Research Poster PresentationsP O S T E R 2 7Geographical Range Size Relatedto Niche BreadthErica ZitoFaculty Mentor: Professor Lisa ManneDepartment of BiologyNiche breadth measures how tolerant (orintolerant) a species is to a range of conditions.Species’ niche breadth can be measured alongmany different axes (i,e.: temperature, humidity, soilsalinity, etc.), so that species that only tolerate anarrow range of (e.g.) temperature and moistureconditions will be very specialized, and also able tolive in a small number of locations. So: theexpectation is that species with narrow nichbreadths will also have small geographic ranges. I testthis idea with tree species of the northeastern U.S.P O S T E R 3 0The Rape of Nanjing and Sino-Japanese Relations SinceMatthew GregerFaculty Mentor: Dr. Charles LiuDepartment of Engineering Science and PhysicsThe Rape of Nanjing is one of the mostunderrepresented genocides in the history of war. Most people do not know that World War II startedin 1931 for China. There has been considerableeffort to conceal the war crimes and atrocitiescarried out by Japanese soldiers which includedrape, beheading, torture, looting, burying alive, anddismemberment. The goal of my research is toshowcase Sino-Japanese relations since WWII andmore importantly modern relations on the subject. It remains emotionally charged among manyChinese and Japanese to this day, young and old.
