A copy <strong>of</strong> this IMO Circular is attached for easy reference.The Approved Method is certified for engines with a Maximum Continuous Rating(MCR) <strong>of</strong> between 2,530 – 2,810 kW/cylinder and a speed between 81 – 91 rpm asper Annex <strong>of</strong> Circular MEPC.1/Circ.738.As per <strong>MARPOL</strong> <strong>VI</strong>/<strong>13.7</strong>.1, the above mentioned regulation is mandatory for marinediesel engines with a power output <strong>of</strong> more than 5,000 kW and a per cylinderdisplacement <strong>of</strong> 90 litres or more installed on a ship constructed on or after 1 January1990 but prior to 1 January 2000,which must comply with the emission limits set forthin subparagraph <strong>13.7</strong>.4 <strong>of</strong> this paragraph, provided that an Approved Method for thatengine has been certified by an Administration <strong>of</strong> a Party and notification <strong>of</strong> suchcertification has been submitted to the Organization by the certifying Administration.As the Administration <strong>of</strong> Denmark notified the certification <strong>of</strong> the approved method forengines mentioned above on 5 October 2010, application <strong>of</strong> the method for suchengines (irrespectively <strong>of</strong> Flag) will be mandatory no later than the first renewal surveyfor International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate, which will take place on or after 6October 2011(as per <strong>Regulation</strong> <strong>MARPOL</strong> <strong>VI</strong>/<strong>13.7</strong>.2), subject to commercialavailability.For any questions concerning the content <strong>of</strong> this Circular, interested parties maycontact:Kyllinis Street, Mesa Geitonia, 4007 Lemesos, Postal Address: P.O.Box 56193, 3305 Lemesos, CyprusTelephone: +357 25848100, Telefax: +357 25848200E-mail: maritimeadmin@dms.mcw.gov.cy, Web page: http://www.shipping.gov.cy

T5/1.01MEPC.1/Circ.73819 October 2010INFORMATION ON AN APPROVED METHOD UNDER <strong>MARPOL</strong> <strong>ANNEX</strong> <strong>VI</strong>Communication received from theAdministration <strong>of</strong> Denmark1 In accordance with the provisions <strong>of</strong> regulation <strong>13.7</strong>.1 <strong>of</strong> <strong>MARPOL</strong> Annex <strong>VI</strong>,a communication has been received from the Administration <strong>of</strong> Denmark concerningcertification <strong>of</strong> an approved method for marine diesel engines. The details are annexedhereto, and hereby circulated to Parties to <strong>MARPOL</strong> Annex <strong>VI</strong> and Member States <strong>of</strong> theOrganization for information and appropriate action.2 It should be noted that, for marine diesel engines with a power output <strong>of</strong> morethan 5,000 kW and a per cylinder displacement at or above 90 litres installed on a shipconstructed on or after 1 January 1990 but prior to 1 January 2000, installation <strong>of</strong> anapproved method is required if the approved method for that engine has been certified by anAdministration <strong>of</strong> a Party, or alternatively, for such engines, certification as provided for underregulation <strong>13.7</strong>.1.2 <strong>of</strong> <strong>MARPOL</strong> Annex <strong>VI</strong>.3 As the Administration <strong>of</strong> Denmark notified the certification <strong>of</strong> the approved methodfor engines specified in the annex to this circular on 5 October 2010, installation <strong>of</strong> themethod for such engines will be mandatory no later than the first renewal survey forInternational Air Pollution Prevention Certificate, which occurs on or after 6 October 2011,subject to commercial availability.4 Member Governments are invited to bring this circular to the attention <strong>of</strong> theirAdministrations, relevant shipping organizations, recognized organizations, shippingcompanies and other stakeholders, and encourage them to take action as appropriate.***I:\CIRC\MEPC\01\738.doc
