The Queensland team to compete atthe ICKFA National Titles in Octoberwas then presented to the crowd withall members <strong>of</strong> the team invited to thefloor to receive their applause.Two more special presentations weremade to their very surprisedrecipients. Sheryl Higgins has beenthe treasurer for the ICKFA for the last2 years and has been a driving factorbehind establishing the pr<strong>of</strong>essionalpractises now used by theassociation. Through Sheryl’s hardwork and diligence the association isnow positioned so that it can continueto move forward in a pr<strong>of</strong>essionalfinancial manner. Due to othercommitments Sheryl has had toresign as treasurer. As a thank you aspecial presentation and <strong>of</strong>ficial thankyou was given to Sheryl by SenseiMartin Phillips, President <strong>of</strong> theICKFA.The second special presentation wasto Sensei Martin Phillips. SenseiMartin is shortly going to Japan tochallenge for his Shihan teachersrank. As a show <strong>of</strong> support and thankyou to Sensei Martin for all he has<strong>do</strong>ne for QLD <strong>Chito</strong>-<strong>Ryu</strong> <strong>Karate</strong>, themembers <strong>of</strong> both the Sunshine Coastand Gold Coast <strong>do</strong>jos bandedtogether to raise over $1000 to helpSensei Martin get to Japan for hisgrading. With the possibility <strong>of</strong> ourown Shihan in Queensland this wasseen as a great investment by theQLD <strong>Chito</strong>-<strong>Ryu</strong> members.The final demonstration <strong>of</strong> the daywas the kids 5-7 yrs demonstrationKumite. The relaxing <strong>of</strong> the rulesallowed for a lot closer interactionfrom the coaches as these futurestars went about showing everyonewhat they could <strong>do</strong>. Aaron Pregun,Dylan Pike, Alexander Priala andNathan Scavone all put on a fantasticdisplay <strong>of</strong> their skills and etiquettewith all leaving the ring with a hugesmile to accompany their participant’strophy.The afternoon’s events kicked <strong>of</strong> withthe 7-9 years Kumite. All matcheswere a good test <strong>of</strong> skill and spirit withsome <strong>of</strong> the newer competitors havingto contend with the extra speed andpower that the excitement <strong>of</strong> acompetition brings. In what was ahard fought division Luke Mouldenfrom the Sunshine Coast out pointedDean Marincevski from Kogarah Bayto take the 1 st place trophy.Senior Demonstration – Sensei Martin Phillips throwing Rhys WoodhouseThe 10-11 years divisions for bothgirls and boys were very strongMontana Stewart travelled all the wayfrom Kogarah Bay in Sydney to takeout the girls division, with JamesO’Grady from the Sunshine Coasttaking out the boys division over <strong>do</strong>joteam mate Viet Kass.The tough battles continued throughthe remaining junior divisions whereboth the Sunshine Coast and GoldCoast <strong>do</strong>jos well represented. Thehighlight event for the juniors was the16-17 years boys Kumite were LinhTran stepped up a division to take outthe 1 st place. The speed and skill <strong>of</strong> allboys in this division delighted thecrowd.The adults divisions demonstrated agreat mix <strong>of</strong> experience andbeginners with some <strong>of</strong> thecompetitors competing for the firsttime. The women’s division washighlighted by the performance <strong>of</strong>Sensei Sandra Phillips who has onlyrecently returned to competition.Sensei Sandra’s demonstration <strong>of</strong>hard, fast and controlled Kumiteprovided everyone with a greatexample <strong>of</strong> where they needed to taketheir training. In the men’s divisionDuncan Bigg from the SunshineCoast showed the benefits <strong>of</strong> hisfocused training to takeout the eventnarrowly beating out Anthony Horganfrom the Gold Coast. The match wasvery close with Anthony jumping to anearly lead only to have Duncan comeback at him late in the match. Anthonywill learn from the experience, withboth competitors continuing to buildtowards the national titles.The trophy presentations rounded outthe end <strong>of</strong> the day with big rounds <strong>of</strong>applause given by all. The Juniortournament champion was presentedto Linh Tran from the Sunshine Coastwho came second in his kata divisionand won the Kumite after stepping upa division. Senior TournamentChampion was awarded to SenseiSandra Phillips who won both theBlack Belt Kata and Open Women’sKumite division with very strongshowings.A huge thank you to all competitorswho performed with a high level <strong>of</strong>skills, etiquette and bu<strong>do</strong> spirit,making for a great day <strong>of</strong> action.Thank you to the <strong>of</strong>ficials andreferee’s who were rarely noticedduring the day (the sign <strong>of</strong> a greatjob!). And last but not least a hugethank you to all the volunteers whoseefforts make an event like thispossible.The 1 st Annual Gold Coast Cup was aterrific event and we all look forwardto 2009 when Gold Coast <strong>Chito</strong>-<strong>Ryu</strong><strong>Karate</strong> will welcome everyone backfor the 2 nd Annual Gold Coast Cup.River <strong>of</strong> Knowledge – Spring <strong>2008</strong> 17
