Der RÜCKSPIEGELReprinted from DTE Energy Quest NewsChip Holst, principal account manager, Industrial Accounts. Photo by MarkHoustonA lot of people who have hobbies talkabout their gardening or book clubactivities. But if you ask Chip Holst, principal account manager, IndustrialAccounts, about his "leisure" hours, you won't get any stories about gardenmulch or the latest Alex Cross thriller.Holst is a part-time race car instructorwho spends most of his free time driving- fast.Recently featured in a Detroit Newsarticle, Holst gave a half-dozen media"thrill rides at speeds 40 mph slowerthan NASCAR's stock cars will runwhen they race on the newlyimprovedMichigan InternationalSpeedway (MIS) track in Brooklyn,Mich."Reporter Doug Guthrie said:"The retired NASCAR racing pickuptruck roared like a 150 mph rollercoasteraround the towering asphaltbowl that is Turn 3 at Michigan InternationalSpeedway. A $7 million repavingof the two-mile tri-oval - unveiledand tested for the first time inNovember - clung to the truck's Goodyears'like glue. Multiplying forces ofgravity pressed me against the passengerdoor, toward the white cementwall and empty grandstands at the topof the turn. And then, I felt a wobble12

and watched driver Chip Holst'shands make a quick and large correctionwith the steering wheel. That'salso when I noticed a tiny, gold crucifixScotch-taped to the truck's instrumentpanel."Holst, who has been involved in somesort of motorsports for most of his life, said, "It was just a wind gust. The newsurface has surprisingly more gripthan I expected. It's smooth and it'sgoing to be very fast." Holst hasturned thousands of laps over the lastfew years with the Brooklyn-basedMach 1 Racing School.January 2012Prior to MIS, Holst began his drivingcareer in the 1980s through road racingwith the Porsche Club of Americaand the Sports Car Club of America. He was part of the Porsche Pit Crew atthe 24-hours of Daytona. Holst was aninstructor for the Porsche Club, andhas also worked for auto manufacturersduring "Ride and Drives," wherejournalists are able to drive all thenewest vehicles. A lot of these Rideand Drives are held at MIS."Roger Penske owned the place,"Holst said about his early days."About the same time, Richard Pettystarted up stock car experienceschools." By 1994, Penske opened hisown school, with Holst getting plentyof "seat time" driving at that level. Now, Holst spends most of his summerweekends driving the track."It helps me stay sharp," Holst says,"and the more seat time I get, the morecomfortable I am."Asked if he has received many speedingtickets, Holst says, "No, I get it outof my system (the need for speed)because the regular road is just fractionof what I can do on an opencourse."In 1992, Chip Holst was featured in a Detroit Edison Today articleabout teaching police to drive safely.13
