Set cord andfour tire sensors. Retail price is $300, but check the Internet forbetter deals. It’s best to order an additional wheel sensor for use on thespare tire. Too often the spare is out of sight and out of mind, and ends up inflated improperly when needed. Two additionalsensors retail for $100.With tire pressure awarenessand security comes peace of mind, which in turn allows us to drivesafely. Hopkins nVision TPMS usesthe most sophisticated andadvanced TPMStechnology onthe market andis designed toprovide years ofdependableperformance. qHopkins nVision,(800) 835-0129,www.nvisionsafety.com64 March 2012 TRAILER LIFE www.trailerlife.comGo To:.comUser GuideContents

RV CLINIC >Advice from our Tech TeamSLIDE LUBRICATIONWe have a 2003 Cougar fifth-wheel trailerwith a 12-foot slideout. Some of myfriends have said that the slide needs regularlubrication. Others say not to lube it.What's the scoop on this? My slide mechanismis not the notched rail type. It is thesmooth round rail type. Can you pleasehelp me solve this dilemma?Ron BarillaroPenticton, British ColumbiaGenerally, the argument to not lubricateslideouts is based on the fact that lubricantstend to catch and hold dirt and grit. However, proper maintenance is neededto ensure reliable operation. Slideoutsneed two kinds of lubrication. The tracksand sliding mechanism should be lubricatedwith a product like Protect-All Slide-OutDry Lube. This dries, leaving a lubricantthat will not attract dust and dirt. It alsoserves as a rust inhibitor to protect thetracks. All slideouts should also receiveregular treatment of the rubber sealinggaskets and wipers, such as Protect-AllSlide-Out Rubber Seal Treatment, orequivalent. Do this every two months duringuse and again before you store it, andafter you prep your rig for the spring. Thishelps keep the rubber flexible. – Ken FreundWINTERIZING WOESI have a 34-foot Jayco Designer that worksgreat except for the water system. I am nota big fan of the new control boards for directingwater inflow and winterizing. Theproblems I have are that I can’t get to thewater to bypass the water heater, and thepump will not pick up the antifreeze toclean out the pipes. I bypass the antifreezemethod by blowing out the lines but I havea real concern on sanitizing the unit in thespring since I can’t pump a cleaner into thelines.“All slideouts should alsoreceive regular treatmentof the rubber sealinggaskets and wipers, suchas Protect-All Slide-OutRubber Seal Treatment,or the equivalent.”I spoke to the dealer and he advisedme to flip the intake washer since thepump was not strong enough to pull theantifreeze. I did this and it still will notpump the antifreeze. Would it help to takethe intake washer completely out? Anysuggestions would be appreciated. Likeothers, it’s hard to find the time and it’s alot of trouble to take a unit back to thedealer (the dealer is 100 miles away).Bill McCraw, via emailIs your control board manual or automatic? If it has a series of valves that you need toadjust for a given water flow setup – i.e.,filling with fresh water, running on citywater, winterizing, etc. – the valve labelsmay not be right. A trip to your Jayco dealershipservice department could verify thisproblem and produce a solution. If the systemis automated and controlled byswitches, the same solution applies. Youdidn’t say what year your trailer was built, but we’ve seen mislabeled and misalignedKen FreundJeff JohnstonTo send your questions to RV Clinic, write to2575 Vista Del Mar, Ventura, CA 93001; ore-mail RVClinic@trailerlife.com. No phone calls.water flow valves on all kinds of RVs so thiswould be a likely place to start looking. When you say “pull the antifreeze,” doyou mean you use the RV’s short, separate“winterizing” hose and a specific valvesetting to draw antifreeze from the gallonjug and then pump it through the system?Antifreeze is a low-viscosity fluid anddraws easily using the RV’s pump. If thevalving is correct, the pump would havezero problems with the antifreeze, althougha loose fitting would produce anair leak that would reduce the pump’s abilityto pull the liquid. If the pump operatesfine otherwise and you have no water systemproblems, I’d look at the valves as thecause and the solution. – Jeff JohnstonTILTING SLIDEOUTSI have been reading your column for awhile and appreciate the time you guystake to give people the right answers totheir questions. Now I have one for you;hopefully it will be easy. I have a 2009Fleetwood Formula fifth-wheel with twoslideouts. The slides seem to be tilted inwardfrom the top too much, in my opinion. As the top of the slide touches the side ofthe trailer there are about 2.5 inches at thebottom that need to be drawn in yet. Thefloor of the slide inside the trailer kicks upabout 2 inches as the bottom is drawn in.I looked to see if there is an adjustment butall I can see is a control to adjust alignmentup and down but nothing to adjust the tilt.I called a few of the local Milwaukee, Wisconsin-area RV dealers about my concernand I was basically told they don’t handleFleetwood anymore. I would think the84 March 2012 TRAILER LIFE www.trailerlife.comGo To:.comUser GuideContents

