eHOCKEY CLuB PERSONNELASSOCIATE COACHJimPLAYFAIRJim Playfair is entering his second season as an Associate Coach with theFlames. As the Flames Head Coach in 2006-07, Playfair guided the Flamesto a 43-29-5-5 record and the team’s third consecutive playoff appearance.Playfair was originally named Assistant Coach with the Flames on January 3,2003. During his time as an assistant, the Flames posted a 105-73-25-4 recordand an 18-15 post season record.Playfair was named Head Coach of the Saint John Flames on August 10,2000 and spent three seasons with Calgary’s primary development club ofthe American Hockey League. During the 2000-01 season, his first behindthe bench in Saint John, Playfair led the Flames to their first AHL Calder Cupchampionship and was named Minor Professional Coach of the Year by TheHockey News. Over the course of his tenure, Saint John posted an 83-77-22-10 record.Prior to joining the Flames organization, Playfair was the Head Coach ofthe Michigan K-Wings of the International Hockey League. He served as anAssistant Coach with the K-Wings for three seasons before being namedHead Coach on January 25, 2000. His other head coaching experienceincludes three seasons as bench boss of the Dayton Bombers of the EastCoast Hockey League.The 43-year old native of Fort St. James, BC played nine seasons of professional hockey including 21 gamesin the <strong>NHL</strong> with Edmonton and Chicago. Playfair was Edmonton’s first choice, 20th overall, in the 1982 <strong>NHL</strong>Entry Draft. He captained the Indianapolis Ice (IHL) to the 1990 Turner Cup championship but was forced toretire from playing due to a retina injury suffered during the 1991-92 campaign. As a junior, Playfair performedwith the Portland Winterhawks for two seasons capturing a Memorial Cup in 1983 before concluding his juniorcareer as a member of the Calgary Wranglers in 1984. Jim and his wife Roxanne have three boys: Dylan (16),Jackson (14) and Austyn (11).ASSISTANT COACHRichPRESTONThis will be Preston’s fifth consecutive season as the Flames Assistant Coachafter rejoining the organization on June 26, 2003. The Regina, SK native waspreviously with the Flames, along with Head Coach Brian Sutter, from 1997-2000 and helped the Flames increase its point totals in each of those seasons.With the San Jose Sharks (2000-02) as an Assistant Coach under Head CoachDarryl Sutter, Preston also saw his team improve its point totals each year.Prior to coaching with Calgary and San Jose, Preston spent two seasons(1995-96 and 1996-97) as Head Coach of his hometown, Regina Pats ofthe WHL. During this period the Pats <strong>com</strong>piled a 79-60-5 record. With 42wins registered in the 1996-97 season, the Pats managed their first 40 winseason in 11 years and also established a new team record 27 home gameundefeated streak.Preston began his coaching career with the Chicago Blackhawks during the1991-92 campaign and spent four seasons with the team. He worked as anAssistant Coach to Mike Keenan during the 1991-92 season, and to DarrylSutter from 1992-95.Preston played in eight <strong>NHL</strong> seasons from 1979-87 with the ChicagoBlackhawks and the New Jersey Devils and in five seasons in the WorldHockey Association with the Houston Aeros and Winnipeg Jets. In 13 professional seasons he recorded 576points including 260 goals in 963 career games, winning the WHA Championship with Houston in 1975 and withWinnipeg in 1979. He was named Playoff MVP in 1979 with the Jets.Preston and his wife Laura have three boys, Troy, Lucas and Thomas and reside in Calgary.16 CALGARY FLAMES
