ON LOCATIONHAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAYStudents acquire enterprising skillsGrade 4 students from Peacock Elementary School inHappy Valley-Goose Bay participated in a career awareness/enterpriseeducation project in February titled “LeapInto the Future”. This career-focused event was sponsoredby the Peacock Elementary Special EventsCommittee as part of the school’s Self <strong>and</strong> Society focusyear.The five Grade 4 classes surveyed the school forcareer interests, prepared <strong>and</strong> delivered telephone invitations<strong>and</strong> follow-up calls, acted as greeters <strong>and</strong> go-fors<strong>and</strong> ensured that all visitors were thanked. Classesrotated from room to room in each hallway <strong>and</strong> heardpresentations on a variety of careers.Margaret Saunders <strong>and</strong> Sue Howell, classroom teachers<strong>and</strong> members of the Special Events Committee, saythe Grade 4 students participated <strong>and</strong> learned skills fromthe “enterprise” aspect of the event. “All students <strong>and</strong>staff learned/were exposed to a variety of career opportunities<strong>and</strong> the community at large became our school.”To view clips of this event, check out the school’sweb site at www.k12.nf.ca/peacock/99-<strong>2000</strong>.htm.MOUNT PEARLStudents benefit fromFuture Frontiers programThis past February, Morris Academy in Mount Pearlwas awarded a new personal computer through theFuture Frontiers Program offered by Ontario basedIngram Micro, a wholesale provider of technology products<strong>and</strong> services.Students from Brenda Woodman’s Grade 2 class at Morris Academy proudlysit in front of their new Compaq Presario PC.Brenda Woodman says she <strong>and</strong> her Grade 2 studentsare excited to have received a Compaq Presario PC 5827<strong>and</strong> an MV520 monitor along with an assortment ofsoftware from Ingram Micro on behalf of the FutureFrontiers program. Last year, teacher Jennifer Vincent ofMorris Academy received a Pentium PC from theFuture Frontiers program.Both Brenda <strong>and</strong> Jennifer had to complete a detailedapplication telling how they would integrate technologyinto their class curriculum. Ms. Woodman <strong>and</strong> Ms.Vincent are currently the only teachers in the provinceto have been successful with their applications.POUCH COVEStudents cook up some funon Pancake Day“I’d give that teacher a piece of my mind if I could afford it.”On March 7, students <strong>and</strong> teachers of St. Agnes School inPouch Cove presented various activities during a schoolwide assembly to celebrate Pancake Day. “Our schoolhas provided a Pancake unit that may benefit otherschools as they celebrate Pancake Day,” says HeatherRinger, Special Education teacher at St. Agnes School.Kindergarten students cooked up a little pancake funwith a song entitled “We Are Little Pancakes” adaptedto the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”.
