<strong>International</strong> <strong>Archive</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong>Archivist’s <strong>Report</strong>September 26, 1998-Sept. 18, 1999This has been a year <strong>of</strong> transitions. The esteemed manuscripts curator, Laura Katz Smith,left <strong>in</strong> March 1999 for the University <strong>of</strong> Connecticut. Her duties were largely assume byan experienced reference and Special Collections librarian, Jan Carlton. The IAWA hasnot suffered under Ms. Carlton's watchful eyes as she updated the mail<strong>in</strong>g database,improved the physical arrangements <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> the collections, handledcorrespondence, and provided excellent services to visit<strong>in</strong>g researchers <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g anunexpected scholar from Germany. She also supervised the current IAWA exhibition <strong>in</strong>the Newman Library lobby. (This will be fully digitized for onl<strong>in</strong>e display.) Ms. Carlton alsoopened the Read<strong>in</strong>g Room Saturday, Sept. 18, by appo<strong>in</strong>tment with the IAWA.AcquisitionsThis year the archive grew with the accession <strong>of</strong> 13 new collections, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g thetotal number <strong>of</strong> IAWA collections to 178. There were also significant additions to fiveexist<strong>in</strong>g collections. With the addition <strong>of</strong> 18 cubic feet, the archive grew from 328 cu. ft.<strong>of</strong> the previous year to 347 cu. ft.The significant donations <strong>in</strong>cluded the Kathleen Cruise papers (7.5 cu. ft.),the Claire Rufer-Eckmann papers (1.4 cu. ft.), Saffa 58 material (0.5 cu. ft.), theBerta Rahm papers (1.0 cu. ft.), the Jean L<strong>in</strong>den Young papers (1.5 cu. ft.), andthe Elisabeth-Charlotte Harl<strong>in</strong>g papers (1 cu. ft. <strong>of</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>gs, site plans, andphotographs via Inge Horton).Smaller new collections <strong>in</strong>clude the Evelyn Chi-Chan Hermann-Chongpapers, books from the Organization <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> Architects and Eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>of</strong>Japan, the papers <strong>of</strong> Ir<strong>in</strong>a Patrulius <strong>of</strong> Romania, a book from Raili Pietila, theAnnemarie Hubacher papers, a brochure from Mojca Svigelj-Cernigoj, and theSarelle T. Weisberg papers. Additions to exist<strong>in</strong>g collections were made to theSilvia Paun papers, the Sena Sekulic-Gvozdanovic papers, the Verena Huberpapers, the Evelyne Lang Jakob papers, and the Heidi Wenger papers.IAWA Advisor Evelyne Lang Jakob brought five new collections and additions t<strong>of</strong>our exist<strong>in</strong>g collections to the archive when she attended last year's Board meet<strong>in</strong>g.Subsequently, Special Collections had two sets <strong>of</strong> slides <strong>of</strong> images from the Berta Rahmcollection made for Ms. Jakob at a cost to the department <strong>of</strong> $180.Among other materials, the Archivist received from Milka Bliznakov 1930s’draw<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Herz Curry, some <strong>of</strong> which are <strong>in</strong> this year's IAWA exhibition <strong>in</strong> thelobby <strong>of</strong> Newman Library. Ms. Carlton processed six acrylic panels <strong>of</strong> Ms. JunkoMatsukawa-Tsuchida, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g "Four Secrets <strong>of</strong> Liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Ag<strong>in</strong>g Society" and"Postwar History <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> Architects <strong>in</strong> Japan." Current copies <strong>of</strong> the Guide to theIAWA Collections were cont<strong>in</strong>uously available at the Special Collections reference desk


