SMU PHD IN GENERAL MANAGEMENTOverviewThis is an intensive and rigorous limited-residencydegree programme specially designed for working SeniorManagement or managers and professionals, to be able toapply what they learn in class in research areas related tothe corporate strategic challenges faced in real life businessissues. The minimum duration of the programme is three years.Most students, however, are expected to take approximatelyfour years to complete the programme. The maximumduration of the programme is seven years, unless specialapproval for a longer duration is granted by SMU.CURRICULUMThe curriculum consists of completing the following:a) Foundation courses,b) Electives,c) Advanced Research Topics (ART) courses,d) a qualifying exam that demonstrates competency over the1 year of coursework,e) an oral proposal of the dissertation research project,f) the completion of an approved PhD dissertation and anoral defense of the dissertation.The coursework and the number of credit units are listed below:COURSEWORK (12 CREDIT UNITS)• Business foundation courses (6 Credit Units)• Advanced Research Topics (ART) Courses (4 Credit Units)• Elective Business Courses (2 Credit Units)• Passing qualifying examination• Oral presentation of dissertation proposalDISSERTATION (28 CREDIT UNITS)The programme also requires the preparation and completionof a PhD dissertation.• Oral defense and completion of PhD dissertationTotal graduation requirement = 40 Credit Units

PhDstudents who have not completed SMU’s EMBA programme willbe required to complete 6 Business foundation courses. This isfollowed by 4 Advanced Research courses and 2 Elective courses.The foundation courses are designed to familiarise students withthe various business domains, their evolution and the currentstate of research and theory in the domain. The research coursesare intended to equip the students with the skills and insight toconduct rigorous research.468contacthours of lectures,seminars or workshopsintensive Resident weeks6over 10 monthsFORMATThe coursework is conducted in the format of Intensive ExecutiveResidential format, consisting of a total of 468 contact hoursof lectures, seminars or workshops, which may be conductedover a period of 6 intensive Resident weeks. Coursework will becompleted over a 10 month period. The typical format of a courseis generally comprised of three phases:PHASE 1 (PRE-WORK)Students are required to complete 9 hours of work beforecoming in to SMU where they are given assignments/projectsto complete and have individual face-to-face/video conferenceconsultation with SMU faculty.PHASE 2 (RESIDENTIAL SEGMENT)Students attend classes of 21 hours per course in SMU in theform of Intensive Residential Format.PHASE 3 (POST SEGMENT APPLICATION)Students are required to complete 9 hours of work aftertheir Intensive Residential Segment where they are givenassignments/projects to complete and have face-to-face/videoconference consultation with SMU faculty.

SMU PHD IN GENERAL MANAGEMENTEach course will be assessed by the instructor, and the method of assessmentmay be a written examination, take-home examination, project or essay.Instructors will give a grade for each section of the course and the final gradewill be based on the overall assessment of the course. Students must pass thecourses to the satisfaction of the instructors.Potential faculty: Singapore Management University has one of the strongestand most diverse faculties in Asia and the world. Hence it is the fastestschool in history to garner AACSB accreditation for both its graduate andundergraduate business programmes.
