FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORThe YearAheadby WAYNE NOSEWORTHYAs I prepare this article, our 1999-2000 schoolyear is rapidly coming to a close. For the NLTA,this has been an extremely active year, particularlywith events surrounding the Ministerial Panel onEducation, the preparations for collective bargaining, andundertakings related directly to the four major priorityareas of your Association. Overall, I believe we have hada very successful year. The Ministerial Panel, in its conclusions, identified with many of the proposals that yourAssociation placed before it. The challenge ahead for theNLTA is to see that those positive recommendations areimplemented by the provincial government and to strivefor improvements with government respecting the conclusionsreached by the Ministerial Panel that either didnot meet our objectives or went in somewhat differentdirections. The NLTA is represented on the implementationcommittee with our other partners in education andwill be actively involved in that context for the balance of2000 and throughout the next school year.It is my expectation that the 2000-2001 NLTA yearwill be dominated by issues surrounding collective bargaining.I anticipate that we will be at the table in theFall, striving to realize a new contract to take effect atthe expiry of the current collective agreement inSeptember 2001.I congratulate you for your contributions to the educationof our students during the past year; I thank youfor your continued involvement and support of theNewfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association, andI look forward with much enthusiasm to working withyour dedicated team at 3 Kenmount Road in realizingthe Association’s objectives in the coming year.Have a great summer. I willsee you in the Fall.ALERT TO TEACHERSRe: Upgrading and CertificationAt this time of the year many people are planning to spend theirsummer recess attending educational programs for the purpose ofupgrading their teaching certification level.
