FLEET CAPTAINANDY CIUPAKMay was a great month for boating. For one, the docks are completeand many boaters are enjoying their new wells. The Pub Crawlwas another success and many of us got a real flavor of the energyand uniqueness that is Detroit. Thanks again to Shelley Murphy andher team on selecting the establishments we visited. It was a blast. We have one rendezvous scheduled in June. That is for theSandbar on the Puce River in Canada, June 22 - 24 th . The Sandbaris owned by one of our fellow DYC members Robert Troup, and healways has something special planned for our group. Last year Roberttook the group to his steakhouse (the RyeGate in Tecumseh, ON) onSaturday night. This year John Tompkins is coordinating with Robert, and it is sure to be another good one, complete with the popular BloodyMary Bar & breakfast on Sunday. Live entertainment will also be a staplethroughout the weekend. As usual, you will need a NEXUS or passportfor the trip.Speaking of our border relations there has been more confusionabout how boaters will be affected going back and forth to Canada. The latest discussion is that U.S. boaters must call into CANPASS iftheir boat crosses the international line even if they don't anchor ormake landfall. It is confirmed that this is true however, the enforcementbetween Port Huron and the Detroit River has been inconsistent. Inthis month or July I will contact both border services and see if they areavailable to come down to the Club for a refresher of policy to hopefullyend the confusion. In the meantime, pay close attention on the wateras the rumors of safety enforcement and border crossings have beenconfirmed.Lastly, with July 4 th falling in the middle of the week it is unlikely thatwe will have the CardboardRegatta this year. If there arepeople interested in still havingit, let me or a member ofthe Boating Committee knowas currently we have no onecaptaining the event.I will leave you with nostalgic Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy:"I remember how my great-uncle Jerry would sit on the porch andwhittle all day long. Once he whittled me a toy boat out of a larger toyboat I had. It was almost as good as the first one, except now it hadbumpy whittle marks all over it. And no paint, because he had whittledoff the paint."2012 Detroit Yacht Club Float PlanFROM THE SECRETARYJAMES GIERLACHThis month has been fun in the boardroomwith all the good things happening aroundthe Club, so if you check out CommodoreBarlow's column, he'll have the details listed.Other business conducted included discussingand approving all the new membershipapplications, additional harbor repairsneeded on pilings and structure, generalHouse repairs, maintenance, upkeep, andseasonal work required.Assistant General Manager Bowman haslocked in many visitors to our harbor for bothGrand Prix and Hydroplane weekends. Additionally, we have severalother clubs visiting ours throughout the summer bringing in revenue andallowing us to showcase everything we have to offer. Finally, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to each and everymember that has helped make this Club a better place over the last severalmonths. Pick the project: Lady's locker room, docks, grounds, landscaping, beverage service, and the list goes on, thank you to everyonefor your generous donations of time, money, and expertise. Canyou imagine the parties back then? WOW! It wasn't allthat long ago that we were still over 1,000 members. Weall know that hard economic times managed to distressevery private club in the world, some of the finest Clubsdid not survive. The tenacity of the DYC along with carefulplanning and responsible spending carried the Clubtrough the through years, and here we are today; membershipis on the rise, activity at the Club is intensifyingand the fun factor is steadily climbing. There are several signs that the economy is swingingin the right direction. Now is the time to bolster our membership to assure the futureof our Club for another 144 years. The Membership and Marketing Department isdetermined to bring the membership back to full strength. The vision of theMembership and Marketing Team is to eventually make the DYC the healthiestyacht club in the Great Lakes with a continually growing membership, lots of activitiesfor members to participate in and plenty of events to showcase our wonderfulClub to the public. We hope that each and every member of this Club shares in ourvision and will continue to support our efforts by bringing guests to the Club andhelping potential members get the information that they need to join if they show aninterest.Over the next several weeks the Membership and Marketing Team will be workingon new campaigns and membership drives based on the