manufacturer would not make a difference, because a slide is a slide. How muchtilt should there be? Is there an adjustmentI can make to reduce the tilt or is the tilt correct?John Pauley, Milwaukee, WisconsinMost slideout rooms are designed so theycontact the top edge first when beingdrawn into the travel position. That’s becausethe top edge is the first line of defenseagainst leaks. As the room comesclosed the rest of the way with the top edgein place, the top is really tight. This helpsensure the rest of the seal will come tightas the bottom is drawn in. And it’s perfectlynormal for the inside edge of the room tokick up a bit as this happens. There aremany different slideout room mechanisms, and this is how some of them work.Incidentally, the dealer who passed onworking on your trailer must have beenhaving a really good year and didn’t needany more business. Your trailer is out ofwarranty anyway, and any qualified RVservice center should be able to addressyour concerns about your slideout or anyother mechanical problem. I’d suggest youlook around for a dealership that takes asomewhat more professional approach tocustomer service. – J.J.WATER PUMP CYCLINGWhen dry camping, my 12-volt DC waterpump cycles about every 10 minutes. I’vechecked every inch of the water linestwice and cannot find a leak. I assumethere is some sort of pressure regulator.Could that be the problem, and where isit located?Steve Rammler, Sandpoint, IdahoA one-way valve is part of the pump’s internalmechanism, Steve. You didn’t sayhow old your RV is, but if the valve componentsare damaged because of age orare simply worn out, or the housingscrews are loose, the valve will allow thedownstream pressure that’s built up toslowly bleed off upstream of the pump. That could readily account for the 10-minute pump cycling process you’ve observed.Note the brand and model of yourwater pump and check with your local RVparts store for a pump repair kit. Most arepretty easy to install and doing so, providedthe rest of the system is leak-free,will probably cure your cycling problem. –J.J.50-AMP OR 30-AMP?A friend of mine has a 38-foot Grand Junctionthat’s equipped with a 50-amp servicecord and plug. She has the opportunityto work at a park that only has 30-ampservice. Is there a workaround for this?Rocky Malone, Conway, ArkansasBy “workaround” I’m guessing you mean away to use her 50-amp-wired RV in a parkwith 30-amp hookups. Connecting to shorepower is no problem; you just use a 50-to-30amp adapter available at most RV accessoryand hardware stores. However, that doesn’tmean she has a full 50 amps of power available. She just has 30 amps of power whenusing such an adapter. If “workaround” in thiscase means getting 50 amps of power fromthe 30-amp service, then no, it can’t be done. There’s a limited amount of blood in thattomato. – J.J.B&W Trailer Hitches, Circle 102 on Reader Service CardTRAILER LIFE March 2012 85Go To:.comUser GuideContents

10-MINUTETECHA compilation of tried-and-true tips From RVersLEASH TENDER>With proper use of bungee cords, a littlerope and a retractable dog leash, youcan create a leash tender that hangsfrom your RV’s awning. Hook shortbungee cords into the hole on the end ofeach side of the awning tube. Next, stretch a rope between the bungee cordsto determine the proper length for an appropriatelevel of tension, then attachthe rope by creating looped ends. Nowhang a third bungee – this one withd-ring ends – from the rope. Attach a retractableleash to the other end of thatbungee. Now attach the pooch to the retractableleash. This gets the leash offthe ground and the rope and bungeecords can remain in place when theawning is retracted, though the contraptionshould be removed for travel.Greg Izor, Escondido, CaliforniaBUILD A STOP>The drawers in our trailer had poor stops, so we made our own. Make a woodstop that’s a little smaller than an Oreo cookie – big enough to secure the upperand lower drawers when in place, but small enough where it can be rotated outof the way. Drill a small hole through the face of the frame between the drawers. Then, from the inside, push a 2-inch screw through the hole, and secure itwith a nut on the outside. Next, thread the wood stop onto the screw. Once inplace, you can place the stop in the open or locked position by rotating it at90-degree angles.Pat Elliot, Vacaville, California>MAKE YOUR MARKMany RVs have limited space around the bed, whichcan make changing sheets