innovatorVolume: 1 I January - March 2013Interesting Articles - by NTTF staff / facultyGAS ASSISTED INJECTION MOULDINGThink of a thick plastic component with surprisinglylighter weight as compared to its volume and thesize, you will be amazed to make out that how itis such a light weighing component? Thanks to thetechnology; it happens from an interesting processcalled Gas assisted Injection moulding! Normally, the injection moulding of thick sections are difficultdue to visible shrinkage marks. Also cost of thicksection parts will be very high. The solution to thisis the gas-assisted injection moulded parts. The principle of this process is that nitrogen gasis injected, during the moulding cycle, eitherthrough the sprue or directly into the mould tool.At a controlled high pressure this has the benefitof overcoming sink marks or introducing a cavitywithout the requirement of a core.Benefits of Gas Assisted Injection Moulding• Reduced material requirements• Reduced cycle times• Reduced wear on moulds• Improved component qualityIn the gas assist molding process, the plasticmaterial is melted and injected into the moldcavities via the conventional plastic injectionmolding process. Plastic material in contact withthe mold walls begins to solidify first. As thishappens, nitrogen gas is injected into the moldthrough strategically designed and placed gaschannels, providing pressure that pushes theplastic material into the mold extremities.Stages in Gas Injection MouldingStage 1 : Injection of the meltStage 2 : Gas Injection & subsequentFollow-up PressureStage 3 : Venting and part releaseAnil V BhideDy.