theme "the DYC forme"; reasons members chose the DYC as their Club. In order to make this campaignas genuine as possible, I am requesting that our DYC members send in abrief e-mail (under 100 words) as to why the DYC is the Club that they chose to join.So think about the reason you believe the DYC is right for you, your family, and yourlife and email it to membership@dyc.com. The best response (as judged by myteam and I) will receive a $50.00 credit to be used for food and beverage or in theDYC boutique, and your short story may get posted in the next copy of the DYCMainsheet. On a side note…I have had a number of DYC members introduce me to guests of theirs who theybelieved to be "prospective members". A number of them did in fact join the clubafter a conversation and brief explanation of the membership process. On the otherhand I have also had a member here tell me that they want me to meet someonethat they think is perfect for the Club and they want me to talk to them. On the wayto meeting this person the member said, "I have been trying to get this guy to joinfor the last three years". Well, I don't think that I can get someone to join in the next15 minutes if they have not been convinced by a friend to join in the last three years.Remember, some people are happy to be a guest of yours at the Club and theyhave no desire to be a member. Then again, sometimes it only takes a simple suggestionto get a guest to join. ALWAYS be inviting friends and guests to join; themore the merrier.Have a terrific day, and I will see you around the Club!CONCERNS, CARES OR COMMENTSYour opinions regarding your experience here at the Detroit Yacht Club areimportant. Please share any concerns or compliments with Margaret Gmeiner(313) 824-1200 x 232. She will direct them to the appropriate department.Whether they are small or large, please feel free to call.EIGHT BELLSMR. James R. ROD & GUN CLUBBILL & COM. DONBull's-eye! Shooting at Double Action Gun Range was a huge success!A sold out event!! Experienced shooters fine tuned their gun handlingskills while those new to the sport trained in gun safety and hadthe opportunity to try out a wide range of handguns -the targets didn'tstand a chance! Following our time at the range, the group gathered atBoddles for food, drink & stories!Walleye Tournament! Fishing teams left the DYC at the crack ofdawn in search of the Big One…it was not an easy search. Teams wererelentless as they combed the waters of the river and Lake St. Clairwithfish hitting the line in only a few areas. Nevertheless, TeamNowicki demonstrated their skill with hook & line by returning to theDYC with a boat load of winning fish - the Nowicki crew claiming both1 st place for Biggest Fish, but also landing the Most Fish! Once again, many thanks to Dan Mallard for spearheading this great annual event.Family Fishing Day! Perhaps our mostimportant event of the summer season! OnSunday, June 10 th Michigan DNR opens all fishingin the Great Lakes - no adult license required(fishing for kids 16 years and younger is alwaysunrestricted). The Rod and Gun Club will providepoles & bait for those who need them. This is the perfect time to bringthe grandkids, young cousins & your child's friends down to the Club.Trophies for the BIG FISH and prizes for all participants. A $5.00 feewill be charged for each participating family.Special Olympics/MOMC Muskie Tournament will be held onTuesday, June 26th. The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club will once againsthost this annual event. Captains, crew and fishermen will first enjoy alight breakfast, arriving at 7:00am. An exciting "shot-gun" start willbegin the tournament with boats returning in the late afternoon for dinnerand auction. This is a very popular event and captains are in shortsupply.Bill Schrader is the contact on this one at pmmmarine@sprynet.comor (313) 622-6271.See you on the water! Com. Don Baker & Bill SchraderWiFi Options at the DYCThe Club has a free WiFi service available to all members. Whenyour device (laptop, tablet, phone) finds available wireless networks, you will see two options for the Club. The free option is labeled "DYC".The passcode for this network is available at the cigar counter to allmembers. The free network will meet most basic needs, including e-mail, basicInternet browsing, and standard work functions. However, many of ourmembers desire the ability to stream video or play intensive onlinegames. In some cases, your work applications may also require a largeramount of bandwidth. For those reasons, the "DYC Premium" networkis another option available to you.For 2012, we are expanding the options available on the premiumnetwork. We listened to your suggestions from last year, and will nowbe offering