THE STURP TEST PLANThe STURP team spent a year and a halfdesigning a comprehensive battery ofnon-destructive tests that could beperformed in a brief but efficient periodof time. They developed the protocolsfor each experiment, scheduled thetests within the confines of a 96 hourtest period and compiled everythinginto a detailed, 65 page spiral boundnotebook that would not only guide usduring our examination, but would firstbe submitted to Turin for final approval.Permission to examine the Shroud wasgranted to STURP by King Umberto II,Duke of Savoy, the owner of the Shroudin 1978. To assist us in our liaison withthe Church and the Turin Custodians,we also worked closely with the HolyShroud Guild in Esopus, New York.9