or adding blankets timeconsuming. To get it right the first time, place a smallmark with a permanent marker or a couple of stitchesof contrasting thread at the center-top and center-bottomof your sheets or blankets. This will help you positionyour bedding in the center of the bed andlessen multiple trips around the bed to get the sheetsor blankets on straight.Jo-Ann Soden, Pahrrump, NevadaINSTANT TUB>Here’s a tip on what to do if the toddler-aged grandkids are coming to campfor a couple of weeks. Many times kids that age don’t like the shower, butmost trailers don’t have a tub – so how do you keep them clean? Take thedrain stopper from the kitchen sink and use it in the shower to create a shallowtub. The kids will love it.Sue McGartland, Livingston, TexasIllustrations by Bill TiptonTo send your submission, write to 3300 Fernbrook Lane N, Suite 200, Minneapolis, MN 55447. AMERICA’SOUTBACK >by Bill GravesDOOR PENINSULA,WISCONSIN“YOU’VE GOT TO ADMIRE PEOPLEWHO MARCH TO THE DRUMMERTHEY HEAR.”Middle America is normally not a placewhere some people think to look for lighthouses. But with coastlines on both LakeSuperior and Lake Michigan, Wisconsinhas more than 50 of them; at least 33 are still operating. The first lighthouses were built on the Great Lakes in the1820s. By 1900 there were 344 of them. New technology hasgreatly lessened their importance for ship captains now navigatingthe Lakes. But on a black and stormy night, when onboardelectronics fail, those shore-based lights may be theonly aids left for a skipper to find his way.In northeastern Wisconsin, the 300-mile shoreline of theDoor Peninsula once had 13 lighthouses. For many earlymariners, the lighthouses did not come soon enough, as this80-mile-long peninsula is skirted by rocky shoals draped withthe remains of many a wooden-hulled ship.Ten lighthouses are still operating. One, open to the public,is on Cana Island, joined to the mainland by a causeway.Built in 1869, it has a circular staircase that every lightkeeperhere – or maybe his wife – surely cursed at one time or another.Twice a day somebody had to climb its 102 steps. The lightwas originally fueled by lard or whale oil, then kerosene andthen acetylene. It was finally lit by electricity in 1945.Dwight Zeller, the assistant site manager, explained thatmost coastal lights are now beacons like they use at airports. But here they still use the original Fresnel lens that was madein France. It has circular prisms that gather andbend the light, causing it to converge into a powerfulbeam. At 85 feet above water level, it can beseen as far away as 18 miles.“How do ya’ clean it?” I asked.“We use a one-to-one mix of distilled water andalcohol with a few drops of Woolite,” he said, thenlooked at me curiously. “That’s a rare question.”“What’s a common one?”“Let’s see ... probably about ghosts in thelighthouse,” he said. “I tell them no ghosts yet,but we have some on back order.”Lighthouses and rusticcamping define DoorPeninsula for some. Forothers, it’s enjoying asummer breeze off thelake and a root beerfloat at Wilson’s IceCream Parlor – a staplefor more than 100 years.Dwight showed me the light source – a 200-watt bulbthat’s mounted on a rack of four bulbs.“If one goes out, the rack automatically rolls and a newbulb slips in to replace the bad one,” he said.Driving across the peninsula to the bay side, I passed a driveintheater that dates to 1950. It’s still showing movies every nightin the summer. And there’s an undisturbed osprey’s nest spreadingover the top of a cellphone tower, and a restaurant with a sodroof. You’ve got to admire people who march to the drummerthey hear. One more thing: no fast-food restaurants here – DoorCounty has worked hard to keep the chains out.The place survives on tourists and summer residents. Beforeroads were built in the 1930s, steamships made overnighttrips here in the summer carrying vacationers from Chicago.I stopped in Ephraim, the only “dry” town in Wisconsin. Some residents have twice tried to change that. The last timewas in 1991. They voted to keep the no-alcohol ordnance by a75 percent plurality – again, that drummer. Not only can younot buy booze here, I discovered that you can’t buy milk oreggs either. No law against it, just geography. There’s no grocerystore in town. But you can get world-class root beer floats at Wilson’s IceCream Parlor. Roy and Diane Elquist run it,helped by their children and other kids. Roymakes fresh root beer every other day.“The secret is in the serving of it,” Roysaid. “Our root beer comes out of the tap at 32degrees.”Try that on a hot day in August – best at sunset.Welcome to America’s Outback. qBill’s email address: roadscribe@aol.com.Next month Bill will be in Knoxville, Tennessee.90 March 2012 TRAILER LIFE www.trailerlife.comGo To:.comUser GuideContents
