Rogers’ mother, Eva Black, stepfather Vic Czerniak and brother Justin Loth became emotional during theceremony in which the trees with purple flowers were planted by friends Mary Watts and Jared Jauer. Students released purple balloonswhile Beyoncé’s “Halo” played through the loudspeakers. School Secretary Karan Huggins said arrangements will be made for differentclasses to take care of the trees.WISE COUNTY‘Spirit’ campaigns report increased numbersBy JULIE NEALSeveral <strong>Wise</strong> <strong>County</strong> families will be able tocelebrate Christmas this year with the help ofthe Spirit of Christmas.Seven cities or areas participated in the holidaycharity, and four of them are reporting thehighest number in three years of families askingfor help.Fifty-four families put in applications to theChico Spirit of Christmas, with an average offour kids per family. Some people have complained that the kids are asking for biggeritems, such as iPods and televisions, but Southwick dismissed the criticism.“They’re kids,” she said. “They want everything their friends have.”The Decatur Spirit of Christmas is up 14 angels from last year, and sponsorKristen Huddleston said she thinks it is because people have not recoveredfrom the recession.“People didn’t ask for help last year because they thought they could overcomeit,” she said. “Now they are realizing they need help.”South <strong>Wise</strong> Spirit of Christmas, formerlyRhome Spirit of Christmas, has 29 familieswith 68 kids among their angels.