family plans. The premium accounts are assigned on aone-at-time basis. That means that if you attempt to use your accountin more than one place, you will be "kicking off" the first connection. This was inconvienent for families who wished to share an account. For 2012, the options are as follows:1 Premium Account: $1002 Premium Accounts: $125Family Plan: $150For the family plan, an account will be created for each person listedon your account. GETTING TO KNOW THEDETROIT POWER SQUADRONBY DARA TALERT BROOKSWater is the common denominator when it comes to the Detroit PowerSquadron (DPS) and the Detroit Yacht Club (DYC). Each understands thathere in Michigan we are in a unique position surrounded by one of thegreatest gifts to mankind … water. This love and respect of water is whatbinds us together. So it is no surprise that when in 1936 the DYC becamethe permanent home of the DPS becoming an alliance built on thestrongest of foundations. In 1914 a group of East Coast boaters, including Motor Boating editor andauthor Charles Chapman established a national organization (UnitedStates Power Squadrons®) dedicated to seamanship and safe boating forrecreational boaters. Two years later, a group of Detroit area boaters joinedthe expanding organization and established what is known today as theDetroit Power Squadron. Since then, the USPS® has become the premiersafe boating organization across the United States and territories offeringthe recreational boater support while working closely with the Coast GuardAuxiliary in these efforts.Through this alliance the DPS has educated hundreds of DYC membersthrough safe boating classes and many nonmembers have also enjoyedthe convenience and hospitality of the club while attending classes here.DPS members (many of whom are DYC members) have maintained astrong relationship with the DYC since its inception recognizing that a keyto enjoying the bounty of water around us was education and safety. These classes taught by experienced boaters fall into two classifications,"Advanced Grades" and "Elective Courses" to fit the changing needs ofrecreational boaters. The Advanced Grades include Seamanship, Piloting,Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation and Celestial Navigation. OurElective Courses are designed to round out the boating experience.DPS continues to bring forth products that meet the needs of recreationalboaters, the industry and ever-changing lifestyles. We offer courtesyVessel Safety Checks (VSCs) by certified squadron Vessel SafetyExaminers (VSEs). These checks are designed to inform our recreationalboater of their compliance or noncompliance with maritime regulations. Wealso offer numerous two hour format seminars designed to tune up theboater in areas such as the proper use of flares, understanding how yourPFD works and much more. Complete information is available via our websiteat http://www.detroitpowersquadron.com.These are just some of the fundamentals that have made our relationshipwith the DYC so wonderful but the beauty of our partnership is that ours isone borne of common interests and fueled by respect and camaraderie. And through our mutual rendezvous and numerous social activities, wehave let down our hair and had a good time. Together, our love of boatingand respect for the water is what makes us a winning team!DOCK LINEA Message From Your HarborImprovement CommitteeYour Boat Is In Trouble How Do We Contact You??It Is Important For Us To Be Able To Reach YouPlease Supply The Harbor OfficeWith Your Current Cell Phone NumberHave You Seen The StoreGet Your DYC SS Travel Coffee Mug andDYC Key ChainsBoat Soaps and CleanersPower CordsBaitHARBOR & STORE HOURSJUNE 1, 2012MONDAY - 10:00 am - 8:00 pmTUESDAY - THURSDAY ~ 10:00 am - 9:00 pmFRIDAY - SATURDAY ~ 8:00 am - 10:00 pmSUNDAY ~ 8:00 am - 8:00 pmDon't Forget Our Valet ServiceBoat Not In The Harbor - Coming For The Weekend -Or Special Event Please Make A ReservationPlease Save Energy and WaterPlease Turn Off Your Air Conditioners andHot Water Heater When AwayThe Harbor Rules Are In Place To Enhance Your Experience. This Is A Good Month To Reacquaint Yourself With The RulesPlease Read the 24 Hour RuleHarbor Rules Are In Your MainsheetDYC THE PLACE TO BENEW SHUTTLEHOURS2012 will beginFriday 5:00 pm - 10:00 pmSaturday 1:00 pm - 10:00 pmSunday 11:00 am - 9:00 pmHoliday 11:00 am - 10:00 pmMaps and Marina Information available atwww.keansmarina.com Members can call Kean'sMarina for guest registration, (313) 822-4500.Directions: Jefferson Avenue to Meadowbrook (First StreetEast of Traffic Light at Harding); turn onto Meadowbrook goingtoward the Detroit River; Meadowbrook will take you to theentrance for the Marina; follow instructions once you reachtheir security gate.
