OverviewThe Doctor of Philosophy (<strong>PhD</strong>) <strong>in</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Adm<strong>in</strong>istrationis designed to meet the development needs of bus<strong>in</strong>essleaders, experienced managers and professionals who wishto pursue advanced studies and research <strong>in</strong> an area ofsignificance to bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istration.The <strong>PhD</strong> <strong>in</strong>volves <strong>in</strong>itial coursework subjects and thesisresearch which develop the capacity of candidates to analyze,critique, synthesize and to develop knowledge.The Bulacan State University (BSU) <strong>PhD</strong> is unique <strong>in</strong> the sensethat it is conducted bil<strong>in</strong>gually, and the candidates may optto write their thesis and attend the oral defense <strong>in</strong> eitherCh<strong>in</strong>ese or <strong>in</strong> English but candidates must prepare an Englishversion as the ma<strong>in</strong> submission and if need be, hire an English<strong>in</strong>terpreter dur<strong>in</strong>g oval defense (at the candidate’s ownexpenses). The <strong>PhD</strong> degree can be completed overseas.Course AimsThe aim of the <strong>PhD</strong> program is to enhance candidates’capacity, through advanced coursework and research, tobecome aware of the relationship between research and theirprofessional activities <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istration.Throughout the program, <strong>PhD</strong> candidates are expected to makea dist<strong>in</strong>ct contribution to knowledge of bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istrationwhether by orig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>vestigation, review or criticism.Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able topromote the extension of knowledge and research to serve anddevelop new and better practices <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istration.Recognition of BSU DegreeAll BSU undergraduate and postgraduate programs are dulyrecognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) ofthe Republic of the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es.<strong>PhD</strong> is a prestigious and respectable academic award. Oncompletion of the degree, graduates will be entitled to usethe title “Dr” before their names.Course StructureThe <strong>PhD</strong> degree is built on a 60-credit po<strong>in</strong>t structure compris<strong>in</strong>gtwo components, i.e. coursework and thesis research.1


Coursework RequirementThe coursework component comprises 48 credit po<strong>in</strong>ts whichare made up of core courses, major courses and electives.Candidates with an <strong>in</strong>sufficient background <strong>in</strong> researchmethods and / or theoretical knowledge <strong>in</strong> the core fields ofstudy are required to undertake <strong>in</strong>itial coursework subjects.Candidates with appropriate prior learn<strong>in</strong>g history may applyfor exemption from part of the courses.ThesisThe doctoral thesis research and development will beundertaken after the coursework subjects have beencompleted. The thesis counts as 12 credit po<strong>in</strong>ts.The thesis subject requires candidates to prepare asubstantial research thesis of 20,000 - 25,000 words. Thesis Oral Exam<strong>in</strong>ationThe assessment for the <strong>PhD</strong> degree is based on satisfactorycompletion of prescribed coursework and doctoral thesis/dissertation.Assessment of coursework is through assignments on acont<strong>in</strong>uous basis OR exam<strong>in</strong>ation, e.g. through the thesisresearch proposal which is required to be submitted oncompletion of the coursework component.Upon submission of the thesis/dissertation, the candidate shallbe required to present himself/herself for a thesis/dissertationexam<strong>in</strong>ation normally to take place <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>, conductedby the Thesis Defense Panel appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the University.The candidate shall be required to complete satisfactorily theoral exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> order to satisfy the requirements for the<strong>PhD</strong> degree. Theses exam<strong>in</strong>ation will be arranged after am<strong>in</strong>imum of two years of study period.Language of StudyThis be<strong>in</strong>g a bil<strong>in</strong>gual program, candidates may choose towrite their thesis/dissertation <strong>in</strong> the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese language. Thosewho write their thesis/dissertation <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese are required:- to submit together with an English version of the thesis;- to assign an <strong>in</strong>terpreter at the thesis exam<strong>in</strong>ation session athis/her own cost.Period of StudyThe standard duration for a candidate to complete the <strong>PhD</strong>degree is 3 years (6 semesters).The maximum time allowed for a candidate to complete the<strong>PhD</strong> Degree is 5 years (10 semesters). A candidate whowishes to extend candidature must seek permission from theUniversity.Thereafter, the <strong>PhD</strong> Award will be granted upon successfulcompletion of both the coursework components and thesisexam<strong>in</strong>ation of the <strong>PhD</strong> Degree.Mode of StudyThe <strong>PhD</strong> will be delivered by a flexible distance mode whichis implemented through distance learn<strong>in</strong>g and self-directedstudy. Distance learn<strong>in</strong>g materials <strong>in</strong>clude study guides,prescribed textbooks or reference books, read<strong>in</strong>gs and/or e-learn<strong>in</strong>g materials provided by the University Cyber Campus.On top of distance-learn<strong>in</strong>g, offshore doctoral students will beprovided with the follow<strong>in</strong>g supports to facilitate their studies:Intensive Sem<strong>in</strong>arsIntensive sem<strong>in</strong>ars and workshops will be organized for coresubjects to provide a forum for open discussions and<strong>in</strong>terchange of ideas with<strong>in</strong> the class. Study Group Meet<strong>in</strong>gsOut-of-timetable meet<strong>in</strong>gs will be organized for candidateswork<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> common <strong>in</strong>terest group. The meet<strong>in</strong>gs will providea forum for group members to enhance critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g,analysis and synthesis with peers.SupervisionDoctoral candidates who have completed their courseworkwill be allocated a supervisor to support their thesis/dissertation work. Supervision will be provided from theUniversity us<strong>in</strong>g a range of communication technology suchas e-mail. Thesis supervisors <strong>in</strong>clude home academic staff andlocal academics or professionals appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the University.Library SupportsThrough arrangements of the local agency, BSU doctoralstudents can have access to local libraries for researchrequirements, library resources and supports.