for patrons. All ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed the Web copy <strong>of</strong> the guide current on <strong>in</strong>formation aboutIAWA accessions. She processed the Kathleen Cruise papers, theClaire Rufer-Eckmann papers, the Berta Rahm papers, and the Jean L<strong>in</strong>den Youngpapers, along with a additional process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the Han Schroeder collection. She alsoprocessed the IAWA records <strong>of</strong> Milka T. Bliznakov and Smith's own (5 cu. ft.). She addedthree <strong>in</strong>ventories to the Internet, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g the total to n<strong>in</strong>eteen now available onl<strong>in</strong>e.New to the Internet are the <strong>in</strong>ventories <strong>of</strong> Jean L<strong>in</strong>den Young (with images), thecontents list for the IAWA records, the Kathleen Cruise papers, as well as significantadditions to the Han Schroeder <strong>in</strong>ventory.Reference contactsThe Manuscripts Curator's reference contacts <strong>in</strong>creased 33.79% <strong>in</strong> the first sixmonths <strong>of</strong> this year. These contacts were overwhelm<strong>in</strong>gly from researchers not affiliatedwith Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Tech, and while several resulted <strong>in</strong> a quick response, many <strong>in</strong>volvedextensive <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong>to the collections for the researchers. Two noteworthyreference situations were (1) the two-day visit <strong>of</strong> Dr. Reg<strong>in</strong>a Pr<strong>in</strong>z <strong>of</strong> Braunschweig,Germany, <strong>in</strong> March to look at the German and Austrian women architects papers. (2)Earlier this month, Ms. Cordula Mohr (University <strong>of</strong> Hamburg) arrived unexpectedly todelve <strong>in</strong>to the IAWA <strong>in</strong> an attempt to f<strong>in</strong>d a focus for her dissertation topic.IAWA on the InternetThe Archivist enhanced exist<strong>in</strong>g web pages, added new ones, andrecorded use statistics, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g creat<strong>in</strong>g a homepage for newsletter with thetable <strong>of</strong> contents for issues 1-10 (m<strong>in</strong>us 8-9), converted Milka Prize announcementto web access with l<strong>in</strong>ks, added Barnard fem<strong>in</strong>ist art conference to homepage,and supervised the upgrade <strong>of</strong> the biographical list<strong>in</strong>gs to a searchabledatabase.The manuscripts curator ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed biographical <strong>in</strong>formation, and TonyAtk<strong>in</strong>s, programmer for the Digital Library and <strong>Archive</strong>s, turned it <strong>in</strong>to a databasesearchable from any web browser. Students have mapped <strong>in</strong>formation from theold system <strong>in</strong>to the new one, and 101 biographies are now searchable athttp://lumiere.lib.vt.edu/iawa_db/ New biographies <strong>in</strong>clude those for Elizabeth2


Kurian, Sarelle T. Weisberg, and Jean L<strong>in</strong>den Young, with extensive revisions tobiographies for Evelyne Lang Jakob and Silvia Paun. [In the future, anyone couldsubmit biographical <strong>in</strong>formation directly to a preview database, and each newsubmission would be reviewed by a qualified <strong>in</strong>dividual and, if approved, addedto the publicly available, searchable IAWA Biographical Database.]DonationsThe Manuscripts Curator contacted potential donors and acknowledgeddonations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those <strong>of</strong> the Jean L<strong>in</strong>den Young papers, the Kathleen Cruisepapers, a book from Raili Pietila, the Sarelle T. Weisberg papers, books from theOrganization <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> Architects and Eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>of</strong> Japan, and <strong>in</strong>formation aboutwomen <strong>in</strong> architecture from Claire Bonney <strong>of</strong> Switzerland. She and, subsequently, Ms.Carlton, received and recorded donations to the Friends <strong>of</strong> the IAWA, wrote letters <strong>of</strong>thanks for each donation, and forwarded these donations to the IAWASecretary/Treasurer.A curator from Duke University's Center for the Study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> Culturecontacted the IAWA Archivist with an <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> the Louise Hall collection (circa 75 cu. ft.,1891-1990s) I reviewed their prelim<strong>in</strong>ary f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g aid and found that the collection<strong>in</strong>cludes letters, photographs (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g class negatives, cartes de visite, cab<strong>in</strong>et cards,t<strong>in</strong>types), papers from teach<strong>in</strong>g and various jobs <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g architecture projects,draw<strong>in</strong>gs from 1932 architecture class, diaries, and more. Five oversized boxes conta<strong>in</strong>with maps, bluepr<strong>in</strong>ts scrapbooks and orig<strong>in</strong>al artwork. I consulted with local advisors <strong>of</strong>the IAWA Board and emailed advisor Tony Wrenn, before accept<strong>in</strong>g the donation. (Hallwas a long-time member <strong>of</strong> the North Carol<strong>in</strong>a Chapter <strong>of</strong> the AIA, and archivist <strong>of</strong> thatchapter. She taught architecture at Duke from 1931-1975. Mr. Wrenn noted that Hallmentored many architects and scholars, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Dr. Mary Woods who teaches <strong>in</strong> theSchool <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> at Cornell and has just published a history <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ession.Mail<strong>in</strong>gsSmith and Carlton ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed the IAWA address spreadsheet for newslettermail<strong>in</strong>gs. Smith sent out 362 enveloped IAWA Newsletters to non-U.S.A. addresses andapproximately 125 enveloped IAWA Newsletters to U.S.A. addresses that could not go <strong>in</strong>bulk mail<strong>in</strong>g. ($161.75) Both mailed meet<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>utes to the Board <strong>of</strong> Advisors asreceived from the secretary.PublicationsSmith and McMillan ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed a list <strong>of</strong> books available <strong>in</strong> the University Librariesabout women <strong>in</strong> architecture, orig<strong>in</strong>ally for a patron's request but now ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed forfuture reference. (This needs to go on the Internet.)Smith wrote an article for the Fall 1999 IAWA Newsletter about what happens tocollections when they are donated to the IAWA. McMillan wrote article about Smith forthe next issue <strong>of</strong> the IAWA Newsletter.OtherThe Archivist visited the Canadian Center for <strong>Architecture</strong> <strong>in</strong> June 1999while <strong>in</strong> Montreal to deliver a paper on electronic theses and dissertations forthe Association <strong>of</strong> College and Research Libraries’ Rare Books and ManuscriptsSection. I corresponded about shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation upon return to VT, but have3


gotten no response. (Are there really very few Canadian women beyond PhyllisLambert (founded CCA) and Blanche Lemco Van G<strong>in</strong>kle?)The Archivist was contact by Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>Women</strong>’s Network about <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gthe IAWA; I compiled and sent <strong>in</strong>formation requested. I was also contacted byARVHA, French Association <strong>of</strong> Architects, do<strong>in</strong>g a New Opportunities for <strong>Women</strong>(NOW) project, “Fem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>e side <strong>of</strong> architecture: the pr<strong>of</strong>essions <strong>in</strong> rehabilitation.”Forwarded <strong>in</strong>formation to Donna Dunay about Solange possibly represent<strong>in</strong>g theIAWA.Manuscripts Curator handl<strong>in</strong>g IAWA collectionsThe IAWA Archivist is chair<strong>in</strong>g the search committee for the Curator <strong>of</strong>Historical Manuscript Collections and Special Collections Librarian (Ms. KatzSmith’s position). The committee also <strong>in</strong>cludes IAWA Board <strong>of</strong> Advisor MarciaFeuerste<strong>in</strong>. A dozen letters <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest and resumes were reviewed and fourcandidates selected for reference checks. Two have been <strong>in</strong>vited to campus for<strong>in</strong>terviews. All Blacksburg Advisors will be <strong>in</strong>vited to the candidates’ presentations(Tuesday, Sept. 28, and Thursday, Sept. 30, at 9:30 <strong>in</strong> the Newman Library BoardRoom) and an <strong>in</strong>formal reception <strong>in</strong> the Special Collections Read<strong>in</strong>g Room(Monday, Sept. 27, and Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 4:00 p.m.). Recommendationsfor hir<strong>in</strong>g will be made to the Dean <strong>of</strong> Libraries <strong>in</strong> early October.
